I suppose it's Fenty's fault that we're too far away from Manchester?

Oh, sorry? did I mention JSF at all in my statement?..no, I didn't think so either!!  .
I'm talking about the club as a whole, the infrastructure, location, investment, just about all aspects of our club are up the spout!!..
Davis stating he wants to be closer to Manchester, which in reality is all of an hour halves drive away, is quite frankly a p!ss poor excuse, footballers need to be where they will play and be paiid and when they sign on the dotted line they know exactly the location of that club...

He signed a year deal last summer - he has given it a go and decided to head back to where he feels more comfortable

The problem is loyalty - if only we had a team of Jimmy Mac's, feel like we've got lucky with him - nobody else wants to stick around

Life’s not black and white though is it Northbank. Nor is it static and we don’t know if anything has changed in Davis’ life.

It’s potentially worrying though that our hopes of not needing a major influx of new players is looking less likely.

Our fans are shocking some times.

By the way, we extended his contract, so he won't be free of charge

He didn't seem a bad player, but are we really that bothered?

He was part of a side that finished 17th in Division 4.

I'd have probably kept him as part of a pool of centre-backs in the new squad but I'm not going to cry about losing him and we can certainly do better if we want to progress.

I thought Davis was ok and steady enough but Ohman better and we need a footballing centre half alongside him who can pass the ball out. On that basis Davis would have been second choice and he probably knows that?

I agree, at times our defence was pretty poor so hopefully we can improve it.

He was ok. But I agree with this. I wish them all the best, but we're hardly breaking up a title winning squad here are we? Defence stats were awful last year and the facts speak for themselves.

It's true for footballers, life has to be balanced. But.. if there was enough justication for a footballer to believe in GTFC on and off the pitch there would be a little more weight on our side of the scales before they made any decisions about their future. There was a time when location was never mentioned as a problem and using it as a perennial excuse is like trying to use a tiny fig leaf to cover an unadulterated mess. Footballers aren't stupid, they see and feel the same problems as the fans, and being right in the thick of it, probably more so. RHJ and Whitmore clear off for more game time elsewhere because the manager played Collins over them rather than letting them feel like they're wanted and Davis looks like he's on his way because he feels project GTFC isn't enough for him to weigh off against personal preferences. All we need now is Macca to sign for Scunny to start from scratch again.

Didn't say anything earlier.. but how the hell does a football club launch (and I use this word very loosely) its season tickets without a 10 month payment plan? Could they not foresee an outcry or problems with take up? And then reactionary as always magically get together one two weeks later. It's only one off the pitch point to make but the club is riddled with this attitude throughout and no wonder players can't wait to leave us. At this point in time, I can't find a single bit of evidence to argue with the bookies making us strong favourites for relegation. Be as loyal as you want and disagree, but it's time fans opened up their eyes fully to all of the consequences of how our club is run. The problems are maybe not all connected, but add up to a very poor image, and result in players like Davis wanting to leave. He wouldn't even think twice of leaving the Gimps down the road if they'd have lost out in the play-offs this season..

Absolutely right KM the football world is fluid, but when players are deciding their future lies elsewhere away from Grimsby, without, as far as we know, another job to walk into I'd be asking why?..
As a contractor myself I go where the work is, knowing I'll be away from home and away from my family but I'd not just walk away without a job to go to ..
And, for as much as people may say we need better, our best defensive performances this year have been with RHJ, Whitmore and Davis in the back line...all of who have now walked away....not been let go by the club but walked on their own accord...there has to be a reason why...and it makes me wonder how many others would have walked be it not for the fact they are contracted to the club for a minimum of another 12 months...

I reckon it’s a good thing that all these players are going. With any luck we’ll find better who weren’t happy to get the sun loungers out by mid feb .

I’ve got a feeling these players who are choosing to leave probably know they’re going to get a lot less game time next season and are finding new clubs . Probably in the conference as I can’t see clubs queuing up to sign the likes of them .

I also think it also depends on the nature of the "extension" we have on the contract as well. If we triggered Davies extension then maybe this was because we knew of interest in him (from the North West).

If we have triggered this we should at least get a fee now if he does leave, assuming a fee would not put off potential suitors. I am a little bit surprised we did not do this with Whitmore as well. As at worst he would have been a decent back up player at best we could have got a small fee for him.

I think the idea is to hang onto our competent performers like the three defenders who have left or about to leave and try and add some above average players to improve the team. It would be nice to keep players more than one season to create partnerships and continuation increases the chance of players gelling by knowing each other's games inside out. I actually thought that Davis and Whitmore made an above average partnership for this division on the few times MJ put them together.

Now we're at the point of trying to find some "bang average" players and hope that they're as competent as the three that have left before even trying to find improvements. Remember we've got less than a "bang average" budget. Personally I'm disappointed that we've lost all three (if the reports are true about Davis, maybe he's putting a little come and get me advert out there), because apart from the left hand side, our defence seemed like it was the last area of our team that needed overhauling now Collins has gone..

I guess you can look at this two ways.

I’d rather have someone that wants to play every game than someone prepared to toss it off in the reserves and still get paid.
The fact that there wasn’t a song and dance about it at the time says to me it was all done correctly !!

It seemed common knowledge that a lot of the more experienced players did not like Bignot. Macca was probably one of them. It's one thing loving a club, but if you're not playing and you're not getting on with the manager, then it's probably time to leave..

It will come as no surprise when I say I agree with all of that.

Even players we have recruited from part time non league, to give them their "big" break can't get away fast enough, perhaps coming to the conclusion whence they came is more professional than this.

It is a mess, but like all companies it mirrors the man at the top, and the culture and tone they set for the company.

The trouble is, a footballer at this level doesn't earn shed loads - so they can't entirely relocate to the area.

It'd be different if the club was in League 1, or even the Championship, where TV and sponsorship money is naturally much higher. We could afford to give players 3-year contracts of a few grand every week, which makes buying a house and relocating their families much, much easier.

Suddenly, location isn't such an issue any more.

There would still be footballers who'd turn down the extra cash to continue living and working in the bigger cities, but the bigger salaries would certainly help with relocating.

As it is, in the position we're in, players get year-by-year deals, on not a huge amount (in football terms) and it's never enough to convince them to relocate and bring their families along. If you're living away from your girlfriend, wife, kids, mates, then it's no wonder you get the stories that have been mentioned in that Linwood podcast.

That's why it's more important than ever that we recruit not just good footballers but good people too.

Not just Salford in Manchester area. Could be of interest to Oldham. Macclesfield, Crewe, Port Vale & Bradford are also within easy travelling distance of Manchester, although you could probably take Macc out of the equation given their record for late payment of wages and Crewe for obvious reasons.

You'd have to assume he's got something lined up if he is leaving.

I think there is potential there as he had some good spells last season as well as a good goal return for a central defender. Nothing spectacular, though. Plenty of other similarly half-decent central defenders around I expect. Who knows, perhaps we'll be lucky and sign a good one in his place?  :)

He conceded 1 penalty this season. away at Cheltenham. How exactly does that make him "prone to giving away penalties"? We conceded 5 penalties this season, Were Hall-Johnson, Dixon, Collins & McKeown also prone to giving away penalties too?

I have noticed that people on here are very quick to talk down our players when there is even a hint that they may go somewhere else. "Well he was never that good, we'll get better" etc. etc. Except that we often end up with a player who is not as good as the one we persuaded ourselves would be no big loss.
In my opinion, Harry Davis is the sort of player we need to be keeping. He is versatile, solid, and reliable and always works hard for the team. As a league two team the likelihood of just plucking a better player than Davis out of the air for nothing  is not great, in my opinion.

can you give some examples please Tony, because when i see the team that started Jolley's first game and compare it to the team 12 months on i could only find 1 possible area where we had gone backwards?

this was his first line up (3-5-2)
McKeown, Collins and Clifton were all regulars this season. Ben davies, clarke and suliman  not as good as hendrie, davies and rhj. Fox and ring, probably fox but probably fair to say that the jury's out. Berrett and Rose not as good as Hess and Embleton. Matt & Dembele up front. Difficult to say on this one as Matt didn't pull up any trees but has gone on to much better things; as has Dembele , although by this stage Dembele wasn't interested and was completely ineffectual. Whatever you say about Thomas he scored goals, generally worked hard and had  a bit of class. Dennis, Cardwell and Cook have all been as ineffectual as Matt was on so many occasions

I agree that the team now is stronger than the team was when Jolley took over. My point was not about that. I just see that there are some regular posters on this site who immediately talk negatively about any player's abilities when there is a hint they may want a move. Davis is a good example, but I also saw it recently with comments about Thomas, Rose, RHJ, Matt certainly last year, and going back plenty more. I'm even seeing it currently with negative comments about James McKeown.
No player is perfect. They all make mistakes from time to time, but so do top level players and we are a League Two club paying, I suspect, less than even a number of other League Two clubs. It's the assumption that we will find better players if we just get rid of the ones we have now that I find a bit unrealistic. If the playing budget were to improve significantly, then that may be a whole different story, but often all that happens is that a different player of similar abilities comes in for a year or so until it's his turn to move on at which point posters will talk him down and the process starts again.

Davis playing at centre back was one of the main reasons we ended our long losing streaks at the beginning of the season, and had a good spell throughout the middle of the season. After that he got injured and there was a lot of formation changes and chopping and changing. But when he was in a settled side he proved to be a very good centre back and one of our better players. I for one would be disappointed to see him go.

as someone else has mentioned, he and Hendrie are very good pals and i thought the two of them looked very happy and settled especially in the recent GTTV thing....very suprised if he wants to be off.

Davis is a good League Two defender and will be missed if he departs. Defence wasn't our problem this season. Scoring goals was the problem. Bury finished 2nd and conceded more goals than us.

I agree, I think other posters are being harsh or there is a bit of sour grapes going on. It would be a shame if he left I think.

I don't understand people saying our defence was good this season, it was average at best, yes I know we conceded less than Newport and Bury, but how much was down to Mckeown, I saw a stat in March April time which indicated Mckeown had made the most saves in the football league by about 30, Mckeown also won player of the year, a keeper doesn't win player of the year because the defence in front of him is solid and he doesn't need to make more saves than anybody else because the defence is solid in front of him, Improvements was needed in defence, midfield and up front.

It could be argued though that the defenders had to win a lot more headers because Mckeown doesn't deal very well with crosses into the box.

The problem is 3 at the back. If we played Hendrie, Davis, Ohman and  Ring we would have a lot more solidity. Pacey CB are a premium here and 3 at the back always needs at least one quick CB

Aye. No good playing 3 at the back if you cannot afford better players to play that system. We started with it against FGR on the opening day of last season and a whole season later and 9 months on the training ground we still havent got it right.

You have to be pragmatic at our level/resources.

shithouses like Davis and the like, are quite happy to come when they have nothing else on offer.

If you don't want to be at a club, then dont come. Davis can intercourse off, and intercourse off now.

Of course, you would never have taken a job where you didn’t want to be even if you didn’t have another one to go to.

Pretty sure the club triggered the one year option in his contract so if any other club wanted him they would have to approach with an offer for him.

Correct, I like Davis one our best defenders, so it's definitely not in our best interest to let him go on a free.  I'm sure the club wouldn't step in his way if he wanted to move on, so he either gets his head down and then wait until the end of his contract or he puts in a transfer request, which means a fee will be needed.  Now for me if I wanted to make it difficult for clubs to prize him away sometimes you have put a slightly higher price tag on his head, like £250k.
