When players are considering a transfer or loan period, I wonder if they research fans forums and message boards to get a feel of the current atmosphere and feel for the club?

“Grimsby want me, let’s have a little look at what their fans are saying about the place right now”

That is a good question, i would at least think they would do some checking,,

I’d guess that in the world of pro football most players in other clubs would know or know someone who knew someone who was at a the club they were thinking of joining and be able to get the lowdown . Unfortunately.

Yes they probably do.

I also hope they would have heard of the terrific away following we have infact probably one of the best in league football and also the way we donated our own money for Paul Hurst, the thousands we took to Wembley in non league football and the backing our players do get when they give our there best for 90 minutes.

It's just a shame that right here right now we have a manager way way past his sell by date , no doubt we have a bigger problem too but let's leave that for now .

Let's just hope they don't look up the management/boards method of 'interacting' with the fans and local media on Youtube.
Just watch that video, all you potential signings and investors, laying bare all of the inadequacies and general weirdness of the current board and management.

The Town fans when they are behind the team are as good as any and in the lower leagues quite exceptional. However because they are so passionate when it goes the other way you get what you see now. The problem here is GTFC have no feckin idea how to harness or galvanise the support but they find countless ways to infuriate, demonise and ultimately lose it!

Players normally only care about wages and location , are they enough and is it feasible to move x amount of miles away

I'd imagine if they looked up the fan forum on youtube that would tell them all they want to know about the club. Unfortunately.

They probably do, which makes you wonder what sort of impression they get when there’s a 97-page thread PINNED to the top of the “other board” where fans can chuck about phrases like “mongo wogchops” on page 1?

Of course, when a player claimed he’d been subjected to similar language away at Halifax one year, he was “making it all up”.

They probably do research a potential new club but how much do they put into it will give an indication of the likelihood that they will sign.

If they are researching for hours, they will undoubtedly learn about the away following, crowdfunder etc.

Unfortunately this month, they will get to the team manager column and close the computer.

Or they might just fancy a change and join a club thats on the verge of some significant changes,  which could give them a regular playing spot and an interesting remainder of the season

Perhaps it's just as well they find out in advance what a totally flipping shambles GTFC is rather than being taken in by the baldy one's bullshit and the smarmy face of Fenty. It would certainly help to avoid any more Osbourne's et al

I reckon players are most likely to ring up their fellow players who've been at the club and ask them what to expect, and would they recommend it. Also maybe ask what a player thinks of the manager too.

Same as any job I guess

I'd not noticed that before. It's bizarre that it exists on this forum, it's not just players, what impression does it give to our fans who are not white, straight and men?

I remember the game and Toto was clearly incensed by something. It was sad to see people shrug it aside and phrases like 'playing the race card' make me shudder.

Yes, and any player worth their salt wouldn't sign for a manager who seems like a dead man walking and leave then exposed to whether a potential new manager rates them. In the back of their minds, they may also wonder where they'd be playing their football in a few months if Slade stayed.. Chester? Solihull? Barrow? Or back to the club they had recently left.

At the end of the day, it's the board's ultimate responsibility to change fan opinion. By now they know what the fans require for them to return. It's up to the board if they want to change the manager or make radical changes in the boardroom. Message board content is driven by the actions of a select few at the top and what happens on the pitch. Of course at GTFC we are constantly being told it's the other way around and the fans are culpable for everything that is wrong at the football club..

The player could easily have a look online and learn from recent events that GTFC are a bit of a shambles, then look on The Fishy, CA, Twitter etc and deduce, no wonder the fans are peed off..

I mentioned this to GrimRob over a year ago, who felt the need to discuss it with the moderators, and they collectively found nothing wrong with it. Which is why I’ve not really posted since then.

GrimRob is happy to censor anyone on here at the request of Fenty and hand out your personal details, but there’s nothing wrong with any of that. Says it all.

Yep, it's the fans fault players aren't signing just like it's the fans fault we are in the position we are in. Nothing to do with the manager or board at all.

I doubt players check fans forums at all when considering a move.

That incident almost derailed the whole season. It was clear something happened. A player wouldn't make that up, why would he? The squad were clearly affected by it too but the club swept it under the carpet after initially saying it would be reported to the police (it wasn't).

The club doesnt have a good record on race, does it?

Why did he not go to the Police himself then?  As to why would he make it up? because he gave the w@nker sign to fans as he trudged off at half time and somehow needed to justify it.  I am fully aware (unfortunately) that we have plenty of retards capable of racial abuse, even to our own players.  However, I was there that day and if he actually heard something directed at him from as far away as he was with all that noise I would be absolutely amazed.  The squad where probably affected by the wave of abuse from our own fans that day, no doubt about that.  It was appalling to say the least.  But I'm sorry, I genuinely think that Toto was using the race card as a cop out.

retarded
Retarded is a word to describe someone who is mentally slow. This is a medical word that spread to slang, and is today considered very insulting.

I used the word 'retards' to describe people who are capable of being racially abusive, so much so that they would even racially abuse our own players (not worse than racially abusing anyone by the way).  If you are upset by me insulting such people they I suggest you are the one with a problem.  There is NEVER an excuse for racism and if I insult somebody because they are then so be it.  You are of course entitled to your own opinions, but thankfully most of us have moved on from the 60's

The other way of thinking about it, is that it is a lot of hassle to raise issues of racial abuse and people are often stigmatised for it. Often when things like this are reported they are not taken seriously and we get into victim blaming. Like in this case were people are saying he's played the 'race card'.
He's done as much as reporting it to his manager and maybe felt that was enough.
I was there that day and he was totally incensed, I saw his reaction straight away. It is clear something was said to him when he was about 6 feet from the Town fans. Like you say, you know what a minority are like and it only takes one person to say something ridiculous.

Could easily work in the opposite way.....wow....their fans are completely p1ssed off with everything right now.....good chance for me to go and shine......put in a half decent performance and i will be a club legend overnight....where do i sign ???

I think the onus is on the employer to take action in those scenarios Civvy. The man was allegedly racially abused in the course of his work and the employer has a duty of care.

Toto could have reported it to the police himself. But there are other issues connected with that (e.g. lack of confidence in the police themselves, likelihood of a prosecution). Though I note Headingly's point that that can often rebound on the complainant - but Toto did raise the issue publicly already, so he can't have been worried about fall-out from it. On the other hand, if the man's employer takes no action, what chance is there the police would treat it as credible?

From Toto's point of view, you can understand him thinking, 'if the club won't do anything about it and support me, what chance have I got (a black guy from Liverpool)' and just getting on with it until the end of the season then leaving at the first opportunity.

On the other hand did anyone come forward and state that they heard what was said (even if they did so anonymously for fear of retribution)?

I don't think you could claim that this incident nearly derailed our season. The record AFTER this game was WWWWWD. Before (heading back in time) it was: DWWLWW.

That’s the point HM. It’s a very tricky subject. If indeed it was the club that decided not to take it further then that is disgusting and no wonder he couldn’t wait to leave.  My whole point is that just because my personal opinion is that it didn’t happen it doesn’t mean it didn’t.  The subject was done to death at the time and shouldn’t be hijacking threads. If getting grief for reporting racism, still exists to point of dissuading someone from doing so, we are in a sorry sorry state. But just because it’s an emotive issue doesn’t mean someone is guilty until proven innocent. (Ska face take note).

Anyone see shrews v Bradford a few weeks back ? Toto had to be dragged away from the yorkie fans by his teammates at full time . Obviously got a bit of a temper . Henderson was bouncing around waving his arms windmill stylee which was a bit embarrassing too .

And at what point did I say that racists shouldn’t be insulted? Use a another word instead of ‘imbecile’ - it’s offensive and degrading, similar to the word ‘divvy’ (still visible on the other forum btw).

Why should I use another word. In this particular context I believe it is appropriate. Surely these people have under developed brains. Otherwise they would understand that the colour of a persons skin is totally irrelevant as to the kind of person they are. I can assure you I have never used the word divvy on this or any other forum. So I don’t know where you got that cr@p from.

Most players will look on the fishy.

It may be unpleasant viewing at times when the going gets tough but a lot of the fans are a reasonable lot. Appreciate a trier and that should be comfort to most players.

Its not just racism. People see inadequacies or weakness in someone and there likely to have a go.Eg knocking others about  their physical appearance  eg calling them ugly is just as bad and hurtful as racism. Unfortunately we live in a society thats profit driven and morality sadly sometimes goes out of the window in pursuit of greed

I don't think profit drives that sort of behaviour. If anything capitalism sponsors diversity because it sees it as being more profitable to employ a more diverse workforce.

That's not to say unfettered capitalism doesn't drive other harmful behaviours.
