I hope not ! Nobody forced him to go and he could have still been with us if he ha accepted that contract extension. I don't particularly want ex players or managers back if they left on the own accord because the " grass looked greener somewhere else ". Certainly if it isn't a move that really furthers their career.

Done nothing much elsewhere he has been.

Will end up in non league on a decent contract.

Wouldn't be against him coming back, though I'm pretty much take it or leave it. One thing that's clear is that Slade is building a team with pace, looking at the forward signings, and I wonder if he's looking at a poacher/finisher to buzz around in the box. Midfield looks full of goals too though, so maybe he's looking for the new 'Lump' to lead the line.

Would be happy to see him back, but wouldn't care if he didn't.

I'd imagine it's highly unlikely....We'd have to pay a fee for him and it's well documented how much Slade likes the wheeling and dealing of a free transfer. A bigger non-league club who are desperate for promotion and willing to spend for it would be a safer bet i imagine, ie Tranmere.

Need to do better for me. Jones looks like a proper player to me. A fit Asante could be a frightening prospect for defences in this league as he looked pretty good when he could only use his right foot to stand on, literally, especially at Accrington. If we sign Walker, who is by all accounts a real talent with some pace and skill plus the clever hold up play of Vernon we'll have a well balanced and dangerous strike force In my opinion.

He's been made noises on Twitter on and off for a while now about how impressive the Cowleys are. The fact he has put in a transfer request would suggest he's been tapped up or his agent has touted him.

I think he was great for us and he's a top lad but I reckon we should be aiming a bit higher.

Amond would score a hatful of goals in a good side that creates plenty of chances because he is a quality finisher...he will score plenty for a top 7 side...hope we can attract a higher calibre of player tbh

Don't think we have had a better goal scorer in the last 10 years. He shouldn't have been allowed to go and managed a decent return in a relegated side. easily capable of 20+ in a decent side.

Looking at his match stats for us and then Hartlepool last season, I think he's a bit of a flat track bully.

Most of his goals came against bottom half teams each season and he did almost nothing against those in the play-off/promotion spots.

Whether or not this would be different if he was in a better team, I'm not sure, but I don't think he would fit in with Slade's likely style of play in any case. If he was to go to Lincoln, I suppose he might do OK playing off scraps from that lump Rhead.

Alan Connell was a better all round striker for the season we had him here, and his goals were against any type pf opposition, not just the top teams.

Amond had a good season when top scorer, but compare him to Omar who went on to produce the club a 7 figure transfer fee, and there is no real comparison - if Omar had finished the full season, how many goals would he have had as a total ??

See for me I thought hearn was an improvement on connell, he played some of his best stuff before he managed to even score in that first 10 games, more than just a striker, he must wonder what could have been if it wasn't for injuries

Don't get me wrong connell scored loads of cracking goals, just thought hearn had that extra quality that couldve seen him play alot higher even if goals were harder to come by

Hearn for me is the best striker we've had recently.  He had everything and defenders just couldn't get near him.

If injuries hadn't occurred I think he'd have made us more money than Bogle - anyone remember the Chelsea link? Ha!
Posted by: Mariner_09, June 28, 2017, 2:20pm; Reply: 45
Hearn was the most complete striker I've ever seem play for us. He was strong for his size, he had enough pace to take him away from a defender, was able to create his own chances and was the only player I've ever had genuine confidence in when he was baring down 1 on 1 with the keeper. He scored loads of goals against all kinds of opposition until sides worked out that he was our only danger, as like Connell he played in a terrible team. If he'd kept himself fit he'd have been that striker to score loads of goals to get us promoted in the Newport play off season.
Posted by: Maringer, June 28, 2017, 2:53pm; Reply: 46
As always in these threads, I disagree about Hearn having much in the way of pace. He had great ball control, good close skill, good movement, a powerful shot and was a decent finisher, but you never saw him running away from anybody except, perhaps, the very slowest of defenders.

Along with his injuries, this relative lack of pace is what led to him playing for us because otherwise he'd have been playing at League One level or thereabouts.
Posted by: Mighty_Mariner, June 28, 2017, 3:06pm; Reply: 47
I always thought Liam had bags of pace - just shows how we all see things differently.
Posted by: Maringer, June 28, 2017, 3:20pm; Reply: 48
I think he was pretty good at timing his run so (with the right ball) it often appeared he had got a couple of yards ahead of the defender off a standing start.

He was by no means slow, but you never saw him run past defenders. Just a pity for us that he was always crocked after that first season, though I seem to recall that it was later revealed that he was angling for a move away before that?
Posted by: Mighty_Mariner, June 28, 2017, 4:24pm; Reply: 49
That was the most dissapointing this for me with regards to Liam - he sid all the right things in terms of his love for the club and fans and wanting to repay the faith we'd showing during his injuries but was holidaying with the Mansfield squad and angling for a move there  at the same time.

I'd have Amond back in a flash.30 goals in 37 starts with us and umpteen assists to Bogle. 14 goals at H,pool and nearly as many assists. This does not signify a selfish player but one with a definite knack for scoring or making it for a team mate. Reasons for leaving ,if the truth be known , was probably the usual penny pinching offer (a definite trait at this club) and his agent was in no mood to haggle as an alternative offer was on the table.I seem to recollect that we lost a certain full back due to similar circumstances recently. I note that Bogle hasn't exactly torn trees up yet at a higher division. Put Amond with Vernon -who has yet to find a real partner up front- and we could have the answer to our current problems up front.

Podge was offered an 18 month extension in the middle of the season he played for us which at the time went against the policy of only discussing deals in the closed season. He chose not to sign as he wanted to wait and see if we got up or not, players can't have it both ways.

My thoughts exactly Podge had the chance to be here for longer but he chose to wait just in case we did not go up.

He made a bad decision imo and he will have to live with it.

I do agree he could score 20 goals in a good team but a good team will probably not need him.

It does not matter what we think of him its up to the managers that are looking for a striker,

Most of them might think he could do it in non league but will not be prepared to pay money to get him in the league.

Nobody knows the terms of that extension offer- it could quite easily have been derisory knowing certain penny pinching tendencies. Just look at how the club (Hurst) decimated the team at the end of a promotion season, some loyalty there!!. Goals win games and proven goal scorers are at a premium so if the chance does come along to re-sign Amond then any petty grudges need to be put aside, after all the same applies to Slade.

Regarding Hearn, he was at his goal scoring best when he had Elding as a partner ,another player that left because of the way the club (Hurst) handled his situation badly.

Bogle left mid season despite Bignot stating he would stay - some loyalty.

Supporters tend to hold certain players with reverence but as a footballing career is short all players tend to go for the best they can get at the time as they are no different to the rest of us with a family and mortgage to support. Loyalty does little to pay the bills unfortunately.

From Bignot or Bogle? Unfortunately, loyalty wouldn't really come into it where Omar was concerned. Football's a short career and he'll probably be on about 3 times the money he was on here. You could hardly turn that down, or stand in the players way to play at a higher level could you.
Posted by: grimsby pete, June 29, 2017, 10:30am; Reply: 64
The only loyalty in football is with the hard core fans,

Players,  like others have said need to make as much money as they can in a short career ,

Fair weather fans come and go like some club officials,

We have a non chairman that is a hard core fan and we have about 4,000 hard core supporters,

Anybody else are either with us for the fame or the money,

BUT

As long as the players give 100% while they are here with us that is all we can ask,

Podge gave that and I was thankful for it, sometimes players and clubs make bad decisions,

I think both Podge would admit he made one and the club has made many over the years,

BUT

No one is perfect.

Amond? Really? He only scored 14 goals for Hartlepool. To put that in context Sam Jones scored 7 in 16 for us after he signed.

Slade has been open in that he wants to add some pace & physicality into his striker options. Neither of those are strengths of Amond.

People need to stop living in the past. We had the Amond love in last summer when Hurst obviously wasn't fussed to lose him. And Hurst was proved right.

I always think that goalscoring stats can be slightly misleading. Amond played pretty much every minute and scored 14 goals which wasn't bad for him, but obviously not good enough for his team. Alessandra (who I seem to remember looked quite useful at BP?) played almost every minute and scored 9 goals. 23 goals in total from your main strike partnership isn't really good enough, especially if the midfield aren't chipping in with enough goals as Hartlepool's relegation showed. Admittedly, their dismal defence was probably more of an issue but I still think if Amond doesn't score, he doesn't really do anything else.

Put it this way. If we signed him, I'd be OK with it but it wouldn't get my pulse racing and I'd be surprised if he was the sort of player that Slade is after.

I think Hurst wanted him to stay why else would he go against his golden rule and offer the player an extension mid season? If you recall it appeared that Podge "left it to his agent" always dangerous for a club that as the managers has the relationship with the player and not the agent and does not have as much to play on during any negotiation.

Podge is a perfect illustration of a lower league player in modern football in that he will move for what his agent tells him is a better deal even if it's not a better club/side, Why? Because his agent is an agent and their job is to earn their commission and the best way to do that is to get players to hop around.

No, it's in combination with my earlier comments. I think he's a flat track bully - only scores his goals against the weaker teams in a division and doesn't do anything at all against the stronger teams. If you have somebody who scores a certain number of goals but without enough support for the rest of the team, the goals don't tell the whole story. When he was playing for us in the Conference, he didn't score against the top teams and his record was pretty much the same with Hartlepool last season. Wouldn't be surprised if it was the same when he was with Morecambe. I'd check Soccerbase for this but it seems their database has crapped out over the past couple of days.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think he's a bad player at all and he has good movement and finishing, but I can see why Morecambe didn't play him through the middle. Might be a difference case if he was playing in a team with a dominant midfield, but it tends to be the top teams who have the best midfield and I'd doubt any of the biggest teams in the division would sign him.

He'd probably do a good job for the likes of Tranmere in the Conference, assuming they will be one of the strongest teams again next season. Will probably find himself back at a mid-table League Two team.

When he was playing for us in the Conference, he didn't score against the top teams and his record was pretty much the same with Hartlepool last season. .

Nothing to do with the rest of the team creating him chances against the tougher opposition then ? All his fault ?

Amond is a goal scorer, an opportunist, and that type of player needs support and assistance. He has good movement in and around the box as he showed against us last season, he virtually did fck all throughout 90 mins but scored 2 goals.
He was playing in a p1ss poor team who got relegated, no wonder he couldnt score against any of the top sides as his team were outclassed.
When he played for us against the top teams Hurst was more concerned with not losing so again attacking options were limited, wingers behind the ball, centre midfielders on the wing etc.

The lad can finish no doubt but he isnt the type of striker that can do it alone. Would that fit with Slades vision ? I am not sure it would TBH.

But when he played for us in a comparatively good side, he still only scored one goal in the normal season against the rest of the top 5 and that was a penalty against Dover!

If you can point out where I said it was all his fault, then please do so. In fact, I even said he'd probably do quite well in front of a dominant midfield.

However, the fact remains that over the past couple of seasons he scored goals against weaker teams but not the stronger ones and I'd guess that this is why none of the bigger League Two clubs will be interested in signing him.

As a comparison, Bogle (who obviously has more potential, hence the big transfer fee and move up two divisions) scored 7 goals in his games against the top 7 teams last season.

You expect strikers to score more goals against the weaker teams, but the better ones can also score some against the stronger teams as well.

He strikes me as a player who makes the most of being unmarked by lesser defenders, while a top class striker can make himself unmarked even against good defenders.

So, he stepped up a division and was surrounded by midfielders who couldn't score and defenders who couldn't defend and was able to score 14 goals against teams one division higher than with us. Flipping work-shy wage scrounger.

FFS he will be marked (unmarked) by 'lesser defenders' - this is division 4 and not a lot different to the Conference. If he was a top class striker he wouldn't be playing in Div 4. He'd be great for us though. If he 'only' scored against the 17 or 18 weaker clubs and got the odd penalty against the top 5 or 6 I'd be delighted. Also one hopes our midfield is going to be a damn sight better than Hartlepool's or we are in the sh!t

How on Earth did Hartlepools beat us 3-0 last year and he score 2 goals and they got relegated. It's been said he can only score against crap teams ???? I'd have him back straight away. We have enough forwards that can feed the ball but nobody like him-he is very similar to that snidey little git Dennis without having a bad streak in him.It would make my day if we signed him on a 2 year contract if Hartlepools will let him go.

I think that Slade is looking at players that can get us up and stay there, as opposed to players that are good in the 2nd. division, but couldn't make the step up.

Podge's limit is the 2nd. hence Slade won't be interested.

TBF Amond  is a ready made striker as apposed to Dyson who is still developing and would come with add ons

I do not think Slade wants either of them Garth.

He still has not given up on Maynard yet.

Don't try and put words into my mouth.

I never criticised Amond's workrate or application, I just question his ability to be the main striker in a League Two team which is aiming for promotion. My opinion but I'm amazed that some people are getting so pissy about this.

If you want to ignore the fact that he has failed to score goals or do anything much against the better teams in the division in which he has played over the past two seasons, then that's fine. No doubt that a promotion-winning team needs to put away the weaker teams, but I don't think he is good enough to do enough against the better teams.

Let's see where he ends up this season. I'd be surprised if it was playing for one of the front-runners in our division.

I think you are right Pete, but I was just musing on the merits or otherwise of both, not that it will come to it but I just think Podge would be a better choice, we had a song for him so he must have been good ;) ;D

I don't dislike Amond at all. I was critical of Hurst for a long time because he didn't sign a scrounger who would get the easy chances LJL was missing. By and large that is what Amond did and we did significantly better against the poorer sides than we had done. But the poorer sides in L2 are a lot better than the poorer sides in the Conference so Amond was never going to do as well in L2 wether for Town or anyone else. He hadn't taken L2 by storm for Morecambe and he didn't for Hartlepool. The evidence is plain enough. He's a good lad but he needs to be at Wrexham or somewhere to really prove it again.
Posted by: Swansea_Mariner, July 1, 2017, 4:53pm; Reply: 100
Am I missing something, we didn't exactly put away most of the teams around the bottom third of the league last season. 3 points taken from the bottom team is the same as 3 taken from the top team.

Perhaps if we had an Amond to dispatch those less successful teams we would have made it to the playoffs.
Posted by: Mariner_09, July 1, 2017, 5:03pm; Reply: 101
No it isn't. They are not called 6 pointers for a no reason because of you take 3 points off a team around you, you also stop them scoring points, it can be six points difference between a win or loss in a game against a top side.
Posted by: Swansea_Mariner, July 1, 2017, 6:27pm; Reply: 102
So we finished 8 points shy of the play-off and dropped 14 points against the bottom 4 clubs and the logic of not wanting a player who supposedly only excels against cannon fodder is?
Posted by: HertsGTFC, July 1, 2017, 8:04pm; Reply: 103
Some talk on here about Vernon not being god enough but I would be more than happy to see him as the hold up man for Podge with Sam Jones in behind.
Posted by: Mariner93er, July 2, 2017, 10:32am; Reply: 104
Yes we finished 8 points off the play offs but that was mainly due to a Mr bogle getting a good amount of goals against better teams. The stats say that amond doesn't score against the better teams, and if we were relying on him for goals, that would become an issue in a promotion push this season. Of course he is a goalscorer, and has the potential to prove me wrong, but the indications are this wouldn't be the case.
