Apologies if this has been mentioned before, but apparently Exeter negotiated a sell on clause for Watkins in respect of every transfer he is involved in. How they negotiated this is something else. But that’s another £2 million in the bank for them after he moved to Saudi.

Expect them to be active in January…

Exeter are fan owned and have been struggling lately. They put a pre-emptive statement out a week ago essentially inferring that the money won’t be chiefly spent on a flurry in the transfer market.

Fair play to them, though. Excellent bit of business for them.

If he moves on a bosman at some point does that clause expire?

They've sold Wareham aswell, not sure how much they got though.

I think they're going to struggle, it wouldn't surprise if they went straight down.

I’d think they’re better than that. They’re currently 16th, having picked up a win, two draws and just the one defeat since they played us.

That said, there are a number of sides currently below them that you would anticipate rising up the league sooner rather than later. Port Vale, Chesterfield and Rotherham have to come good at some point, as will Salford who are just one place above them.

We need to find out how that clause worked and was drafted in case we’re able to insert and enforce similar in our own sell-ons.

Great work by them to ensure they continue to benefit from having developed a superb player, and to protect themselves from any of his future clubs fumbling a contract and breaking the chain. Would be great if this could become the norm from lower league clubs.

I imagine it's along the lines of 15% of all future transfer revenue received from the sale of the player with no time limit or a time limit of say 50 years.

Exeter got £1.8m from the initial sale to Brentford, then £4m from the transfer to Villa (15% of £28m)

If Brentford then had a 25% clause on the sale to Villa, a £51m sale trickles down as 15% of £13.3m - another £2m.

That's a vast amount of money for a lower division club.

You can see why the big clubs spend a couple of million here or there to run their academies to reduce the risk of having to splash out on a young player. If they can get one coming through every couple of years, they are quids in and will also make money selling those ones not quite good enough to make it at the top level. Morgan a case in point.

Remember him looking a mile above the standard when he played at BP. Scored a cracker of a goal and looked destined for higher things at that young age.

I don't know enough about their dealings to know who (if anyone) they've replaced him with, but he got 20 odd goals in L1 so he's a big miss for them you'd think.

Mind you, he looked pony at our place haha
