Who'd be a referee?

I watched last night's game through Accy's iFollow (they have full replays, so saved me getting up at 2.30am here in Aus).

It didn't have any commentary so only native sound and my lord is Artell a moaner on the touchline. I'm presuming it was the placement of the microphone/camera, but you could hear every word he was saying all game, and he was non stop berating the ref.

I like Artell, but it got to the point where I had to mute the sound as it was cringeworthy the shite he was spouting. Every decision against us was 'embarrassing', calling for reds for challenges that clearly wasn't, then telling the ref he doesn't care about player welfare because a decision didn't go our way, constantly swearing at him. It was just relentless.

I genuinely have more respect for refs after that. It takes an impressive amount of patience and self control to tolerate that, when you've got players mouthing off at you all game as well.

They're human beings and in a world where there's rightly a greater focus on mental health, it's crazy what refs still have to tolerate. It's about time football followed Rugby's lead when it comes to respect for referees.

There were a few funny moments, though. At one point just before half time, Cook shot from a stupid angle instead of crossing and Artell shouted, 'Cookie, you'll come off the pitch if you do that. Cross the ball man'.

It was clear on the Sky coverage too. I thought this was a two parter from Artell as it was at the same time Cook was showing their fans “2-0” so I thought the first bit was telling him to stop with the gesticulating.

To be fair to Artell though the two times he really went at the ref I think he had just cause. The kick out from the keeper, Morgan wasn’t challenging so the keeper had no reason to ‘protect himself’ like they do with their legs and it was a kick rather than a knee up. The second was when Turi got flattened in front of him, their lad jumped in off the ground and cleaned him up with a scissor of his back leg. I’m not saying it would have been a red card but it would have been checked by VAR had it been available.

I thought barring the keeper fouling Morgan the Ref had a decent enough game myself?

Can you remember when we used to moan about Hurst being silent and unanimated on the touch line?

Yes it was really annoying hearing his constant beating of the referee. Surely he can’t think that actually works?

If it was say Karl Robinson, Neil Harris or Phil Parkinson doing that we’d have a 20 page thread wanting to know why the league isn’t fining or suspending them.

Exactly. I’m sure the aforementioned have gained several decisions or created enough influence on games by bleating at the refs. I’d be disappointed with Artell if he didn’t do the same.

I was sat behind da on Saturday and his x rated tirade at the lines man certainly resonated around the main stand

Who'd be a referee?

It's a part-time job, and ....

So with 20 games a season, about £60K.  Was this a serious question?

Just for the downvoters for comparison: nurses in A&E get between £35K and £60K, and get rather more abuse thrown in.

But it all depends which you consider the more difficult job I suppose.  The one that save lives every day of the week, and gets abuse thrown in, or someone who gets the occasional naughty thing said to them without the threat.

Refs are shite, he can berate them all he wants as far as I’m concerned. When you get such major decisions wrong that impact the game what do you expect?
