Youth players

Just been having a chat with Diehardmariner, and we were talking about the number of youth players we currently have signed this season - after Catchpole announced a pro deal yesterday.

It lead to a conversation about the largest number of players from our youth system who have played in the same season. At the moment the highest I can find is in 2006/07, when we had 8 players from our set up make appearances:

McDermott, Croft, Bloomer, Bore, North, Heggarty, Taylor and Bennett.

Is there a higher number?

Bonus points if you can get them playing together as well. I found 2 games with 6 of them getting minutes together (Barnet and Lincoln at home).

The area that got me excited when Davis signed, was what he did at Crewe with the youth players, bringing them into the first team, which provided Crewe with a conveyor belt of players to complement the playing squad along with money from the sale of some of the youth players that had gained first football with Crewe.

Our youth team setup is now bearing fruit of the hard work gone in, by all involved within the setup, to provide David will the opportunity of giving them first professional footballing contracts.  Hopefully with David and his coaching staff they can progress these players further, which in turn will turn them into sellable assets for the club, allowing to us to move forward, without over stretching our finances too much.

Paul Hurst had his way and don't get me wrong, what he did getting us out of the National league, I will be forever grateful. However he never trusted our youth set up enough to him them an opportunity, which seemed a waste of money at the time, he would go to players he knew, or established players, which limited us to further progress.

They are two main ways to to move forward, throw as much money and hope that will be enough to get you promoted or invest in players and re-invest.

Which is the best way, depends, the likes Wrexham have done it the money way, but other clubs have not been so lucky, were as Brighton and Brentford have invested in players to sell them on for a profit and re-invest in a high calibre player to sell on for a better profit, which has proved successful up to now.

Its gone pear shape for the likes Southampton and Leicester, who sold a lot of players for big money, but did re-invest wisely and have dropped down the pyramid.

So they is a fine balance of getting right, we have taken our first step in finding a gem, improved that player and sold him for a good profit, that money has been invested in the next players, which will hopefully go to be better and the financially return is greater. Along with the investment in the youth players who can potential bring in bigger returns, as the only cost to us, has been their development.

We have produced a few youth players, that have gone to make us some money in transfer market, likes of Ryan Bennett and Mattie Pollock the most recent and Gary Croft and John Oster in the past

We will have to wait and see whether the next stage, goes according to plan, but a successful season and promotion, we mean we are heading in the right direction, with a promotion our players increase in value, which will mean a bigger return on our investment.

From a fans point of view I much prefer seeing us sign youngsters like the last 2 .Hurst as I recall didn't really want Bogle and Operation Promotion irked him and Bogle firstly played a huge part in our Promotion then made us a huge profit.

What about 03/04? Macca mansaram rowan ward heggarty hockless soames w.parker bolder nimmo pettinger?  
My concern is that some might not count as strictly ours if taken from hull etc..  don't think Simon Ford counts either.  Hmm

Is it true that less youth players in the first team affects the academy level, which i think we was set to step 4, so might be to increase the academy level for more funding,

I think you're half right there re Hurst, Bogle and Operation Promotion. I seem to remember Hurst's problem with the fundraiser was more the name of it, he didn't like the expectation and pressure of 'Operation Promotion'. On Bogle, I'm sure he was someone Hurst wanted. We outbid quite a few other clubs to sign him and Hurst also tried to bring him back for the 2021/22 season when we dropped back into Non-League but Bogle wanted to stay in the EFL

Did have a look at this. Ward and Heggarty didnt make an appearance in the season.

Hockless and Bolder, like you say, both came from Hull youth set up straight into our first team. Pettinger came via Scunny and Everton to us as well.

Gives us a season with 6 making appearances mind.

I believe Hurst wanted him start of 2014-15 season also so a year before we signed him

I thought it was Fenty that had an indirect dig at Operation Promotion but my memory could be playing tricks on me.

Something along the lines of additional pressure.
