Hi all,
I know this has been mentioned a few times on here in various threads but I don't recall seeing a rationale or answer. We know that Jamestown do not provide data/recommendations for goalkeepers, but does anyone actually know why this is?
Surely there are lots of data metrics you can collect on keepers that can identify undervalued players based on the attributes you are looking for as a team i.e. shots saved from inside/out the box, saves vs expected goal, crossed claimed, successful distribution short/long, progressive passes etc etc
I'm sure there a reasonable explanation it just seems seems strange if the data is indeed there? I'm assuming it's largely computerised analysis, would it require a largely different algorithm that they use for outfield players?
Genuinly interested to hear from anybody with knowledge in this field.

Exactly what I was looking for in terms of input, thanks for your efforts 👌

My guess would be that it's difficult to analyse a keepers data in the same way. xG already exists, but it's more a rating of the person shooting than the keeper. If somebody rifles a shot from that position an 80mph into the top corner then the keeper has no chance, but if they blast it straight at the keeper then it's an easy save. Same xG, completely different situations. Lots of goalkeeper stats would vary wildly because of the defence and how they play too, as well as how the team plays.

But do we know for sure that Jamestown do not provide data/recommendations for goalkeepers? There are many metrics used to assess a goalkeepers ability and these are widely used in recruitment in the football world. I would certainly be very surprised that Jamestown don't do this if other companies/organisations do.

The age old method of scouting and analysing Goalkeepers is used because of the unique characteristics of the position, not making it conducive to assessment, in the same way as outfield players.
That said, You’d think given the market (and apparent gap in it) people with a nose for these things, would be able to formulate some equivalent form of scoring matrix for Keepers but, apparently not!!

I'm fairly sure this was mentioned by either Artell or one of the owners in an interview a while ago - it could have been on the DN35 thinking back by either Jason or Andrew... Mike, do you recall pal?

That applies to all stats. Context is everything.

This was my thinking too, we have recognised stats available as mentioned such as XG, but a save percentage against XG, thus preventing likely goals should be fairly easy to collect data on etc, among others. We know Jamestown are incredibly selective of who they work with and pride themselves on the intelligence and depth of data they produce for those clubs, so perhaps it is simply because outfield players have far more repetitive metrics in which data can be collected to form a sound analysisnover a large sample size. Goalkeepers, in most instances have far fewer measurable actions per game so likely makes it too difficult for Jamestown to confidently assess, analyse and ultimately recommend to their partner clubs.
