Grimsby on town of culture shortlist

Fantastic news for the Town.  Must admit I’m a little baffled by how the town has got into this position, I guess the word ‘culture’ is the key.  So what do we think, does culture refer to the physical growing (culturing) of drugs?  Or is it possibly the culture of drug taking?  Either way my thanks go to every scaghead from Victor Street through to Bradley Park for making this happen and putting Great Grimsby back on the map.

The town (area) have had a lot of sh1t to deal with over the past century. There is a lot of stigma attached too which doesn’t help and the lack of investment into the area is shameful. (And I’ll add them lot down the a180 to that too!)

The area is great once you’ve been around. It’s just the like of the east marsh and nunny always seem to be the focus when people talk about’us’. A hell of a lot more money needs ploughing into the infrastructure to make the town really ‘great’ again.

I went to uni in Pontypridd and back then it was like a town that was stuck in the 70s!! Marvellous people and the stunning river taff running through it. But, like ourselves, the demise of major industry (the coal pits and hoover plant in Merthyr) has left it cast aside.

Strabane is a town just down the road from where I live now and has probably 9 or 10 big firms there that are trying to help the town get back on its feet after the Stormont executive decided that money can’t quite reach that far south west!!! O’neills sportswear have their head office there and do lots in and around the community.

Derry/londonderry secured the city of culture in

If Ull won the City of Culture in 2017, we have got every chance.

At least we speak English.

I’ve said for ages that we should be aiming for things like this, and ultimately for City Status. Why not?

Even if it doesn’t come to anything, at least it sparks the right sort of conversations. About what culture means to the town, about what should we do with the Borough Art collection? What’s the plan for conserving and reviving our industrial buildings that have been allowed to fall into ruin by an absentee Port Authority? How can we protect and enhance the architectural heritage: the docks offices, our churches, the Modernist Library, the mosaics and friezes, statues and coastline? Should we have a Town-centre theatre along the lines of a Truck or Tramshed?

One more thing: the main judge is Phil Redmond, of Grange Hill/Brookside fame. If we want to appeal to him, we should lean into the town’s isolation and unique character, even down to the slang and humour, give him an insight into a sort of “Liverpool of the East” built on realism and community storytelling.

If Grimsby can win the designation and benefit economically from it then great, I'm all for it.
However, I wouldn't want to be the person/committee landed with putting forward our case, it will be a gargantuan task with smoke and mirrors among the props.
Thrn again, there may be other forces at work....

I really hope the Town go and win this but I'm baffled in all honesty.I would argue we have a long and proud history but what is the Culture, genuine question?
