AI does not rank the Mariners in the top nine clubs in League Two. I say give  AI a Z minus.

I have zero faith in AI.

It can't even provide an accurate form guide over 10 games.

Value of AI is in the prompts.

If you just ask for a GTFC Form Guide over the last 10 games it'll be patchy because it's acting on your prompts.  Where do you want it to search for form?  Is it league games, is it included cup games?  Is it just first team games or does it include youth games?

Give prompts like it's just landed on this planet and has no idea of what football, GTFC etc. etc. are and it'll give you good responses.

But you add more as the resuklts come in - you ask your initial question and then tweak details.

I ended up telling it to intercourse off as the results were that bad

I was told in an AI workshop to prompt like talking to a child. Assume nothing and make the instructions clear. Also instruct it to retain key instructions as always live so it doesn't deviate following future prompts. Small bits of key information make all the difference - remember the "Heil bloody Hitler" scene in Enigma; the Turing Machine can't crack the code until they realise every message is signed off Heil Hitler, and also the Nazis did weather reports and Bletchley knew what the weather was so they know other words in the message - intractable code breaking calculations became solvable in minutes with the right prompts.

I wonder what Jamestown are doing with AI?

Chat GPT gave me a 30-40% chance of making the play offs.  I guess an objective observer might reach the same conclusion whereas we have some supporter bias which probably raises our expectations to 70%+.  Also, Chat GPT doesn't get to watch games and see how many chances we are missing!

52% chance according to the Cat...

Here’s an xG / xGA-driven play-off qualification estimate for Grimsby Town (top 7 in League Two) using:

Current table (Grimsby 8th on 48 pts from 30).

Team xG & xGA per match (FootyStats).

Grimsby remaining fixtures (SoccerSTATS run-in list).

1) What the xG data says about Grimsby right now

From FootyStats’ League Two xG table:

Grimsby xG: 1.61 / match (very strong; shown as #3 on that table)

Grimsby xGA: 1.21 / match (better than league average)

xG difference: +0.40 / match (top-tier promotion/playoff profile)

Table position is 8th (48 pts), right on the play-off line.

2) Remaining fixtures (Grimsby)

Grimsby have 16 matches remaining (46 – 30). Key run-in includes:

vs Walsall (H), Salford (H), Bromley (H), Crewe (H), Swindon (H)

away to Notts County, Cambridge, Chesterfield, Gillingham, Tranmere

3) Model used to turn xG into playoff probability

I ran a Monte Carlo season simulation:

Convert each team’s attack strength from xG and defence strength from xGA (relative to league averages ~1.40).

For Grimsby’s 16 listed fixtures, simulate scorelines via a Poisson goals model using both teams’ xG/xGA.

Update points for both teams in those matches.

For all other remaining matches (where we don’t have the full league fixture matrix here), simulate each team’s remaining games against a league-average opponent based on its xG/xGA strength.

This captures: (a) Grimsby’s actual opponents, (b) rivals being directly affected by Grimsby’s results, (c) xG-based team quality.

4) Result: Probability Grimsby finish top 7

Estimated probability Grimsby make the top 7: ~52% (about a coin-flip, but slightly favourable).

In the simulation, Grimsby’s:

Median finishing position: 7th

10th–90th percentile finish: 3rd to 12th

Projected points: mean ~74, with a typical range about 68–81.

5) What will swing it most

Because Grimsby are currently 1 point off 7th (Walsall on 49), the six-pointers matter a lot:

Grimsby vs Walsall (H) is immediate leverage on the line.

Away trips to Notts / Cambridge / Chesterfield are high-difficulty but also cap rivals’ totals directly.

Home games vs Bromley and Swindon are “bonus points” fixtures—getting anything boosts odds materially.

Important caveat (why this is an estimate, not “the” answer)

This is xG-driven and fixture-aware for Grimsby, but not fixture-perfect for the whole league (because I didn’t ingest every remaining League Two match pairing). That means the 52% is best read as a good-faith, data-based estimate with some model risk around how hard/soft other contenders’ run-ins are.

If you want, I can tighten it further by pulling the full remaining League Two fixture list and re-running the simulation with every match explicitly scheduled (that usually moves the probability a few points either way depending on who has the hardest run-in).

Large Language Models (LLMs) are very good at language and statistically likely next answers. They are not intelligent, or insightful. They're sycophantic bullshit machines.

I was looking on line for retro Town shirts and the little AI summary you seem to get at the top of searches stated that we traditionally play in green and white stripes.😞
