Why was it a red, since they got the penalty, shouldn't it of only been a yellow for denying a goal scoring opportunity?

Wasn't at the game and just caught the end on a laggy connection overseas so probably missed what happened.

He was already on a booking I believe

If it's intentional attempt at preventing a goal like batting it off the line or dragging back a player about to score then you still get a straight red. Double jeopardy only applies to misjudged tackles where there's a legitimate attempt to play the ball. Either way he'd have been off since he was already on a yellow.

Wasn't it a straight red? Didn't see the yellow raised as well, although I wasn't particularly looking for it. I don't really blame him for that incident as the deflection set their player up for a tap-in. He was really poor for the rest of the game, however.

Yeah it was a straight red, guessing the ref has deemed he's made no attempt to play the ball and denied a goal scoring opportunity.

Bbc shows it as straight red and no previous booking

The way Hume has been playing, I'm trying to decide whether his absence will be a bad thing or not. If we stick with 5 at the back, Glennon's lack of pace might not be such an issue. Providing he is fit and there isn't some other reason why he's not been near the team, other than falling out of favour.

Glennon and Maher are both involved in a whiplash claim so I doubt they'll play again this season. It'll be Khouri or Vernam at LWB i'd imagine.

Khouri has played at left-back in the past, I seem to think? It will be him coming in, unless perhaps Clifton comes in fit. Vernam has some good qualities, but defending isn't one of them.

Glennon > Hume

Dead ball deliveries, energy, speed etc etc. Glennon has a licence to attack and is far less exposed in a back 5.

Hume has shown he can be a liability and ‘lose his head’ will stupid challenges in games where we can’t afford to be reduced to 10 men. I don’t see an improvement on Glennon….

The amount of compensation you receive for a whiplash claim with the new claim regulations now in place would not be a reason for their omission from the team, and I know this from my personal experience of making a claim.

Glennon does not have any energy or speed. However, I'd say his delivery into the box is probably more reliable than Hume's and he's probably better going forward as well. I'm not a great fan of Glennon due to the lack of pace, but this shouldn't be such an issue in the back 5 that we've been playing. Glennon is better than Hume in the air, as well.

Add in  consequential loss ie we are relegated because of their absence as our barrister will eloquently explain and the claim suddenly becomes substantial. I pointed this out weeks ago.

Forza you’ll know this.

If the ref doesn’t show a yellow does that mean the offence in isolation would be seen as a straight red & result in a longer ban?

If it’s a straight red, as it appeared to be, then he was sent off for DOGSO. Therefore only 1 match. Would be the same for 2 cautions too.

Just so I can get my head round this.  Are you saying that Maher and Glennon aren't in the team, which almost means we're heading into the weekend with just four available defenders, is owing to a gamble taken on the amount of compensation we (as the football club) are about to garner as a result of their accident?

Both were at the game on Monday. Apparently Glennon is fit and available, Maher not. If that’s the case Glennon seems nail on to start on Saturday. Just hope we get the good version and not someone who can’t be arsed.

From what i've heard, both are unavailable due to the whiplash thing. Certainly don't believe Glennon is available because if so why on earth would you have Evan Khouri who's just coming back from a serious illness on the bench over Glennon? I can't remember the last time Glennon was in the 18. They've been at every home game and to the naked eye look totally fine.

Artell gave update prior to the Bradford game, Glennon is fit and training well, Maher has a thigh/hamstring strain so not available.
As others have said, just hope the decent Glennon shows up, maybe put HC at wing back to cover him if he marauder forward.

If Glennon is available and fit, it baffles me that he hasn't at least sat on the bench for the last few games - especially yesterday.

No defender on the bench and to be completely honest not really anything that resembles someone who could do a job either and as has been pointed out left sided cover provided by a lad who dropped over a stone in weight due to illness.

Glennon hasn't featured from the 0-0 at Accrington on 2nd Feb, the same day Hume made his debut.  Maher last a further two games, the last of which was the 5-1 tonking by Donny.  I think (happy to be corrected) it was two games later  (FGR at home) when they were both involved in the car accident?

Should be on for his set piece delivery at least though, the amount of overhit free kicks and corners into the box yesterday from Hume was nothing short of embarrassing.

I'm not convinced that Hume is any better at defending that Glennon! He's certainly quicker which might be enough to win him the place. Very disappointed with his delivery from set pieces, as I seem to think he was reportedly good in this area. That said, it's not so long ago that we were all moaning about how it was Glennon whacking in all the set pieces to little effect. The little effect is probably more to do with the players attacking the ball.

Hume’s pedigree suggests he’s better than what he’s shown so far, which is below par and was really not good on Saturday. Big contributor to not winning the game.

I remain quite bemused that Hume has played all of his career at a higher level, because he doesn't look like somebody playing within himself at the moment.

I thought he started adequately, nothing more, then improved to look decent, but he has faded a bit and I think he was definitely poor on Saturday even without his error for the red/pen.

It's funny cos he is one of those players who some people say is great and above the level and others who think he is dreadful (probably Glennon fans at a guess). I think he has been in between, I do think he's defensively noticeably better than Glennon, but certainly doesn't offer as much as him going forward.

That what I was thinking. Overall i think he has been pretty decent, not including Monday.

I must be one of the few who thought he actually put some decent crosses in. We never seem to win an offensive header is more of the problem. The defenders kept making their runs to early and so weren't attacking the ball at the right time. He was hitting some great areas but our players couldn't seem to anticipate where the space was. Saying that there were a couple of shockers.

I'm not a fan of Glennon and I'm also not a fan of Hume!

Glennon too slow but stronger in the air than Hume. I'd say his delivery from set pieces is probably a bit better.

Hume more mobile but weak in the air and I wouldn't say he's a great defender, either. Not much to choose between them.

I'd have Vernam left wing back if i'm honest, we lack pace and someone that can make them worry about going the other way. He's both footed and direct, would 100% be a better choice than what we've got.
Posted by: Maringer, April 2, 2024, 10:22pm; Reply: 38
We'd have to rely on somebody else to do most of his defending, though. I suppose if Khouri was fit enough, he could perhaps play on the left of a midfield 3 to do this role (he's played left-back, I seem to think?), but I'm not convinced that Andrews is quite quick enough to do the same, though I don't think he's too bad a player.

Well I am a Glennon fan, but accept he’s guilty of the odd rickett, and I agree that we’ve missed his quality going forward which is far in excess of anything Hume can offer and he would benefit defensively by having more support through the three centre backs. Ideally I would like Khouri or Ainley to play on that left hand side but given their lack of match time, and given Smith played well yesterday, I would play Clifton on the left and probably stick with Gavon the right. Can’t say I’m comfortable with that trio and if Vernam was match fit I would contemplate him on left and Harry on the right which might give us more energy and pace going forwards whilst not putting too much pressure on our back players.

Wilson and Rose up front and you never know we might just win.

Have to say when you sit here thinking who to play in midfield it ain’t easy to identify any three that give confidence in their collective ability to dominate a game.

Oh well

You see it in a lot of sides, you attack with a formation and defend in a different one. You play with 5 to allow your wing backs to get involved, you could quite easily shuffle across when he's going forward and set up as a 4. It'd make us less one dimensional, against Barrow Ben Whitfield was doing the exact same at left wing back and he's a winger, he was that direct that Clifton was so worried about what was going the other way he couldn't get forward.

Hume isn’t poor, but looks like a player that’s been out a while and is taking time to get to previous standards.

Glennon, I’m a massive fan of his, the change of formations may help the defensive frailties but I firmly believe he’s one of the best deliverers of a ball I’ve seen in this league. Open play ball (specifically on an overlap) is better than dead ball but I’d like to see him given a shot to get up the pitch and get some decent service into the front two.
Posted by: neverapen, April 3, 2024, 4:46pm; Reply: 45
I think generally Hume has done pretty well since he arrived but he has been off the boil the past couple of games. What he has also brought is a bit of competition for Glennon. Assuming that Glennon comes in on Sat, I'm intrigued to see how he performs, the wing back position could really suit his game and we have really lacked some of the quality balls on corners / free kick that he's capable on his day. Glennon hasn't had the best year, first with his personal stuff and then the car crash, so I'm routing for him on Sat.

I like Hume, but its got a taste of the Emmanuel thing written all over it.
Comes down a level, plays well(occasionally) and refuses a new deal with the hope of going higher....basically shoved himself in the shop window
Posted by: diehardmariner, April 4, 2024, 9:31am; Reply: 47
Glennon came back in in their first game under the caretakers and looked much more like his loan version from 2020.  Faster, stronger, better with the ball, even better defending. That continued until the New Year time under Artell when he, like most of the defence, just forgot how to defend and he regressed.

There's a player in there, a real hell of a player.   Challenge is getting out of him consistently, that he's failed to do it so far is why he's found himself out the side of a struggling fourth tier outfit.

Absolutely unsold on Hume.  Moments where he shows his pedigree and you can see he's operated at a much higher standard.  Then he looks completely lost and out of place.  In many ways just a more recent version of Glennon.  I don't think for a second that he'll be here after the summer and I'm really not bothered about that.

He wasn't a world beater but I think we discarded Danny Amos too quickly.  He was just steady, dependable without any frills.  He's arguably back at his natural level in the fifth tier but it's not like we're operating much above that at the minute is it?

We've failed to have a decent left-back on a consistent basis since 16/17 with Danny Andrew.  That's embarrassing really and isn't another position where we've suffered so badly.

I understand that Hume has his critics, but I quite like him.
Presumably he will be available for Harrogate away next Tuesday, but misses Newport.

What’s the problem with Clifton? Is he injured? If fit I’d play him as left back in a 3-4-2-1. Otherwise Glennon if fit or Khouri.

We do not need to recall Amos even if it’s possible.
