Ice Factory 1,000 capacity venue and next door hotel approved.

If this is grant supported and a value hotel this is quite an astute piece of development. I've tried to book hotels for business and mid week games and unless you want to stay at the St James or something where price does not match value then it can be a challenge.

Also some may think a venue for a 1,000 people is an odd choice but looking at the diversity of businesses in the are and no doubt the despite to attract more it seems like there is a lack of this type of thing too.

Great idea, any ideas of the timescale? Also will have to negotiate the gestapo that work on the gate šŸ˜‰

What's not to like. An eyesore being refurbished and a new hotel etc. fantastic news for the town so much more could be done on the docks hopefully this is the catalyst

Anything which could help to regenerate the docks would be a really good thing. Let's hope it goes ahead and brings some money into the town.

You can imagine some away fans fancying a night out in Cleethorpes during the warmer months might be happy to stay there as it's not too far from the ground (assuming the Premier Inns/Travelodges are full!).

Good news, but have they secured any funding yet?

Id love to know the timescale that Shutes has put on this. I reckon nothing will happen, if ever, for at least 5 years

Could well be right. With interest rates ridiculously high at present (because the BoE is stupidly desperate to drive the country into recession), unless Shutes & Co are self-funding, it will cost them a fortune to borrow the money for construction.

It might be worth sitting on it for a year or two as the BoE will have no option but to cut rates once the recession begins. It just depends how quickly they drop them. Not quickly enough, is my guess.

A few years ago Shutes wanted to build a new stadium on the docks.  Maybe he thinks he is more likely to get permission for that if a hotel is already in place.

Did it ever come out as to why he dropped out of the consortium not long before a deal was done? Perhaps he may still have an eye on investing in the future if all goes well with his plan.

Iā€™m trying to work out, based on the below image, where Schutesā€™ proposed stadium was supposed to be. If Iā€™ve got my bearings correct, it looks like itā€™s sat on top of the water between Gorton Street and Murray Street.

Iā€™m no engineer, but aside from the cost of the stadium itself, wouldnā€™t ā€œfilling inā€ that area of the docks be prohibitively expensive? I know Everton have done it at Bramley Moore, but thatā€™s a Ā£500m stadium.

Yeah I can't remember exactly where it was stated but it definitely involved filling in this part of the dock:

The whole thing sounded like a gigantic pipe dream, no idea what sort of funding streams he was eyeing up for this but it wouldn't surprise me if his last minute departure from the 1878 takeover troika had something to do with the other two telling him the new stadium aspect was a complete non-starter (and it seemed that was the only part of it Shutes had any interest in anyway, he's never been a Town supporter to my knowledge).

You need to go through security to get to it because it is on the docks. How will it fit in with this?

There wasn't a lack of this type of thing when the Winter Gardens existed but then somebody approved a company buying it then knocking it down to make flats. One of the worst things to happen to the town's local culture and entertainment, hopefully this new venture can once again bring that type of music and entertainment locally that's been missing for many years. Not just a place to attract larger bands but a place where local music can also grow.

Move the security gate . With a little bit of forethought No2 Dock could have been filled in years ago using rubble from the row of smoke houses that were demolished on Murray Street. There still remains a lot of concrete rubble in the remaining pontoon that forms a four feet high walkway around two sides of No2 Dock. Just needs bulldozing in . Imagine having a football pitch built on top of the original Pontoon ,in the shadow of the Dock Tower . If Carlsberg did football grounds ....U.T.M.

I honestly don't get it, why would anyone want to build a hotel (or stay in one) in that location with Riby Square and Freemo on its doorstep?

I agree why would anyone want to stay there? If itā€™s built and itā€™s a big if how does it change the dynamics of the dock , for me it doesnā€™t. Without massive investment it will be a swanky hotel in a shithole much more needs to be done

Several articles on it say the hotels target audience will be contractors for that area, and to be fair most of them currently stay at b&bā€™s in cleethorpes or St. James hotel, this location would be much better.

You're not bothered that the BoE is driving the country into recession? Interesting.

It's not actually politics, incidentally. Just ineptitude by those who are supposed to steer the economy. Both the Tories and Reeves are stupid enough to be cheering it on. They are just about as bad as each other.

Makes me wonder if something else is in the pipeline.

Sadly, irrelevant of culture significant, the whole area needs knocking down and starting again which would cost serious Ā£Ā£Ā£Ā£

Wind farm workers are mostly working on rotations, and lots from away. They won't necessarily move here.
It's similar to the hotels around Aberdeen and Norwich, also Humberside to a lesser extent, airports. They are mostly filled with offshore workers, either contractors who day trip to them, or core workers who are put up the night before they mobilise...

Certain "ladies" that work around there will rent rooms for a short stay. The rooms could be rented out a couple of times a day. Worth a fortune to them. :'(

Those soulless flats.  Did a Northern Soul gig there (Winter Gardens, not the flats).  Lovely venue.  The owner asked if we'd made any money.  We said we'd broke even.  He rummaged in his drawer and fished out a tenner and told us to get a few drinks.   Nice of him that.

I doubt that any contractors stay on Isaacs Hill these days as they're mostly taking in guests from the Social Services.
The days of staying in a Guest house and sharing bathroom etc have long gone.
Our Town has a critical shortage of decent Hotel rooms with most of the hotels we have constantly full.
The location on the docks would be perfect for business and contractors customers.

Are yes Jimmy Jackson, who was the other guy ex miltary, was it Gallaway? I seem to remember.
Had many a good night in the Winter Gardens, from discos, gigs, beer festivals, cricket annual awards night, Grimsby player of the year awards, german wine tasting nights, general use of the bar and of course the bags ball on a Wednesday night.

The Cleethorpes Premier Inn is always rammed too. People can question ā€œwhoā€™d want to stay in Grimsbyā€, but the answer, surprisingly, is ā€œloadsā€.

It's been reported that ABP are looking at building a water tank for movie making.  I'm not sure exactly where that would be.  If it's the old fish dock, then that presumably prevents a stadium being built there.

I thought there might have been at least one person here with an idea as to the possible size of a movie tank.

I did some research: Pinewood has an indoor tank that is 20m x 10m x 6m deep, and an outdoor tank 67m x 63m x 1m deep.  Something similar on the old fish dock might still leave room for a football stadium.

Shutes said there would be more planning applications before the end of this month, so maybe we'll get some great news tomorrow or next Thursday.

You could be right.  Shutes said he pulled out of the takeover due to "personal reasons", but that clearly hasn't stopped him pressing ahead with the ice factory.

Maybe we'll get some clarification tomorrow.

Shutes' personal reasons might have been that he didn't want to lose a lot of money. As the saying goes, buying into a football club is a good way of turning a small fortune into a much smaller one...

When the UK government can back Jim Ratcliffe's controversial new plastic plant in the Netherlands to the tune of Ā£600,000,000, the electrical and plumbing of Buck House to the tune of Ā£350,000,000, the upgrading of London termini to the tune of between Ā£1,000,000,000 to Ā£4,000,000,000, and their own Palace of Westminster for a figure variously touted as between Ā£3,000,000,000 and 30,000,000,000 as well as rebuilding a tumbledown hotel in my neck of the woods for Ā£11,000,000+ Then there should be a clear case for building a sports facility in Grimsby that COULD be a powerhouse for the generation of green electricty, the encouragement of other green technologies, improving employment opportunities, transforming public road transport to electric vehicles at low cost, providing facilities for youngsters to play and excel at numerous sports, and many other pluses for an area that bounces along on the bottom of the country's deprived areas.

It just needs someone with a vision...

The hotel I told you about near me wasn't!  The Morecambe Eden Project isn't.

But there's another advantage to this year ..... the election. Money will be thrown about with abandon.  We want some of that!  And politicians will be falling over themselves to "fix" things and show their green credentials.  We'd be doing them a favour by taking a load of cash off their hands... ;D  And of course that excess HS2 money has to go somewhere....
