Team for Sutton?

Now we look pretty safe and the big one coming up on Sunday who should Hurst rest and who should he play?

I believe Red cards in the league carry across to the FA Cup.

I’d drop as many first teamers as possible.

I never thought I’d see the day that GTFC needed to rest players for a cup game…

Definitely not for a quarter final.

I thought Emmanuel looked leggy again yesterday so I'd give him a rest. I'd also definitely want Green and Holohan playing at Brighton, so give them a breather.

I suspect he'll start McAtee/Danilo at Brighton, and play three at the back so I don't see how Otis fits into that, other than as an impact sub to give us some fresh legs. Lloyd is cup tied so he's nailed on to start for me. Be nice to see Ev get another run out.

Id rest everyone we can who is going to start on Sunday including max because an injury or sending off to him and its curtains before we even play. Plus it gets minutes into fringe players who may be coming on as subs or needed for any other reason

Something like

Battersby

Efete
Pearson
Smith

Amos
Wearne

Morris
Hunt
Khouri

O'Neil
Lloyd

Subs
Gallagher (if fit enough for bench)
Green
Maher
Khan
Scannell
Dickson Peters
Essel

Wearne was playing wing back at times for Torquay I believe. Efete or maher has to start if we play 3 at the back I think as we don't have replacements for all.

I want to see us give ourselves the best possible shot at sunday so Sutton is merely a distraction - we're not going up or down  so it's not important enough to risk any starters.

This. Brighton have a blood and thunder derby against Palace on Wednesday, a game they cannot afford to rest players for. We need to take every advantage we can get; we’re going to need it.

I like that line up for sure, I’d probably start Green ahead of Clifton but only for more minutes for Green and a bit less work for Clifton who’ll start next Sunday for sure.

Clifton definitely needs a rest - been having to come off during games or on being sub yesterday, they were probably hoping to avoid needing to use him altogether yesterday.

I'd play our strongest 11 who are 100% match fit and have no niggles or anything at all.
For me Emmanuel looked leggy and tired so players like him I'd rest. I'd start Lloyd as he can't play the Cup and he's out best Central forward player in my opinion anyway.

For me it's about how you train. I'd be working more on strategies and practice certain situations rather than game practice matches or intense fitness work outs. Keep them ticking over and their muscles working but as little as possible.

Play as many kids as League regulations allow us to.

Plus any first-teamers who won't be starting on Sunday (Battersby, Pearson, O'Neil, Wearne, Lloyd*, Scannell (!), TDP, ...?)

*cup-tied, isn't he?

Yeah, I'll settle for a point now.  ::)

If we play our best eleven people will moan as they'll say we need to rest them.

If we play a make shift team, as per Carlise, people will moan because it's not our best eleven; especially if we lose!

Does anybody want to take on Hurst's job for the net 2 games? I don't.

Sutton away is the sort of game we've been losing this season so there's a strong case for not risking key players in what will be a tough physical game that even our strongest XI would struggle to win.

                Crocombe
Efete   Waterfall   Smith    Amos
          Morris     Khouri
Wearne    O'Neill      Khan
                  Lloyd

If he wants to maintain the current system of 3-5-1-1 then we'll need a makeshift RWB as Emmanuel definitely needs a rest. Taylor to come on in the second half as usual along with Hunt for some minutes.

He certainly does and to no benefit. He wades into every dispute and too often sends dolly kicks straight to opposing centre backs. He also played at least one loose ball to Efete who is the last person you want in possession facing our goal. Needs to watch the match back on video and sharpen his game.

Self confidence can lapse into arrogance.

Correct. He’s been a liability of late. Could have been sent off at Southampton and his dilly dallying at Carlisle cost us a goal. Very good footballer no doubt but there are glaring shortcomings to his game.

I think there will be changes but definitely not to that degree, he’s been asking the players to focus on the league I doubt he’d be that hypocritical in his selection.

“Liability” f**k me that’s a bit harsh, the kids learning his trade, and like you say he’s a very good footballer who like every player will never fix and develop their game purely on the training ground or via cameos.

If you measure a player on “what might have happened” in a game you’d never pick a striker as “they should have scored” and Greeny shouldn’t travel on Tuesday as “he might” have given away a penalty yesterday versus Rochdale.

Some of our fans think that perfect, flawless footballers exist and that we should expect that at Grimsby Town, in L2. Like those who get cross because we haven’t signed a 20 goals a season striker who is also a target man, a creator, a mobile, ‘in behind’ runner who never has a bad game and scores 2 goals every match. That other clubs don’t rate. And is happy to be paid £600 a week. For 1 year. Or something.

He was the player caught on the ball at Carlisle, however, we were guilty of collectively overplaying at the back and he happened to be the man on the ball when the music stopped.

I would play all the cup-tied fellers, then pack in as much youth and game-starved players as possible, even if we're playing people out of position.  Give Essel etc 90 mins, the exposure will be good for them plus you've got 90 mins of footage and data to analyse with them to see where improvements are needed.  Eff the result.

Crocombe needs to rest those hamstrings so they can be deployed when we're 2-1 up after 80 mins....

I don't think we're going to see quite as many changes as some in here think we will. Clifton and McAtee played well under 90mins on Saturday, so I'd expect both to start. We have enough CMs that rotate as it is anyway. I think we'll see something like...

Crocombe
Efete
Smith
Waterfall
Amos
Green
Clifton
Morris
McAtee
Khan
Lloyd

I don't think we'll be seeing the likes of Battersby or anyone that hasn't been in the matchday squad of late. It's still a league match, Hurst will want to win it and there could be around 500 or so Town fans there wanting to see a win.

I'm sure Sutton will take this game seriously and will be harbouring thoughts of a play-off position - looking unlikely but possible. Can you imagine the mental effect that would have on reserves and fringe players if we got a tonking , especially Battersby? By all means rest 2 or 3 expected first -timers but we must still  field a strong side. Possibly losing doesn't help the squad as a unit and could easily affect the mind-set of some players.

Hadn't heard of that rule before but looks to come into effect later this month.. Expect a few changes but still a fairly strong team..

25 REQUIREMENT TO PLAY FULL STRENGTH SIDES IN LEAGUE MATCHES

25.1  Each Club shall play its full strength in all Matches played under the auspices of The League unless some satisfactory reason is given. In the event of the explanation not being deemed satisfactory the Board shall refer the matter to a Disciplinary Commission which has the power to impose such penalties as it shall think fit.

Guidance

From the fourth Thursday in March, any Team Sheet for a League game should include at least 10 outfield players who featured on the Team Sheet for the League game before.

Yes it can and doesn't include keepers, so with 7 named on the bench now, it gives a lot of leeway.

But if two left feet is correct, then it hasn't come into effect yet, although I'm sure there are rules already in place.

Hurst doesn't really have a track record of playing 'weakened' teams, he likes consistency and continuity. I would imagine that anyone who got a knock or similar on Saturday will get a rest but I very much doubt we'll see Battersby. Might see Khouri start.

Remember, everyone gets an extra day recovery because we play on Sunday v Brighton.

He playedan extremely weakened team in the last league match before the notts county game, different circumstances I know though.

I would hope we rest Waterfall who is 33, has played loads of games and taken 2 knocks to the head in recent games. Also think clifton needs a rest but to be honest we really could do with keeping players fresh for Sunday,I doubt we will exceed 25% possession!

Maher is essential to our game. Not to be risked.   Khan still being managed back from injury and one of few with adequate skill set. Again too risky.

Orsi excellent in previous rounds and deserves to be allowed same care and preparation as Taylor.

Think orsi is the only of our out and out forwards eligible (ie him and taylor) that is fitr enough for a 90 isn't he? So I'd have thought he'd be protected, that's how it's worked on previous rounds with him rested beforehand.

Danilo can't do 90 mins. He was absolutely spent after an hour in both Luton games. Fortunately at Southampton, where he was done again after an hour, we had Taylor to bring on. Be surprised if we don't do that again on Sunday.

Even without the ruling coming into play yet, we've surely got a decent mitigation for wholesale changes simply because of the volume of games we've had in a short period of time.  11 in 33 before Saturday was it, making it 13 in 37/8 days?

Can't believe I'm saying it but I wouldn't mind one bit if we went with the youth side.  The league season has gone for us now, we're neither going up or down and I don't think there's all that much financial benefit in finishing 13th as opposed to 17th.

Always an argument for momentum but we've not needed it so far.

1st Round - Plymouth.  Went in with back-to-back away defeats at Barrow and Hartlepool behind us.
2nd Round - Cambridge.  4 games without a win, just a single point picked up from 12 (Stevenage at home)
3rd Round - Burton. Previous game was a home win over Stockport but two festive defeats prior to that, disappointing ones too at Harrogate and at home to Salford.
4th Round - Luton.  Only one game played between rounds 3 and 4, an emphatic hammering at Swindon.
4th Round Replay - Luton.  3-0 away win at Crewe.
5th Round - Southampton.  2 Home draws to Harrogate and Orient.

I wouldn't put Clifton in the squad. If he's on the bench he's likely to be needed, like on Saturday, which means he doesn't get the rest.  He's very important and is carrying a niggle.  Why even risk him?  I think on Saturday against Rochdale a few arguably played there way into the side with a couple playing there way out of it.  Green was as good as Holohan was anonymous whereas Khan added that little bit of guile we've lacked.  If Hurst is prepared to break the system that has served us well in the last few rounds of the cup is another question altogether.  I think he'll stick with the three-man midfield at Brighton but with Hunt making way for Green from the Southampton side.  Front two picks itself really.  Of the back 5 the only question is if Smith comes in and if he does is it for Efete or Emmanuel?

I can see just one change from the Southampton side (Hunt out, Green in) which means Smith, Amos, Khouri, Hunt, Morris, Khan will all start tonight and then on the bench at the weekend.  Don't think we've the option numbers wise to rest Maher but I'd be very tempted to give Waterfall a breather and put Pearson in.

Agree with all that. We have very little on our side by way of advantages over Brighton, but the fact they have an attritional game against Palace tomorrow night is one of them.

We have to use every tool we’ve got on Sunday to stand even the remotest of chances, and if that means getting thumped at Sutton then so be it. I’d be surprised if we saw more than 2 or 3 outfield players who Hurst intends to start at the weekend line up tonight, which probably means reverting to something more akin to a 4-3-3.

Crocombe

Efete  Smith  Maher  Amos

Hunt  Morris  Khouri

O’Neill  Lloyd  Dickson-Peters

Not sure if Gallacher is fit or not, but if he is I wouldn’t be surprised to see him feature somewhere, along with Wearne and Essel at some point.

I dont get this fringe players it first teamers? The majority of the squad has been involved in sone great performances and great results. 1 bad performances everyone jumps on a individual and singles them out. The last 2 performances havent been great 😂 for the ‘ first teamers ‘. We got lucky a southampton as VAR won. Think we need to concentrate on the leauge form as it hasnt been great.

Even if we won 10 of our last 13 games in the league, that would see us finish on 72 points.  I'm not convinced that would be enough for the play-offs.  Nor are we, in all honesty, good enough to get that level of form and consistency anyway.

Pulling a result out the bag at Brighton is really unlikely, but if it happens it's an absolute game changer for this club in every possible sense.  Let's take away the fact that we, a fourth tier club, would be in the semi-finals of the most iconic club cup competition in the world, arguably in the whole sporting world never mind just football.  But financially and in terms of profile I couldn't even begin to imagine what that would do for this club.  It would a completely different stratosphere to what we currently dream about.

Even with those 17-1 odds that are currently on offer with some bookmakers, they look favourable compared to what would be needed to make something of this league season. Beating Brighton is more likely than us going on some mental run over the next 13 games to get in the play-offs...to then have to beat two sides who have been good all season to achieve promotion.  We're talking cup final form for 16 consecutive games.

intercourse the league.  All in on Sunday.  I wanna see Town in the drawer or the semi-finals.

Khan for DP I would think which makes it a stronger side and gives Khan some needed minutes. DP can replace him after an hour or so so he's not too tired and gives DP a bit of experience too.

My initial thinking was that Khan might be needed at Brighton, but it’s a fair point - if anything he probably needs some minutes under his belt.

Aren't Sutton a land of the giants team? I  which case a 3 at the back with smith Pearson maher might appeal to Hurst.

To be honest though he seems extremely reluctant to use Pearson now, even at times I would have thought he would. I do hope he rests Waterfall altogether tho despite this being just the sort of game that calls for him, and unfortunately I can see him being used for that reason.

Incidentally surely scannell has to get on the pitch tonight, why have we continued to employ him if not to at least give some other players 20 minutes downtime if needed, the likes of Khan say who could be needed Wednesday.

Even if we did beat Notts County we'd have to play Wrexham at home and probably Solihull in the final.....it's never going to happen.

I don't think we were ever chasing down such an ambitious position last season though, even when we dropped into the bottom half of the table the points gap was comparatively small wasn't it?

Either way, after the win on Tuesday I've changed my mind and think it's on the cards.  Anything less than a FA Cup/Play-off double will be a great underachievement this season.

Cup Final on June 3rd, playoff final the week before. Going to be another short preseason lads! What state are Michee, Holohan, Waterfall, Harry etc going to be in come the end of next season?!
