My guess would be:

                      Orsi       McAtee

        Clifton           Hunt          Holohan
Glennon                                         Emmanuel
        Maher       Waterfall        Smith

                         |  Max  |

Subs: Efete, Morris, Taylor, Amos, Gallacher, Scannell, +1 more

From the 'SaintsWeb' forum:

May as well go all out in the Cup. After today's excrement show we are down. Let's try and do a Wigan.

>>> Selles basically confirmed we will rotate but seeing how bad the first XI are I doubt we'll be much weaker.

>>> If fit Mara, A. Armstrong, Edozie, Diallo, Alcaraz, Djenepo, Caleta-Car, Salisu, McCarthy will feature

Edit: Saints fans are not overly optimistic - this made me smile.

9 subs in the cup so probably dickson Peters, battersby, and either essel/khan/pearson

Same as yesterday except Orsi for Lloyd..  Looking at the highlight last night against Leeds we certainly have more than a chance. Leeds made them look certain relegation fodder and they themselves aren't world beaters

Efete waterfall maher
Emmanuel holohan hunt glennon
  Mcatee  clifton
    Orsi
Subs, battersby Smith Morris Khan Taylor dicksonpeters
Cropper khouri scannell

i think smith will start for the simple reason we will be doing lots of defending & efete more attacking cb out of the two

I think Taylor starting is a good call. He’ll ruffle a few feathers for sure, so they’ll know they’re in a game. Secondly who knows he might just create an opening or 2 for McAtee. If he only lasts the first half it’s better than nothing. Also if we leave it until we’re 2 or 3 down then it becomes a waste of time and therefore a wasted opportunity. #UTM

I would like Taylor to be fit enough to start but I suspect Hurst will think that it’s a risk not worth taking.

You may well be right, time will tell. However with us being fairly safe now in the league (hopefully!!) it would be nice if Hurst said sod let’s give this game a real go!! Still we’ll find out in 3 days time. #UTM

Odds of 9-1 for a win in 90 mins look good.  They are struggling and will field a weakened team.  They are only a few league places above Luton. They also have another main priority.

Southampton manager Ruben Selles used to be David Nielsen's assistant a few years back at Danish club Aarhus GF. They won a trophy together.

There's your tenuous Town link for Wednesday!

I wonder if they'll rest Ward-Prowse — their prospects of surviving in the PL seem weak but they're not exactly cut adrift. Things will feel worse because of their defeat yesterday and who it was against. Losing a six-pointer will be hard to take.

They won't want to risk their best player getting injured in a cup game. They'll need him for their PL survival efforts.

In monetary terms, finishing 17th in the PL is a bigger achievement than winning the FA Cup.

They play Leicester on Saturday who are only 3 points above relegation themselves. Win that and things start looking rosier for them again.

With that in mind, I'd be surprised if they don't make a lot of changes.

Question - if we're a goal down with 5 minutes to go on Wednesday, would you want to bring on Cropper?

I would- somehow the long throw of maher isn't quite as good or as long and we don't seem to make much of it. With 9 on the bench I'd want cropper on there just for his throws - whatever level of player your up against that's a real weapon, and to be honest without it we're probably not going up last year.

I can't see it though as Hurst hasn't had him on the bench for any other games, but with 9 subs you just never know. It would also mean a long throw specialist on both sides of the pitch with maher, seeing as we don't like to send someone across from there side of the pitch unless it's desperate like the playoffs

Think he played in the Lincs Cup game last week, so he'll probably be fit for the bench.

Gallaghers available I believe, also scannel. Cropper played in the lincs Cup and is clearly off being able to start but would surely be fit enough for 5 minutes at the end if we need to just go long throws. So I think there are a fee decisions to make bench wise.

However u don't think Hurst will consider cropper as he will just think we can leave long throw efforts to maher if we do go with that, but to me there is a significant difference in long throw ability between them. Enough to at least give cropper consideration for the bench when you can have 9 on there.

A Maher throw is a mere sling shot compared to Cropper’s 50 megaton thermonuclear bomb. The Jordan Cropper story is already a great one, and one that will live on in Town folklore, but wouldn’t this just be an incredible way to immortalise himself as a Mariner?

I have a funny feeling in my stomach.

I’d go with the team that beat Luton, barring injuries and the addition of Johnny Mac - they deserve it!

Actually think we’re might do ok - can’t see us being embarrassed, Saints have recently beat Chelsea. Although we would probably have a good go at them at the minute.

Think we’ll snore and go down 2-1. Heads (and Harry’s) held high!!

If it was me, I’d select Amos ahead of Glennon as I think he’s in better form and fresher, plus a bit more physically strong. I think it’ll almost certainly be 3 at the back. Hope he goes with Hunt-Holohan-Clifton as we will have opportunities to play, to pass etc. Also, you’d have to think that our best theoretical chance of scoring is from an attacking set piece, and Hunt’s delivery is generally the best in the squad. Wish Otis Khan was fit as he’s got pace and skills from wide positions and I think that’s another way to get at them. Obviously JM will play and I personally think he’ll start Taylor as that is tried and tested and established and the management will want to capitalise on any strengths we have, I reckon. Also, they know Southampton won’t have seen that pair in action this season when scouting, so might be pushing that edge.
Could be wrong.

Can't see us going with McAtee as a lone striker, he's really not suited to it. Think it'll be Taylor or Orsi up front with JM coming in for Green (from Luton lineup). He still offers workrate and can be pushed a little deeper if required.

Morris might get the nod ahead of Hunt just because he has the defensive edge. Think Smith and Amos may get the nod over Efete and Glennon for the same reasons.

The Southampton newspaper view is that that they will have a strong midfield.  Probably with Ward-Prowse in as he is rarely rested,  3 in midfield for them. They are not strong elsewhere, by
PL standards anyway. An old or young keeper as well.

Surprisingly, they thought their (possible) lineup would allow us to attack.  Either they don’t think that there is a high risk of us scoring,  and/or want to pick us off on the break.

Interesting.

Agree about mcatee he isn't a lone striker, this season has shown that. He would be better used to replace one of the midfielders if we go 4 in midfield and 1 up front as against luton, or we could utilise him in his normal role behind orsi or taylor.

Morris is the more physical of hunt or Morris but for me he is off form and too much of a risk at giving the ball away, and Hunt has the better dead ball delivery anyway.

Glennon has been in good form going forward but he's defensively suspect and Amos has played well against luton, I suppose it's possible he will come in. I'd be really surprised at efete being dropped though, Hurst always seems to have liked having him in when we've gone to a back 3/5

Southampton have a history of doing well against lower-league teams, having lost just one of their last 32 FA Cup matches against such sides (W25, D6). Manager Rubén Sellés will hope his team can live up to that tradition as Southampton’s last four competitive home wins have all come in cup competitions.

Smith in for Maher for me.  Smith has more pace and did well in the promotion final.
