Austin starting for Swindon, hopefully he’s not 100% fit but even at 60-70% you’d imagine he’ll give us a tough afternoon

Has O'Neill been out on loan anywhere else this season?  I ask because he has only been in the 1st team squad 4 times this season and from what I can gather for a total of 5 minutes!  Also, at 19 years old, is he capable of playing in the rough and tumble of League 2.  I'm not against his inclusion, I just thought when I saw his age and appearances, we might have someone better to play there. Thoughts?

If he didn’t come from the area and make his name at the club there’s absolutely no way he’d be playing L2 football

Hoping he has a stinker, but absolutely no doubt that he’s a top striker at this level

Firstly, google and wikipedia do exist. Secondly, he's 18. Thirdly, he played over an hour in their FA Cup match last week. Finally, you have no idea how good he is or isn't

Tondeur and Gritton both incapable of telling Khan and Clifton apart. They've called the former the latter about five times and we're only three minutes into the match.

He's 18 and played Champinship 14 mins as 3 x sub, 61mins FA cup 6 mins EFL cup. He was was out early this season with an injury, however PH must think a lot of him to play him this early, he still hasn't unpacked. Let's give the lad a chance before we chew him out.

What the intercourse are we playing at with these corner routines? McAtee stood out by the corner flag but we're not playing it short to him? Hitting it low straight to the defender at the front post for an early clearance or directly to Holohan on the edge of the box for him to miscontrol it and let them in directly on the counter? Just take a proper corner and stop messing about.

Rubbish from McAtee that, too weak, just needs to hold the defender off and he's got a tap-in. Instead he let the defender fold him over and scuffs it wide with half the goal gaping. He'd have scored that last season.

He's completely reliant on having a target man like Taylor occupying centre halves for him so he has space to play in. Without that he's really ineffective unless we're counter attacking and have the defence back peddling.

Can't agree personally, he constantly looks a threat but our ineptness in the transfer market when it comes to getting a striker in has meant we've regularly played him out of position.

Granted, his finishing etc hasn't been fantastic, but he's quite clearly still our most technically gifted player.

I wonder what the end of game comments will be?

We went down to 10 men and the team gelled together

or

When we went down to 10 men they always had the extra man.

I hope it's not the latter as at 1 - 0 down the game is not dead and we can recover. Missing that chance just before half time to level it showed that there are and will be opportunities to score. It's never over till the final whistle.

Town are suffering exactly what we did to Conference sides last season.

We are being chased, harassed, outpassed, and Swindon's movements on both wings are faster than either of our full backs.

O' Neill looks lively as part of a losing 10 man side.

Missing Waterfall badly in the back 4 today with some poor positioning and lack of pace. Our clearances are 50% thump and hope with little chanc for the attacking players.

Just hoping now with some hard tackles that we don't go down to 9 men with bookings just starting to add up !

This shows how much Taylor contributed to holding up and accurate passing.

Subs look like we want to try to hold it at 3-0,

Ah  well, didn't even get to end this before it became 4-0.

They are huge yards faster then us !!!

This is how Dover fsns felt when we played them last year.

We have just run around chasing Swindon shadows today.

Beaten today by a far better team on the edge of the play offs !

When we have had possession, our passing has been poor quality.

We gloated at the Dover result - today was League 2 payback - being taught a severe lesson in running and passing at pace.

Terrible performance for me.

I usually try to stay balanced in assessment of performances and general stuff regards the Club but there’s no doubting that today has been truly awful.

Forget the score, we know that’s embarrassing but it’s more the performance that has been so disjointed and lacking in any type of quality whatsoever that upsets me.

I can suffer losses if we’ve played ok, haven’t looked inferior to the opposition and have crafted a few bits and pieces. Today we haven’t been able to string three passes together and that’s more hard to swallow than the score line.

We’ve focused so heavily on this striker but on todays showing I think the entire team would/could/should be replaced. No-one has come away with any credit for me.

Pains to be so critical but there was nothing in this game to even raise a smile.

I don’t agree with the Hurst Out calls and I will forever be a fan of the guy but I think this may be the game in which more fans start to turn their thoughts towards whether he can move us forward and from this point needs to bring opinion back to the positive rather than the negative.

Even being a huge PH fan it’s hard not to succumb to the idea that things are unravelling a little and he needs to really make a statement in the next few performances to alleviate the discontent that apparently seems to be growing amongst sections of fans.

Hopefully it’s simply just the bad performance, bad day and a bad batch of Coors that’s made the afternoon as sour as it is but I hope for PH, the players and more so the fans that we can get a run of decent performances going to banish this memory to the history books.

We should not be arguing like we are on a BBC HYS where you get MU fans insulting Liverpool fans and vice-versa.
I was not very confident about today. Swindon beat us with some ease at BP and, with the dreadful conditions, today was always going to be tough. I still want to be optimistic, though, because the downs of the last relegation season really did my head in. You can do without that when you are 75.
I can’t ever remember us getting a good result at Swindon. One defeat came in a season when we had 50 points in the Championship and were safe. It was the last match of the season with Andy Love in goal. 1-0 down after a minute and an abysmal display. The County Ground is not a happy hunting place for us. Move on.

Agreed- he has been poor and does need dropping. Also Swindon are decent, we lost one game against a team with likely a much higher budget some on here need to get some perspective. It was bad but not the end of the world. We can get the same 3 points if we beat Harrogate next week and we owe them one.

We keep saying it but with no focal point up front who can hold the ball up and allow us to move forward as a team we will continue to struggle. I have questioned the quality of our summer signings before and to me they are average or just below average L2 players. We lack creativity in midfield and on those occasions we do get forward fail to get sufficient numbers in the box.

On the plus side in the vast majority of matches we are highly committed and competitive but that’s really not enough. Gillingham and Colchester both appear to be making a number of signings and as a result changing their fortunes and hopefully we will do the same in the next two weeks as the current squad will not take us much higher than we sit now and indeed could take us significantly lower.

Let’s hope today is just a terrible day at the office and we bounce back next Saturday v Harrogate but lose that and we will all start getting a bit twitchy.

Re a few comments-
Perhaps the reason shorter threads when we won the last couple of games, they were so dire there wasn't a great deal to talk about.
Hunt was not good but what do you expect from a player that hasn't played for more than 10 mins in over 2 months.
Yes Swindon player for player were better than us re pace/skill/ability to pass the ball/and kicking the ball towards the goal.
O Neil looks decent we will know in about 3 games time if he is good enough, today is not the game to judge him on.
My thoughts generally.
Other than a couple of players we have little ability in the team other than charging around trying to get the ball back.
We are lightweight in midfield and up top (strength).
We lack anyone with pace over 5'10 and 10 stone sopping wet other than Efete (I exagerate but hope people get the point)
Amos off, knew we would not get back into it.
Hopefully better next week with 11 men for 90 mins plus.
Todays positives we didn't get any more red cards and the players did not give up
Crocombe showed what a good keeper he is.

Yeah, our squad is paper thin and lacks adequate replacements for key players when they get injured. Hurst needs to stop being so hesitant in the transfer market and pull the trigger on some new signings instead of leaving it to the last minute and signing inexperienced youngsters on loan (and if it's not his hesitancy preventing us from bringing in better quality players then he needs to be having a word with Stockwood and Pettit about our budget, because it's clearly not competitive enough regardless of what they say about it)
Posted by: immariner, January 14, 2023, 5:24pm; Reply: 200
It's an aberration. We were very much in the game at 1-0 before the sending off. After that an efficient, creative Swindon put us to the sword and we weren't tight enough. Very disappointing but it's not how we normally play. It's not the time for histrionics, move on to next week now

That depends what the bid was in the first place . No harm in trying to get a bargain but football is an expencive thing to be in and if you want to compete you have to pay the going rate . You never seem to hear we have gone back with a better bid etc. And end up with a young kid just out of nappies  on loan that knows nothing , Or the dregs from the bin outside poundland

Awful performance to add to a season of largely poor performances. Fortunately the bottom 3 are so bad that we're unlikely to be in real trouble, but if we play this badly in the next 5 games then we're bang in trouble. I suspect we'll grind out enough points from sheer endeavor to be safe, but this team is p1ss poor in quality.

Not many teams pay for players at this level and negotiations aren't done publicly like that. Except where clubs are trying to disrupt players at the higher levels.

But we clearly have a problem. We've heard for years that our budget is competitive, but the football never is. We must have an extra £500k to what was budgeted for this season and it won't be back next season because we've not even tried to have a go this season.

What does ‘cheap or kids mean’? What are the relative costs of the ‘cheap’ players you refer to? Please provide figures so we can compare our players to those of other teams.

Who has been ‘hoodwinked’? We were promoted and we’ve established ourselves in L2. We have shortcomings and some areas for development, but who doesn’t? What is it exactly that you think you’re automatically entitled to?

We got promoted last season. That's quite competitive.

After sleeping on it last night being hugely embarrassed I’ll put my thoughts now as I was absolutely livid at the time yesterday..

I don’t think we have enough quality and Hurst stayed too loyal to some players that got us promoted and it’s starting to show. I think that we really are missing strength and height in the team we don’t have any quality in the middle just 3 lads who are willing to run around and it’s not enough in this division. Holohan has been ultimately poor for his past 5/6 performances, Smith looks a totally different player…

What was the thinking behind giving a full debut to a young player on loan, with no EFL experience to speak of, at one of the leading teams in the division, who presumably doesn't even know his team mates names, how they play or anything about them?

How can the ultra cautious Hurst go from never using subs before the 70th minute, to throwing a youngster in the deep end like that?

Players come in every window and don't seem to hit the spot, and the same will happen this time. There will be a flurry of signings again now in the next 2 weeks but there seems precious little evidence he even knows what he wants.

What happened to the oft repeated line of they have got to be the right fit, or was that just a smokescreen to gloss over the fact we can't attract quality players that would improve us?

I don’t believe for a minute the argument that Hurst won’t pay the money and we know he’s put bids in for players to have them knocked back.

Because we don't have anyone else. Taylor looks past it and has been a country mile better than anybody else we've tried. McAtee has been garbage except the first sub appearance and that isn't his role anyway.

To be fair, the new lad looked decent in the first 10 minutes and probably caught the eye more than anybody else on our team. I wouldn't write him off yet, but it's a big ask expecting him to be the answer.

Not necessarily….. maybe he offered the money he had which is a different scenario.

I think it’s evident that we currently can’t attract the quality we aspire to. I’m not sure whether we’ll ever get to know if that’s down to fees, salaries, location, facilities, league position or we can convince the player but not the agent but I refuse to believe we’re not doing all we can.

Who says he isn't the right fit?

From what I gather, he was one of the better players for us. Bit of a baptism of fire for him, but i don't think it would have mattered  who we played. They were just clearly better than us.

We had Kiernan Orsi and Wearne on the bench. All of those know their team mates, the style of play and know what League 2 is all about, yet we threw an 18 year old (?) in.

The new lad may be better than those 3 subs but at least give him a chance to settle in.

It's the disparity between the normally ultra cautious and putting a young player straight in that makes me think something is amiss. Like he was trying to make a point.

So, you don’t like it when he doesn’t try something different, and you don’t like it when he does?

I have decided not to comment until today, but  all the concerns I had in August are being realised. We started the season off 3/4 light and this is the direct consequence of this. It was obvious to a 12 year old our strikers were not sufficient and those we brought in were merely stocking fillers from Aldi..
I stated when Messrs Petite and Stockwood took over I would not pass judgment until well into the season.I consider now is the time. They were welcome with an incredible amount of good will and hailed as rescuing the club. This manifested itself in a significant increase in attendances and season ticket sales. This was accompanied with an increase in the sales of merchandise. In conjunction with player sales and a decent cup run the club has generated a significant increase in income.
Let me remind the board the core function of their enterprise is to deliver entertaining  football, well you failing at delivering your core function. If you take for granted the goodwill that has been shown to you. will evaporate. Fine words in the Guardian  butter no parsnips, you need to invest in good quality players if you wish this project to succeed.

Except it doesn’t prove that. That’s just 2+2=5.

You know nothing about the ‘bid’ or why it was turned down. Could’ve been a fee. Might not. Could’ve been wages, or the player not wanting to move, or other clubs interested or countless other things.

Absolute boll0x, the board of a football club are not accountable for delivering entertainment. In our case the board are accountable for the betterment of the club something that overall if you look at their time at the helm they’ve delivered on.

Holy shot! Here's me thinking we got promoted last season but sounds like it didn't happen on here. Our extended season meant all LGE 2 clubs had a month head start on signing players before us. Now we're in January, it's never a great window but as long as we can improve our squad I'll be happy.
O' niell looks an upgrade on people and Simmonds, so so far so good.
We seem to have fans who just ignore the realities of signing players, are highly critical but offer no proof or alternative options.
I'd rather put my faith in a manager who's built 2 squads that have got us promoted than a bunch of miserable "supporters" who will never be happy and know sodomist all about our transfer dealings but pretend to.

Depends on what your definition of betterment is.We can have a healthy balance sheet, but is that fulfilling the function of a football club,it's not all about the bottom line.

To put that another way (sorry, I've got sick in my mouth saying this) Fenty kept a healthy balance sheet pretty much though his whole tenure but failed to invest into the "business" and 1878 have admitted they hadn't appreciated just how much was needed pumping in to sort the sh!t show left behind by JSF.
So without sorting out that out first, there was every chance we'd be a backwaters club with crap training facilities, a ground falling apart at the seams and absolutely no investment opportunities.
The budget for the squad will have been set at the beginning of the season, and I doubt that will have changed regardless of the extra income we have received over and above season ticket sales.
So in this window I'm not expecting any 'marquee' signings but what I will say is that I'm expecting a much improved budget for the 2023/2024 season and real showing of intent to challenge for the play offs.

I agree with all of that, but doesn't that point to a bigger issue, that we aren't capable of being financially stable and successful at this level? At least not with what we currently have.

Fenty invested minimal into everything and we just about broke even. That means if more was invested in other things then less would have been spent on the playing squad. And I don't think anybody on here would consider the last 20 years as a success.

So how do we stay self sufficient and have football success?

I agree and if you understood what JS & AP are all about you wouldn’t even default to taking about balance sheets and bottom lines, in fact in terms of 1878 you’re way off the mark. .

A board acts as an enabler for the stake holders and manager, they are not solely responsible for the entertainment on the pitch, that’s the managers job and if you think a manager tells his team to go out and entertain ahead of go out and win it just doesn’t happen that way.

Social media is also a modern day enabler as it enables people to have a pop at others, when we where relegated in the mid 70’s did you hold Paddy Hamilton, Peter Sheffield, Richard Middleton etc.. accountable for the lack of entertainment, I doubt it.

I do think to a degree 1878 will want a balance sheet with cash at the bank and positive reserves as that signals to other investors that it would be worth them partnering in and being part of it and at the very least their investment won’t go into the pockets of greedy creditors and their investment could be used for capex and infrastructure as well as boosting the transfer budget.

Also generally money sits on the balance sheet before it’s moved across  into a budget for a financial period so having a strong one will help when the manager needs more funds.

By making the club as a 'business' more investable, something Fenty never did, local businesses wanted nothing to do with GTFC, bar Youngs, who probably paid peanuts to be the official club sponsor.
We ain't going to become an overnight success story, that is for sure, but I can almost guarantee we'll be worth a darn site more than the 975k 1878 paid for what was a ramshackle football club in 10 years time.

With careful and planned recruitment. Identifying players that can be acquired within our means and can be improved to a standard that makes them a regular in the team and good enough to play at the level we operate at.

Then hopefully, every now and again, one or two of them improve to a degree that bigger clubs come calling and pay a fee for them. McAtee and Pollock for instance.

Doing this is a long term approach and needs the backroom staff and facilities we have previously lacked. Problem being that this takes time and fans are generally an impatient bunch who think we should just skip this step and lob a load of money at a ready made replacement.

Seems to me that the board are taking the long term, sustainable view, whereas the fans are becoming restless and want it now.

I'm cool with what they are doing, others not so much, but I figure we've waited this long to rise above mid table league 2, that I can wait s bit longer. After all, if you chuck money at a problem, it can go very wrong, very quickly. We've seen plenty of examples.

Hopefully, with more backroom staff, better training facilities and the new recruitment guy  on board, we can start to move in the right direction.

Reading some of  the comments about 1878 on here and Twitter .It does make you wonder why people invest time ,effort and funds into a football club .We are going through a dip in the league with 2 in 10 wins .But can anyone honestly say we have not had some success since they took over .No one expected us to even be in league 2 this quickly .So let's just pull together .I accept some may have concerns but let's put them aside and try to look forward positively .It will really make your life more enjoyable 😁
