Signed for Harrogate https://twitter.com/harrogatetown/status/1549786219357274113?s=21&t=RbLc4P6ngdpeUOP4zSPYmA
Good move for him and I hope it works out.

Great move but if he plays through a season without injury it will be a bit odd

Good luck to him (except during the obvious couple of games). I have to admit I'm surprised he's landed a League club, but maybe he'll be able to stay fit with them?
Posted by: Kris2, July 20, 2022, 5:13pm; Reply: 4
How did he manage to convince them to sign him? Hasn't proven anything for two seasons spending most of his time injured and had his best seasons in much lower leagues. If he suddenly starts every game for them we know he was lying to get released.  ;D

Also he always looks super young. He's 24 but looks like his mum still drives him to training in this picture.

Shocked he got a League 2 Club but probably just the right balance of enough potential and low-ish wages that’s it’s worth a chance. There’s definitely a League player in Max if he can stay fit.  Really hope he does well for them.

You could say the same about Scannell but add three seasons to that two yet we have given him another contract.

Scannell, proven footballer, clearly well respected and influential around the place, Wright, whilst decent stood out in excrement town sides and could never seemingly get fit…

Hurst did allude to the idea it might be more than a physical thing last season though…

I thought Max would develop into an excellent player, and good luck to him in getting a league club, but isn't this slightly odd?

Is he suddenly not going to be injured all the time now then? He was also ok injury-wise at the clubs he went on loan to, wasn't he? is it just a GTFC thing with him?

I said months ago I bet he goes somewhere else, plays every game and sold on at a profit which would be great for him but disappointing for us having spent so much time trying to get him fit.

Not sure how he’s managed that, I expected him to turn up at a conference North side (just due to injuries)

Happy for him, real shame it couldn’t work out with us

No one will know the situation better than Hurst, and he chose to release him despite the obvious talent the lad has. He clearly does not think him likely to withstand the rigours  of a season in L2.

It’s sad because Max has bags of talent.

He turned Harrogate down last time to re-sign for us, so pleased he has got the contract this time round.

I think he needed to get away and strike out on his own and I am sure he will be successful and injury free.

Best of luck to one of our own.

Wow didn't see that one coming, good luck to him and hope he has a long career still but my guess is he will pull up injured in his first game or two and then not be seen again until next year

Surprised he has got a league club i expected it to bottom end of NL or NLN maybe, just due to injuries. I suspect Harrogate are needing a gamble, which max undoubtedly is or are trying to balance a shrinking budget. He does have the ability to play at league level, but he's so often unfit.

However I am really pleased for him as an individual and hope he does well apart from the obvious games. Good luck Max.

Unless you mean it was specifically the Bkundell Park pitch that was causing his injury issues, I'm not sure what you mean by he needed to get away? If he'd have played more for us, he'd have probably been offered a new contract and happily accepted it. As it was, he didn't play much, wasn't offered a new contract and so had no choice but to go his own way?

Not surprised he’s got a league club as we all know on his day he’s dynamite. Whether he’ll manage his injuries he always seems to get will be interesting to see unfold, maybe it was psychological and a change of club might help him with that??

I guess it depends on the circumstances. If he was injured by a tackle then that’s fair enough.
Unfortunately for Max though, it’s generally just the stress that his body doesn’t seem to be able to take. If it’s the latter tonight I would think that’s very very sad news.

How high has Max Wright played? Scannell proved himself at the highest levels, Max had his best season playing for a pub team on loan. Guess Max won't get the same treatment from you though because he's a local boy. Know how obsessed some of you are with local young men lol.

Very little surprises me about this evening’s events where Max is concerned. He’s scored a great goal there, something he is easily capable of as a player with undoubted talent, but also a player with an incredible susceptibility to injury. I really hope for his sake that it is indeed only a knock and he goes on to enjoy a long spell of fitness.

There would definitely be something bittersweet if he stays fit for Harrogate and goes on to bag 15 for them in the league this season, but regardless I hope that he does it.

I met Max once, albeit briefly. It was in The Torch before the Halifax game at Wembley. A mate of mine knows him as his lad played with him on Town’s books for a while, and we got chatting about the fact the had just, days earlier, signed pro terms with Town. The lad was absolutely beaming with pride; lovely to see a young kid on the way to living his dreams - dreams I held onto far too long for someone with very limited footballing ability.

It would be absolutely galling for a lad with so much talent to miss out on a career not through application, but for reasons outside of his conscious control. I really hope he averts that fate and goes on to fulfil the career he deserves.

Is it me but am I the only one that actually feels a bit let down by Max Wright? Yes he’s talented but he was always injured and I get the impression that Paul Hurst felt that half of it was in his head. There are some players who would run through a brick wall for the team and there are others that won’t. I feel that Max is in the latter category.

I see where you are coming from. If someone has a cut some will shout out loud, get the ambulance, some will get an elastoplast and some will just get on with life.

Hurst made a few comments which suggested it wasn't just physical issues with Wright.  Now that can be interpreted as his attitude, which I highly doubt, or his mental approach.  Reading heavily between the lines here but I wonder if Wright became so focused on making it at Town that he put too much pressure on himself.

Of course there's the argument that it's full-time football he struggles with and the demands at Boston, Scarborough etc. are far less.  But he never seemed to have any injury issues when he was away from the club, just here.  Maybe more in hope than anything else but I genuinely hope he does go onto have a successful season with Harrogate, who knows there's nothing to say he couldn't end up back here in the future.

The decision to leave Town was taken out of his hands to a certain degree, but it may well be the best thing to happen for the lad because he had been on this cycle of getting fit-impressing-breaking down for a fair few years now.  That needed breaking, one way or another.

My dream of becoming a professional footballer were smashed by a foul mouthed, fat little fecker, who was the Scunny manager at the time in the mid 60's. think I was 16 at the time.

After attending Scunthorpe's Summer Football event for several weeks, I along with several others were invited to a trial by Scunthorpe.  The trial day was in the middle of the week that we were on holiday in Skegness, which is about 60 miles from here.  My dad drove to were the trial match was to take place, where this ft little manager bollocked me for not attending the Old Show Ground first.  Anyway, I was told to play Left Half, and scored a goal in the first half.  At HT every player was subbed except me, and I went on to play the full game.  I went straight to our car and told my Dad I wanted to go back to Skeggy, I never spoke to the manager because of the way he treated me, and went back to enjoy our holiday.  Just a little anecdote, do any of you guys have a similar story, would love to hear it.  UTM.

Trying to remember the managers name, was it Duckworth?  I believe it was about 1961/62.

Who is? The kids injury prone, that’s a fact. He didn’t get injured playing at a lower level with seemingly less pressure and stress…he’s played a friendly and gone off with what looks like an injury.

It’s excrement for the lad but having heard a manager imply it’s more than a physical thing, folk have connected some dots, they may not be in the right order but I’d hazard it’s a combination of in his head and the minute he feels a tweak, he’s done. It’s sad for the lad because he has bags of talent but there’s only so much clubs will take…

I don’t see anyone wishing him to fail, quite the opposite really but plenty on here being realistic. Let’s face it, if he wasn’t a local lad fans would’ve cried for him to be binned off months ago with his injury issues…

Maybe not injury prone but the injuries not managed well? Maybe previous managers/head operators didn’t listen to what he was telling them? Perhaps they thought they knew better and TOLD the physio team what was wrong instead of listening to what the player was telling them? Maybe a manager with connections to the south west played him when he wasn’t anywhere near to 100% fitness and this hampered him time and time again

absolutely, but as is always the case, theres a handful who think that if you have a different opinion to them, its " wishing him to fail"

i dont remember the same faux outrages when Scannell was called " a waste of time, a waste of wage"

Got intercourse all to do with where Max Wright or Scannell have played it's about their contribution to the club and both Wright and Scannell have not earnt their pay the past two seasons and I bet Scannell was on a hell of a lot more than Wright.

Arseholes was maybe taking it a bit far, but i think comments like the below that are aimed at a lad who just wanted to play football for his hometown club, but seems to be let down by injuries are a bit... heartless. The lad has opened up about how hard it has all been for him mentally, and i can only imagine how tough it was to get released, so people taking the urine or even suggesting he didn't want it enough just don't sit comfortably with me. Each to their own, though.

"Guess he'll play to get a contract but once he has it he's injured himself scoring.   ;D "

"Is it me but am I the only one that actually feels a bit let down by Max Wright? Yes he’s talented but he was always injured and I get the impression that Paul Hurst felt that half of it was in his head. There are some players who would run through a brick wall for the team and there are others that won’t. I feel that Max is in the latter category."

"That’s a bit unfair, he was already carrying an injury………he sprained his wrist signing the contract"

I don’t disagree with some of what you are saying, but come on, the spraining the wrist one was just funny!

It may just be psychological and the pressure of playing for his home town club. Some people handle pressure better than others. We've signed a few players over the years that couldn't hack it here and went back to somewhere they felt more comfortable.

I imagine that the Harrogate manager and coaching staff had a good look at him before they signed him and would almost definitely have made contact with PH regarding his issues. They felt confident enough to offer him a contract at EFL level and seeing as how Harrogate have risen to where they are in the pyramid, they seem to know what they are doing over there.

Some people, upon seeing a man struggling reach out a hand and help.
Others take the opportunity to kick him.

One way or another, I think we're all frustrated that a local lad didn't fulfil his obvious talent.

Unfortunately I wouldn’t say ‘all’. There’s at least one poster on here that never seems to have anything good to say about ‘local lads.  In fact mostly the opposite !!  But from my point of view, it’s frustrating because I do believe a fit Max is good enough for this level. I also believe that PH made the right decision in letting him go. And of course, it’s always good (imo) to see local lads come good. Even if it isn’t with GTFC.

Wow didn't see that one coming, good luck to him and hope he has a long career still but my guess is he will pull up injured in his first game or two and then not be seen again until next year

I should have put a few quid on part one, wonder if part 2 will be correct. So sad for the lad that I was talking tongue in cheek but the issues are there for all to see with him and now Harrogate possibly have to spend time nursing him back to fitness just to try and get him to show his potential

I've had the same thoughts- it could be the sheer desperation to do well for his hometown club that he is a fan of that has perversely worked against him here. Mental blocks etc effect people in different ways.

I have no problem people thinking he's injury prone or shouldn't have been re-signed by town, I would agree. But some of the comments do come across as revelling in his misfortune and as a bit shitty for a player who is a genuine fan and no doubt wanted to be  a success at town.

Don’t have much more to contribute to this thread, but just wanted to say it’s a shame to see posters being arseholes in this thread.

Taking the urine about and revelling in his injury record, and saying you feel let down by him? Bang out of order in my opinion.

Rubbish, I did not take the urine out of him but I did say I felt let down. He never played more than about a dozen games in 2 seasons plus sub appearances. When his own manager suggests that it’s probably in his head then as a paying customer I don’t see why he should be paid a wage for basically doing nothing. It wouldn’t be tolerated in a company so I see no reason why it should be tolerated at a football club. As much as he was an I s a very talented player he just had to be released. Like others I hope it works out for him but there was no way he could be offered a new contract at GTFC. Sad but a fact of life.

Whilst it was no surprise to me that Wright was let go I would just point out that Scannell has played 9 full games in the past 2 seasons and in 19/20 only one full game.

Yes true but as I understand it he was fit for most of not all this season but was never selected by Paul Hurst until right at the end of the season. However PH went at lengths to say his attitude during this time was exemplary and at no time did he complain and his influence in the dressing room was immense. Therefore it does suggest (well to me anyway) that his previous injuries were definitely physical and not in his head which is what PH intimated regarding Max Wright. PH is a realist with his feet firmly planted on the floor and the fact that he released Max Wright but kept on Scannell even though he is currently recovering from a serious injury, speaks volumes. #UTMM

I'm not having a go at Max, but it would be interesting to see a full list of the injuries Max had, the number of reoccurances and length of time out for each injury.

I think the one injury that Max picked up, that made everyone roll their eyes and shake their head was when he scored that goal when he dribbled from the half way line.......

.........but then got injured in the celebrations!

Only Max could do that!

Not really Patrick Bamford, for one, did the same thing last season when scoring an equaliser against Brentford. He had a similarly injury blighted season.

I’m not sure anyone thinks Max should have been offered a new deal but as others have mentioned a small minority (not aimed at WBJ) seem to revel in this unfortunate case in a way that some find distasteful.

I wish Max all the best

Anyone know what his injury was the other night? I really thought he’d drop to a National league north team or something. Wish him well obviously.

Having read my comments that I wrote last night, this morning I can understand some people think I’m enjoying the fact that Max is permanently injured. Therefore can I just clarify that that couldn’t be further from the truth. Yes I do feel let down by him because I do think that much of his injuries are in his head at Paul Hurst himself suggested. However I think he is a talented player and I am saddened at what has happened. As a result I think his position at GTFC was untenable unfortunately, and I genuinely wish him well.

I hope that clears any misunderstandings up. #UTM

How high has Max Wright played? Scannell proved himself at the highest levels, Max had his best season playing for a pub team on loan. Guess Max won't get the same treatment from you though because he's a local boy. Know how obsessed some of you are with local young men lol.

A pub team? We’re in the Conference North.

I hope Max tears you apart on Boxing Day 😂

Yeah desperately gutting for him but, as it says, can't be called surprising. Harrogate admitting already his signing was a gamble. Was it a 1 year deal?

Feel really really bad for Max, and hope Harrogate have got things in place for him.
His mental state must be well and truly shot.

Such a talented player on his day, and easily could of played higher than this if he didn't suffer the way he does.

It never rains, it pours. Poor bloke. Kind words from the Harrogate gaffer, to be fair.

"Max is going to be out for a few months due to a problem with his ankle that he sustained in a collision during our game against Barnsley," Weaver told the Harrogate Advertiser.

"It's a new injury. He's had a scan which has revealed the extent of the issue. It's so unlucky for the lad and a real blow for both him and for us.

"He has been a real breath of fresh air since he came in here and we feel for him. But we will look after him, we'll take care of him and get him back out there as soon as we can."

"I could talk about the situation from the team's perspective because obviously we want Max to be able to play, but actually what I'm really concerned about at this stage is the lad himself.

"He has had a few injuries, so it would be easy for him to start feeling sorry for himself, but mentally I know he is so strong and he won't let this setback get on top of him.

"That can happen to players who have a tough time with injuries, particularly younger lads, however I know how determined Max is to succeed and we are just looking forward to having him back."

Got to feel for the lad, he's got to be due some luck by now.

A small crumb of comfort is at least it didn't happen in one of the other pre season trial games he played. At least he's sorted contract wise and that will take some pressure off him.

Never known anything like it. Could just be disastrously bad luck or perhaps he should be studied by physiologists to try and figure out what it is about him that means he can't stand the rigours of professional football. Feel incredibly sorry for the lad because he has talent

For as long as I’ve supported Town there’s been people slagging off local players that have made the first team.
Usually saying “ so and so was miles better than him and didn’t make it , I was better than him but got injured , I never got on with the gaffer , he was an bottom kisser “ ect ect

I once read Kev Keegans autobiography and in it he states that everywhere he goes he gets people coming up to him saying that they could have made it .
He states that to make it you need the talent and the attitude and most of those that don’t make it are lacking one or the other
