Its always amazes me as to how many players dont live anywhere near the team they play for.

I recall seeing several tweets towards the end of last season from Town players mentioning car pools and car sharing.

Does anyone know the areas of the country that our players live?

I do know that Arnold and Amond shared a house on Park Street a few years back. It was near the hairdressers where Arnold cut my son's hair!

Always found it fascinating how much football fans seem to think about where players live. It probably makes little difference…unless you’re Martyn Butler…

If you were living in Doncaster or Sheffield or Nottingham or Leeds and was joining GTFC on a 1 or 2 year contract would you relocate yourself and your family for such a short contract? I don’t think I would.

It’s really none of our business. I wouldn’t want people discussing where I lived on a public forum so I doubt anyone at gtfc wants it shared either .

A year or 2 year contract could warrant a local quality rental property, even if they have their own place back home, which again could be on rental terms to.pay a mortgage !

Two of our family are forces based, but both have rental properties locally, which pay the mortgage for them, so they have somewhere to live if the worst happened and they needed to leave forces accommodation.

Some do relocate but very few do. If they have a young family, I wouldn't want to be their child moving school every year or 2. Lots of people in Grimsby travel to Scunthorpe, Hull, Sheffield or Leeds for work every day, it's the way of the world and football is no different.

If they turn up on time, work hard and try their best, I don't care where they live. Didn't Jolley have this wonderful idea of insisting players moved to the area which he soon dropped when he realised people didn't want to?

Doesn't matter where you live as long as your commute is doable and you can be in work on time. It's the same as any other job you take, lots of people who work in Sheffield don't live there. My brother actually commuted a lot of the time he went to university in Sheffield because it was easy on the train and he only had lectures a couple of times a week. He saved on accommodation costs and was able to stay connected to friends and family.

There are lots of reasons you wouldn't uproot if you are only signing on a year contract or 18 months, etc. Lots of footballers are married and have families to consider, they will often be in school and have friends from the local area. My cousins grew up in an RAF family and moved around their whole lives and had to keep leaving friends behind. It's a difficult burden to place on a family to move around, especially if you only spend a year or so at any club.

In today's world, I think a 1 - 1 1/2 hours commute is acceptable, Some time ago I read of a stockbroker who commuted from Bridlington to London every day, so it puts our player's journey's times into perspective.

a few of the places I commuted and did a full days work:
Castle Donington - 100 miles, 1 1/2 hours
Office relocated to Ferrybridge - 62 miles, under an hour
Relocated to Beeston (Nottingham) - 100 miles 2 hours (traffic on M1 got so much more busier than 10 years before)
Site assignment to Teesside - - 135 miles, 2 hours and a bit
Grimsby docks (finally after 22 years of asking) - 13 miles, 30 minutes (notice the difference between Ferrybridge and commuting to the town centre!)
Ramsgate several times - 250 miles, 4 hours
Several other places and three mental day trips to Aberdeen (FFS) 420 miles, 7 hours (day in lieu taken though!)

rather than me showing off, there's a point to this: I knew that none of these places were particularly permanent and even when based at the office I got sent (on loan, if you like) to other places - made no sense to me to relocate. Sometimes I'd stay in hotels (or one memorable time in Kegorth, a static caravan that became un-static with me in it one very icy January day and, only stopped by some people on the way home from the pub from sliding into the river Soar) but I figured that if I could mostly get home by 7pm and not leave much before 6 am I'd rather live in my own place. I suspect that the majority of the players feel the same way... and I don't blame them

1 to 1.5 hrs might well be fine for a footballer whose working day lasts 2 hours or so. However 1.5 hrs each side of a 9-5, no thanks.

I wasn't accusing him of planning to abduct one of them.

Josh Gowling is still based in the area but manages Hereford. And I seem to recall the BBC doing a piece on how Sean Dyche commuted from Northampton to Burnley during his entire time managing the club!

It's mad what some people are prepared to do. But if they can do it and not let it affect their performance, then good on them.

I think some of us still dream of this idea that players live locally so they can connect with the fans by visiting the docks, schools, etc. But I don't think you need to live in the area to connect with the fans.

I had no idea where Disley, Podge or any of our 15/16 side lived when they won promotion, and I have no idea where McAtee, Holohan, Waterfall etc live now. But the fans are connecting with the players, mainly through what they do on the pitch, and the new board are helping to build stronger links with our communities through initiatives run by the Trust.

I seem to recall some russian team that trained in the Moscow area and then flew about 200 miles or so to play their Home games in Siberia,

I'm sure Disley lived Market Rasen area when with us, and still does now I believe, does Hurst still live in Sheffield?

I wonder if this obsession with living in the town they play is a tribal thing?

It actually means excrement all. One has to remember that it is merely a job to them. Naturally, I do think that successful sides have a connection with the fans but that can happen regardless of where you’re from or where you live.

I can remember walking my dog around the spar shop there and Harry Willis popped out the flats behind the shop, I think Alan Buckley lived in Waltham or possibly still does.

I do an hour drive everyday and it’s no problem , I only work 7 hours a day .

These players probably only do 3-4 hours training 4 times a week so I’m sure it’s not too strenuous for them .
It’s probably a pain if they have a long away trip down south and still have a couple of hours added on top after snd before the coach gets back ect

Most players will be picked up on the way in that instance, I know not all players commute to the ground for away days

Going back to my OP I mentioned about several players car-sharing so maybe each one of the sharers only has to drive/commute once a week.

Buckley might even still live there. I remember after my grandad pointed the house out to me I always looked out the window when passing on the way to my uncle and aunt's house. Was very impressed when I finally caught a glimpse of Alan Buckley doing a bit of gardening on the front.

Yes I remember this, Harry Willis lived with Paul Reece behind waltham Tates.

I seem to recall another footballer living opposite the petrol station on barnoldby road, Waltham and Mr Buckley lived on a newer estate on the way to Toll bar school.

If I remember correctly, in Buckley's autobiography, he mentioned that when he first joined the club, he was sharing a caravan with Arthur Mann for a number of months!

He stayed in my Mams Guest House on Isaacs Hill , nearly all the new players stayed in those days .
I used to get tickets off Andy Tilson in the 88-89 season , I was gutted when he left
