Why do headphones have a left and right on them, I honestly have no idea?

The way they fit? Modern, wireless headphones have buttons on them which link to whoever side they’re placed. The sound quality?

It's the same as stereo speakers on a hifi in that some sounds come from the left and some from the right speaker when you are listening to music. It will have been mixed that way in the studio.
