Food available in the area?

Local’s highly recommend award-winning Hanbury’s Fish & Chip shop on Princes Street, which is around a 15-minute walk away from the ground. It doesn’t however sell haddock, instead serving cod, Cornish hake, lemon sole and plaice. There are other eateries in this area too.

I’ve never really seen this obsession with haddock over cod . I love a nice fat cod fillet. I’d be having the hake if I was going down to Torquay but I’m not .

Haddock's a much tastier fish in my eyes. It's all about personal opinion though.

Cod's a better option in a curry though. Good flavour absorber.

If you've got worms in your cod, you might want to change fish monger...

They're from the same genus and have the same parasites. I have no idea why haddock proliferates over cod around Gy/Lincs but it isn't because of "worms". I suspect it was for economic reasons and has simply stuck

Tastiest fish I've ever eaten? I caught some mackerel off a boat out of Whitby the other year and grilled them on the bone just a couple of hours later. Absolutely delicious with a sprinkling of salt and a squeeze of lemon. Biggest problem was getting rid of the fish guts afterwards. I wasn't foolish enough to attempt to fillet them without a proper knife.

Exactly, you won't improve on the Fish & Chip perfection we are able to buy in NEL so why bother, try something else, something local perhaps when you're away.

I guess the Grimbarians that look for Haddock and Chips when they are away from home are also the guys that holiday in Benidorm and go for a "Full English" everyday.

No haddock currently being sold by my very good chippie. The reason given is that stocks are in in short supply and the price has gone up. Customers (besides me and 1 or 2 others) will not pay the higher prices.

Maybe something to with the shortage of drivers, but see the different distinction with haddock.

Whenever I’m away from the area I like to go for a posh prawn sandwich, my “mate” Roy Keane suggested it.

My lad was working in Grimsby earlier this week and headed straight to Steels for a jumbo as soon as he arrived, I've obviously done something right in bringing him up!

I'd go for the hake if there's no haddock. Nice bit of fish, which you always get in Northern Spain

I worked as a fisherman for a long time and Dad was a fish merchant, so if I want to enjoy Lemon Sole I will, if you think there is something wrong in my choice and make a sarcastic comment then its your issue not mine!

Yep something about grilled fish that's fresh that just hits the spot. Tastiest fish I ever had was at a trout festival in Korea. They released a load of trout into a massive shallow swimming pool and let people in in groups of about a hundred and you had two minutes to catch a maximum of two with your bare hands. It was absolutely baltic, was in January and they made everyone change into matching shorts and t-shirts. I managed to be the first person to get one out and jumped out and bagged it up and handed it to my girlfriend at the time who was waiting at the side and then jumped back in and got another one straight away, bagged that up, handed it to her and jumped back in and helped some kids catch theirs. I was like some kind of genius trout catcher in this mad game. I've never been fishing in my life, but I'm convinced it was because I was born in Cleethorpes. The whole thing was really cruel on those trout now I look back on it. We took them to a fish monger on the site though who gutted them and then we took them back to the chalet we were staying at and grilled them and they were absolutely delicious.

If you like Korean food you ought to come to New Malden next time you’re in London. Sadly the dodgy ‘karaoke’ bar got pulled down though (can’t remember what the Korean word is).

Noraebang! And I live in London now mate, been to New Malden a few times. Definitely the best Korean food in London for sure. Most of the ones centrally aren't Korean owned in my experience.

It’s the most random thing isn’t it? An ordinary semi-detached suburb, which just happens to have the biggest Korean ex-pat population outside California. Read somewhere it’s as many as 10,000 people out of a population of 40,000 in the KT3 postcode area. Though it doesn’t seem as much as 25% when you’re out and about.

Yeah, I don't think I've ever heard why that's the case though, do you not know why there are so many Koreans there then either? Both the Koreans I work with live there.

The real sacrilege is gravy on fish and chips.

I heard that the ambassador lived there and the European HQ of Samsung used to be in NM and it was a convenient for the expats who worked there to live locally. Then whenever anyone transferred to London, say to work in the City, they would ask where to live and it sort of snowballed from there. It’s all since the late 80s I think. I first moved nearby in 1994 (the week Buckley moved to West Brom!) and it was noticeable and it certainly seems to have grown since then. From a couple of shops and a travel agent to it being several shops and loads of restaurants. And Korean signs outside churches.

Lots of kids from Korean families at the schools my kids went/go to (23 down to 15).

During the 2002 World Cup it went mental around the Fountain Pub (now demolished for flats).

One of my old clients was LG, based over in Weybridge right next to the Mercedes test track. That’s about half an hour away from New Malden I’d have thought - big old set up and I’d guess at least 50% of employees were Korean.

The canteen was fúcking amazing.

Interesting, cheers for that. Never really thought to even look it up or anything before you mentioning it being random, to be honest. Also, we all remember where we were and what we were doing when we found out Buckley had gone to WBA. I was 10 eating Coco Pops for breakfast and got very angry.

Apparently it’s something to do with the language barrier.

Great game too, which we won 2-3.

Another away trip with a chippy of note is Cheltenham. Simpson's - a 10 minute walk to the ground.

Best anecdote I heard about a Grimsby area chippy is when former Grimsby rector Michael Hunter took Irish flutist James Galway for a slap up jumbo haddock and chips at Steele's, following a recital at Grimsby Minster.

Galway enjoyed his fish supper so much that he beckoned a waitress over and said "Same again please!"

He polished the second serving off with no bother.

I'd never heard of DEYA until last week. A wine and craft beer shop where I live (half an hr from Cheltenham) sell them at £8.40 a pop (pint sized can) and I was amazed to hear they can't stock enough of them due to the demand.

No way I'm paying that for a can of beer when you can get a decent bottle of wine for the same price.

Will definitely try the tap room though!

£8.40 is insane! It must be some sort of 11% TIPA or something? Those kind of beers are a bit much for me, I have one and I need to smash half a pack of Rennies immediately after. Their normal (as in not double or triple) IPAs usually around the 5-6% mark are about a fiver a can which is still extortionate but you sometimes pay that for a flat pint of lager in a pub...these are the kind of things I say to myself to justify this frivolous kind of spending at least. But their standard IPAs have been superb all summer. I was drinking a lot of Pressure Drop last year, but DEYA have overtaken them as my faves. I'd definitely recommend you visiting the taproom if it's close to you though, it's just on an industrial park as a lot of brewery taprooms are so it's not a particularly nice setting but the beer is lovely. Or if you just see it on a tap out and about round your neck of the woods. I'd imagine you get a bit more of them in the pubs round there. Their flagship drink is probably an IPA called Steady Rolling Man, if you see that - treat yourself to one I say!

Do they measure the length of your hipster beard and check your tattoos before allowing admittance? The pricing of some of these craft beers rather extracts the urine at times.

The prices of draught craft beer in a pub down here in London is basically the same as a Peroni or something in a normal pub. The only way you'll drink beer cheaper in a pub is if you go to places like Spoons really. The cans, as mentioned above, are very expensive in comparison to cans of lager but if given the choice of a nice overpriced can of IPA in a park or at home or the same price for a flat lager in a dead pub that thinks it's a bistro because it serves sweet potatoes in a tin flower pot and a burger on a chopping board then I'll go for the one I prefer drinking all day. Personal choice and all that though, my friend.

Just the fact that some of the craft beer outfits charge an arm and a leg for their stuff - as in the mention of more than 8 quid for a pint in a can in a shop a few posts back. When you can buy a 750ml bottle of Tripel Karmeliet (World Beer of the Year award-winner) in Tesco for a fiver, over 8 quid for a smaller can is way too steep for me.

That said, I've spent 20 quid on a bottle of Deus from a shop before, but that is double-fermented for 9 months and has 11.5% ABV so you can understand the extra expense!

The beer shop in Bury St Edmunds has just got 25 bottles of my favourite in stock but I think I might have to limit it to two bottles and hang on to them for Town's promotion celebration.

I've never had any Westvleteren, although I've heard many a mention of it. I generally prefer the blondes, personally.

That's expensive due to supply and demand. I have a feeling that some of the craft beers are expensive because they are craft beers. Or perhaps I'm just being cynical?

Many craft beers are over rated. Tried three different offerings at Docks Beers bar in the fanzone last week and they all looked and tasted exactly the same to me. Very cold and gassy; much like drinking lager.

Far superior to the Molson crap in the other bars however.

I'm a fishmonger and can confirm fish prices are horrendous. Cod in particular is off the scale and I haven't bought any for two weeks. A year ago I'd pay 6-7 quid a kilo for fillets. Last week cod was 11.50 a kilo fillets. Haddock, 9.50, madness. Worrying times.
