I remember receiving a signed letter from him on my 18th birthday suggesting I vote Labour.

Here's the interview he held with Brian Clough and Don Revie:

RIP Austin

I can remember contacting Austin (around 18 years ago) about certain issues I had concerns with and within a few days I had a very decent reply from him. I didn’t agree with everything he’d said but he was kind and understood my concerns.

Rip. Whatever your political persuasion you could only admire his passion for what he did and the local area.

At one point he was on Look North that much I assumed he was a presenter!

Not far off. He was a journo who appeared on Calendar for 8 years.

Has to be one of the greatest interviews in the football world. I have watched that so many times over the years. Unbelievable emotion in that studio.

R.I.P Austin

What sort of person red crosses condolences and R.I.P sentiments, the mind boggles.

...One could type the obvious - when did...etc

Any road up, RIP to a really solid Labour MP can't say that about too many these days.

Great TV that interview, forgot that Clough signed Duncan McKenzie, a ridiculously talented player. How did Town miss out on even getting a short spell from him from school before he went on to bigger things? Remember the day of the Jim Dobbin win at Keegan's Newcastle he was presenting 606 and creaming himself over Town spoiling their chance of the record for consecutive wins.

GrimRob will have the data. Not sure, even with freedom of speech, I'd want someone who bothers to red cross posts wishing condolences, on my forum..

I remember McKenzie saying that the Town scouts thought he was too small.

RIP Austin.

Very good, old school Labour man. Not many remaining now, more's the pity.

I think he anonymity of red and green crosses should be removed so that, like with Facebook ‘likes’ you can click and see who has ticked. If you feel strongly enough about something to red or green tick it, you should be prepared to be identified for doing so.

Loved this comment from a reader BTL of The Times's obit on Austin Mitchell...

One of the joys of Labour Party conference back in the day was encountering Austin on the seafront at Brighton  or Blackpool, wearing an ill-fitting, off-the-peg  polyester suit, trousers hitched up by garish red braces, hair more tousled than ever by the sea breeze and eating fish and chips out of a paper bag.
He'd offer you a chip and cheerfully tell you that Foot/Kinnock/Smith/Blair didn't know what they were doing.
I remember the "controversial" tie well. He wore it until the stains from his fish and chips  had restored the (topless)  young lady's  modesty. I always called him 'Jane' (as in Austen) and he invariably laughed uproariouly at the joke.
RIP, comrade. I doubt you would be allowed anywhere near a TV studio in this day and age and Starmer would bounce you out of the party for your heretical views in a flash.
But you were one of a kind and politics needs more like you.

Certainly a big character whose bright quirky personality shone through .. but not a dig at him just a question what did he achieve in long stint for MP for great Grimsby ? In his days I wasn’t interested in politics to much so would be interested to know

Easy. The sort of person who is trying to elicit a response by using red crosses. Makes them feel good to annoy. Ignore.
