#GTFC Starting Xl: McKeown, Mills, Clarke, Collins, Dixon, Dembele, Rose, Summerfield, Jones, Hooper, Kelly.

Will that be Jones up the middle then? I hope so

Looks like it'll be 4-2-3-1 with Jones in the middle but i'd expect him to interchange with Dembele to counter Stevenage midfield/defence being able to pick them up.

We don't have the right players for the very direct game Slade is making us play. Every time we get possession in our own half it's hoofed up towards Hooper or Dembele and just comes straight back. We're more dangerous if we get the ball on the deck for Dembele to run on to.

1 year into our football league return... and were talking about sacking our third manager and signed a team of ageing journeymen or inexperienced players from a relegated side, and none of our strikers look like scoring more than 6 goals a year

Is grimsby town back in the football league or is the football league back in grimsby

This is all just brown tinted glasses talk coz were losing I accept that

Terrible to watch. I don't expect to see free flowing football from a Slade side but what I can't stand is players aimlessly hoofing balls forward when we are incapable of getting hold of anything up front. Players should be able to see if something isn't working and adapt accordingly - we had 40% possession in that half FFS. Summerfield has his critics but at least he tries to get hold of the ball and do the simple things right. That's the only way we are going to get back into this match. Vernon is also looking a big miss based on the first half.

Surely that then is RS's fault? They are both bloody awful, we know they are bloody awful, yet they still steal a wage here. We let Dis go to keep these utter shirt fillers. Blame is also partly at the feet of Hurst who signed York City failures on such contracts in the first place.

Michael Leary worked hard but was still dogshit. I'd crawl off the pitch if I could play for town, but I'd still be awful. It's simply not good enough to work hard, you need some skill and brains to match it. The last 14 months have been pretty horrible, when they should have been joyous.

Doesn't change that Bignot was clueless and out of his depth.
We would be no better off with him in charge.

Your mate has gone. Deal with it.

Err I'm watching the game and he's been our best player (admittedly that's not been hard today). The only one in a town shirt today who's actually tried to make things happen instead of aimlessly hoofing it onto the heads of their centre halves.

Didn't even attempt to dive for it, the shot was close to him and he just watched it go in. He was quick to moan at the defence for a goal hit from outside the area almost immediately though!

Time will tell on that one. Slade is arguably a better manager than Bignot but stability is definitely better than changing managers and players every 6 months. Can't defend Sam Jones today but he's bound to be frustrated when the manager who signs him is sacked and replaced by someone who wants him to play a completely different role.
Posted by: WetFlannel, August 19, 2017, 4:55pm; Reply: 122
I do think people did tend to go OTT regarding Bignot too, he didn't wow me but his recruitment was relatively solid and I don't doubt he could have developed into a solid League 2 manager. I guess we just don't have the time to develop. Not sad he's gone and don't want Slade sacked but people act like Bognor played Disley left back.

What is it with our last 3 managers who simply don't like playing a winger out were a winger should be.

You look at the football league and all the successful teams play wide players wide.

Bad day at the office from the sounds of things

Disappointed that we got off to a flyer at Chesterfield only to follow up that good start with two defeats

It's only early in the season though so just need to bounce back next week

Fail in that one and I might start to worry

Slade is having a bad couple of years , way too early to say anything but clearly 2 rotten performances and not impressed with some of the new signings. Will be happy with half way this season. even put money on cov today to win based on them looking very good, not do sure now. Very sorry for loyal away support who deserve much better utm

I'm not the pollock bringing up past managers. I was happy when your chum got the boot. I was also happy to give him chance when he started dicking about with formations to give him more time. Which he got and still looked clueless.

I'm certainly not convinced with Slade at the moment. I don't think he has the players to play Sladeball. If he can't get them to adapt or IMO change his game plan, then he has to go.
But he needs to be given till Xmas to try and sort it.

If he does go and the next guy doesn't have a good start, I won't be the pillock banging the drum about Slade.  Past managers and players have gone, for better or worse. Don't see MB proving us wrong at the moment !!

I'm off for a beer so with the mood I'm in I hopefully will stay off the board.

Yes but generally the problem starts in the Cnetre mid areas. the other players have at times shown promise were as we have looked woeful all the time in the middle with the relegation kids from york.
Not seen enough of rose to make a judgement on him yet.

Yeah don't disagree with the midfield point but it's hard when the back 4 don't give you the ball as they just want to pump it long. Either way I think it's clear that if Osborne and Clements where available Summerfield would  ot get a look in, not sure what to make of Rose yet either to be honest.

I think we're stuck with him unfortunately - Fenty was very cagey and refused to answer when questioned at the appointment press thingy how long the contract was, listening to it I think we're looking at a 2 or even 3 year contract, and I highly doubt we've got the money to pay him off.

He should never have been brought back.

2 bad performances and 2 bad results were started with a totally avoidable disasterous freekick goal.  In hindsight, this goal looks even worse for what has followed since.

3 bad performances in my book, we got the points at Chesterfield but were fortunate on the day to do so i think.
We have had three games now where we have isolated our striker, had minimum possession and surrendered large chunks of the pitch at will.

4-1-4-1 certainly hasnt made us a sustained attacking force and defending for long periods needs ultimate concentration and disicipline to prevent goals against. Something that clearly didnt happen today.

Posted by: Maringer, August 19, 2017, 6:33pm; Reply: 142
Don't forget that the 'goal' in question shouldn't have been awarded.

It sounds like the main problem is that we've played really poorly in the past two games. How much of that is down to the formation remains to be seen.

The most worrying part is the nature of the last two defeats the lack of ideas and movement is strikingly obvious. Teams know Dembele is our biggest threat but we make it easy for teams to work us out.

Why do we persist in keeping the other dangermen with pace on the bench?

The defence knock it about square then as they get closed down (there not the quickest) in foot and brain the aimless hoof up field results in losing possession.

Sorry but anyone who thinks Pearson was below Dixon or Clarke in terms of ability and pace are crazy.

We lack a midfield player with a hunger and brains in the Jon Nolan mould or even Disley at his best both players were ball winners WANTED the ball and were able to pick a pass to the front men.

Our set up is so slow and negative it invites teams to push up. This tactic can only work if you have pacy players on the flanks or up front to hit on the break but despite having these players on the bench ie Tombola and the new lad  we do not use them until it is to late?

Please prove me wrong but the defence looks slow and without ideas the midfield lack hunger and vision Upfront Jones as proved he can score goals but not sure Slade believes this and strikers work in pairs off each other not isolated on there own.

I am not a fan of Slade but c'mon, it's three games into the season. Yes, we were sh1te last week and sounded worse today but it's early days yet and we shouldn't be panicking. We have more points than massive Lincoln and only one less than Mansfield who signed about a hundred players.

There's obviously things to work on, starting tomorrow morning by the sound of it. If we are still getting dicked by average sides after about a dozen games, then i'll start to worry a bit.
Posted by: Mrs Doyle, August 19, 2017, 7:37pm; Reply: 149
Basic passing and movement at a decent pace would be a great start without looking at our possession stats over the last three games I doubt we have been pulling any trees up. One thing Hursts team did was his players usually put shifts in and worked for each other.

His starting line up looked wrong not long after the start but to be fair with injuries he has less options than he would have liked, he left it till half time and changed it with 2 subs and a move to 4-4-2, not sure what more he could do to be fair as too many player let themselves, him and us down with poor energy and a lack of character at 1 - 0 and onward. Maybe he should have put the young lad from Norwich on earlier and given McAlister some game time, would it have changed the score? not sure, but it may have been a good thing to do with the next game in mind.

In reality I doubt he tells the players to "hoof it up to the front lads" but that's what happened today once after about 10 mins they pressed us with a high line, we just did not have the savvy and possibly the ability to just get hold of the ball for a sustained period and settle into some rhythm.

I don't think Slade should be judged too much on the results season to date but even at this early stage he should be under the spotlight now going forward to see what improvement initially in performance and then hopefully results he can deliver.

I think you are being generous in saying we are average on todays performance. I doubt we will beat many teams playing as ineptly as that. If we don't snap out of it pretty quick there wont be many people at BP keeping the club afloat.

Any  GTFC fan who has seen berrett and summerfield over the past year or so knows them two starting in your midfield that they just ain't good enough.

You can dress it up as much as you want they ain't got the qualities to be in a starting 11 in midfield at a club looking to be top seven.

I'm not suggesting they should both start but one of them can at least pass the ball which we appeared to be sadly lacking yesterday.
