5 debuts for #gtfc. Mckeown Mills Collins Clarke Dixon Dembele Rose Berrett Kelly Jones Vernon

I think we all could have called that team. Personally can't wait for Clem to be back fit as I think he offers so much more than Berrett. Obviously RS is seeing something in him that we aren't. #UTM

I think Slade sees Berrett as the kind of player who will follow instructions and stay disciplined.  I like Clements but he is not as disciplined as Berrett. At this early stage with games against teams we expect to be up there, being organised and disciplined is important.

Clarke named as captain.

Subs are:

Kilip
Keeble
Osbourne
Davies
Summerfield
Bolarinwa
Cardwell.

Not sure why we've got 2 centre halves on the bench?

Overly defensive for me but I trust in Slade!

To be fair as per many posts recently I'm not sure he had much choice up front other than Vernon. I think Berret is still possibly 3rd in line if Clements and Osborne are available.

First time I've been to Chesterfield since moving from Saltergate and have to say if our new ground was like this I'd be more than happy - nimbys, council, JF etc sort your effing selves out!

Excellent break from Dembele as he skipped past challenge after challenge before slipping the ball through into the path of Sam Jones who tucked it away past the keeper.

Must have been signed by the mystery manager. You know the one who wasn't Hurst or Slade. Couldn't possibly have been that muppet Bignot who signed a load of passengers (according to some Fishy posters  ;) ).

That Dembele lad is a bit special. Rode a couple of lunging tackles. Left everyone else standing and slid a great pass through to Jones.

Quality half from Town. Every time they've lost the ball in our half we have broke at real pace. We should have 3. Mckeown has made a couple of good saves. Dembele is the real deal, his run for Jones goal was a thing of beauty.

Watching on I follow. Dembele is too good for this level, his assist for that second was Messi esque. They've threatened us at the other end, with the main issue being rose and berret not shielding the defence we'll enough, they seem so static at times. But overall we've been solid.

And for anyone who wants an honest, detailed and concise account of the game, their forum supplied it:
"Grimsby we're they're for the taking and will not be troubling the promotion places. They came to spoil and easily stole 3 points through our own poor defending. "

One game in and we've already been found out, no chance of promotion as the ball just fell into their net, almost by accident, on 3 occasions.

GET's summary was better, and a bit nearer to the truth perhaps.
"The Mariners soaked up pressure, defended well and took their chances today."

I'm sure the match I followed mention on numerous occasions that they dominated posession and at times were camped in our half, but ended in the words "..puts the ball high over the bar" or  "Umpteenth corner is cleared" or "Mckeown pushes the ball away/saves smartly" whereas their keeper didn't sound quite up to it at times.

Classic away performance, just hope the word on Dembele is good, seemed to be targetted very early on.
Posted by: Mariner93er, August 5, 2017, 5:18pm; Reply: 107
We were willing to allow them to put balls in the box and dealt with them well. When we got the ball in their half we looked dangerous too. I think we may need someone who's willing to sit in front of the back 4, as at times rose and berret were sliced through.

Yep, we've just won 3-1 at a promotion favourite and we're dropping the centre midfield who are clearly the scapegoats. Welcome to The Fishy

Just home, what a great away performance. I believe that Chesterfield was the better footballing team no doubt but we had more grit, determination and the right attitude. What do you say to your players at half-time when your 2-0 up against a team who are heavily tipped for promotion? Second half we soaked up the pressure excellently and was a great finish by Denniss to make it 2-1 but we
came straight back. Defenders looked solid all game, won a gritty away game which may prove absolutely vital come end of the season. Going home so happy UTFM

Is it possible they had 30 shots! As shown on BBC stats
Posted by: MarinerBen, August 5, 2017, 6:55pm; Reply: 116
A lot of the Chesterfield shots were long range efforts, with only a couple, or at most a handful of clear cut opportunities. I thought their solemn goal was a box sitter, where Dennis pivoted well and scored. The play leading up to his goal was just scrappy penalty area stuff.
Posted by: TonySmith, August 5, 2017, 7:06pm; Reply: 117
I really enjoyed watching the game live here in the U.S. I thought Town went with a game plan and it played out perfectly. The first half was pretty even, except that we got the 2 goals. We were under the cosh second half but they were restricted to very few clear cut chances thanks to lots of determined defending. I thought the decision to take out the wide forward players and tighten the midfield worked well to help see the game out. Hopefully one more striking option will be joining soon, and we should have a solid squad for the division. Three goals away from home on the opening day without a number 9 is definitely very encouraging. Everyone contributed to the win.

To me that shows they've done their research as McKeown has historically struggled with shots from range. Good tactic as far as I'm concerned but fortunately for us they were dire at long shots - and James was on top form to be fair!

How did Kelley not out that chance away at 0-0 - seemed easier to score! That Dennis seems like a right sharp object!! Glad we've put one over the! Outstanding start to the season!

Add another midfielder and a quality No9, (although in all fairness Berrett and Vernon seemed to perform very well) then i think we could do some real damage in this league!

That's where the goals are going to come from. All over the pitch by the look of it and 2 steady eddies at the back. It's the Slade way.

If that's "the Slade way" then I'm all for it...sounds perfect! I just wish his predecessor had just 10% of Slade's organisational skills and tactical understanding, then we might not have seen last season dwindle away to nothing.
