So a week to go before the start of the season, looking a the clubs that came down, the ones that came up and the others that where starting to build momentum I think,

Promoted

Mansfield, Carlisle, Luton and Swindon

Relegated

Newport and I hope Cheltenham

Town? - 14th

I have a feeling this season's league will be more competitive than last season

Don't know or care about other teams  ;D

BUT

On what we have at the moment a 12th position looms,

If we sign the right striker then play off at least.

Lots of 1-0 , 0-0 , 1-1  , bored fans . Dwindling crowds . Mid table if we are lucky .  Rs is extremely over rsted imo

Hard to tell without a full squad,, there are goals in the squad , but are there enough with out a main striker.. as we are just outside the play offs....

Exeter, Mansfield, Swindon Grimsby to go up.

Newport and Cheltenham to go down.

If I wasn't a Grimsby fan I'd be lumping alot of money on Exeter, they've lost 2 very key players but made over £3m in 2 years for them

Interesting call on Yeovil Abdul, any particular reason why?

Pin in the paper job ;)

To be honest, apart from Mansfield making some good signings and Luton signing Collins, I've no idea about anyone else enough even to have a mildly educated guess!

My prediction is that Town will do better than most of you think. :)

Promoted

Luton (champions), Mansfield, Lincoln

Relegated

Newport and Crawley

Town - 20th. Ageing defence, we'll miss Osbourne, won't score enough goals and will struggle badly.

If we manage to get at least one decent striker in I think we could finish top 8. If not lower half.

Mansfield, Lincoln, Luton and Chesterfield will do well

Newport and Cheltenham down

Mansfield Luton for automatic and Yeovil & Crawley for relegation.

No idea how Town will go as I fear a lack of goals at present

With the preface that Town don't have a complete squad yet (as probably applies to quite a few other clubs), I probably fancy us to finish roughly in line with what I presume our relative budget is in this league, ie somewhere between 12th - 18th.

I won't pretend to predict other places with such precision based on little more than guesswork as lots of others have done.

In a way, I'll be happy if we can keep out of a relegation campaign, but really, play off contention is a must for a club this size. Without signing the 2 or 3 quality players we currently lack, I can't see us having enough for a top six campaign.

Great piece in the Sunday Times today by Rod Liddle
"And league 2? Rehabilitation for those former habituees of the top division Luton, Coventry and Swindon perhaps, but challenged by a buoyant Mansfield Town. But how about April 14 2018 to decide relegation between Cheltenham and the irritating vegan hippies of FGR. Hopefully it will be a draw and they'll both go down. It's a county for rugby Gloucestershire"
Well said sir.

When did Rod Liddle become a football journalist?

He's not but he's a former liberal leftie who like most converts has to shout louder to demonstrate his adherence to the new cause. So the opportunity to have a dig at pony-tailed vegans is too good to miss for him.

He's been doing a sports column for years and it's always worth a read, as is most of his other stuff

I think this league is too tight to predict other than Mansfield being promoted. We saw last season that there's a lot to play for right up to nearly the end. We were getting hammered away from home but we were still in with a chance of the play offs.

I want us to go up. The best way to do that is to have a good back five, a settled system, pace and goals in the team plus a manager who is experienced enough to let the opposition do the worrying for a change. By Christmas we should know what's what. Remember last year, Exeter were bottom of the league in October/November but made the play offs, so it would be wise to be patient.

1-0 doesn't bother me as long as we get the 1. Entertainment is secondary to results in my book.

Which to be fair is what we got in Slade's second season. And but for missing out on one more 1-0 win (Orient away?) we'd have gone up and the history of the last 11 years could have been very different.

1) Mansfield  2) Luton 3) Coventry   PO) Lincoln

Town 10th... A season of fits and starts which ultimately ends in disappointment in terms of a fans perspective but a sensible relatively calm season could do us well.

23) Cheltenham 24) Newport (I still have no idea how they avoided the drop last year)
