I'm getting quite excited about going to the game tomorrow. Yeah, I know it's just a friendly, but it will be good to see the new signings and triallists and see what we might have to offer this coming season.

I'd guess a tenner Denni - I can't remember the last home friendly that wasn't?

I saw K Jackson mentioned in Barnsley's team news.

The away game was the last game of the season. We were already promoted but I think that they needed to get a result to secure the last spot.

Not exactly sure how many fans we took there but it was several thousand and loads of coaches. I remember there being loads of trouble and our coach returned with about 4 windows and a dozen people less than what it went with!

I was there that day. They had a striker called (Colin?) Walker who they discovered playing local football and worked as a dustman. I spent the early part of the game very loudly making the point that he looked like a dustman at which point he scored twice. After the second goal a yorkshire gentleman tapped me on the shoulder and quietly said "not bad for a f...king dustman is he"
Second half was total Roy of the Rovers

Well good job that morrocan afro guy got another run out today because I have to say the guy looks lost ...

Dembele is a special little player and town should do whatever they can to get him on a longer deal because you can see he has quality and could make this club some cash in the future.

Dixon the trialist left back looks a very tidy player too so far.

Jones was one on one with the keeper.

The Barnsley goal was a concern at the back but heyho let's iron out these mistakes while it doesn't cost us points.

Kamal couldn't tackle to save his life, gave a foul away almost every time. Looked tidied but didn't really use the ball well barring the through ball for Jones. No for me.

Dixon reminded me of a better version of Gregor Robertson. I'd sign him.

Robinson and Caldwell weren't on long but I liked what I saw. Would need a bit more time to decide on them.

Macca dieverything he had to do fine
Mills had a very good game
Clarke was a stand out defender
Collins steady as usual
Dixon, just OK for me no major errors and grew into the game
Kelly, I can't fathom him out went missing lots of times
Moroccan lad, good when he has time on the ball but not for me in league 2
Berrett was Berrett
Dembele such a talent pace, ball control and finishing. He is small but if he is not clogged to death he will be exciting
Jones, don't think he was fully fit and missed a sitter after a lovely move.
Vernon did his thing worked very hard on his own up top
Subs: lost track of them really but Tombola looked sharp, trilaist Robinson worked hard and scored but I personally prefer the look of Harry Cardwell seems to have a bit of everything and set up the winner.
Overall the shape was a bit confusing as players were tried in different positions however we gave a good account of ourselves against a Barnsley side that moved the ball well but lacked a cutting edge.

Tend to agree with this. Barnsley counter attacked with speed and it wasn't only Kamal who got caught out. If Town as a team have to deal with that sort of pace week in week out it will be a long season but it's League 2 so that is highly unlikely.

That seems like a good bit of common sense Barra.

The bloke has only just arrived, played a bit for Gillingham but not much. Played for us 48 hours ago and is expected to dominate midfield against a championship side. I doubt if he is anywhere near the fitness Slade would like and I doubt he is on the pace of English football yet. I have only seen him on video but maybe he has enough class to be worth a short contract.

Posted by: Swansea_Mariner, July 15, 2017, 4:16pm; Reply: 81
Yeah surely room for both as we are still light out wide with just three wingers. I'd be amazed if they would break the bank as both are youngish lads.
Posted by: AndyGTFC, July 15, 2017, 4:29pm; Reply: 82
Decent performance, had the better chances and contained a Championship side fairly well other than the goal.

Of the trialist lads, thought Dixon was solid enough without being anything spectacular. Kamal was good on the ball but did give away fouls too much, though gotta consider the players he was against. Robinson and Cardwell both showed promise but only enough room for one.
Posted by: RoboCod, July 15, 2017, 4:30pm; Reply: 83
Can't see how people are against Kamal because he's not spraying the ball around or scoring hat tricks...there's much more to his position than eye catching skill surely? Only have the Scunny game to go on and yes it was against a youthful opposotion but as soon as the ball was lost he was there, dropping in behind the back four.
When our fullbacks got the ball under pressure he was available, or taking an opposition player with him to make space. I'd like to see the Barnsley highlights to see if he managed a similar game, hopefully that would give some clue if he's up to the rough and tumble of League 2.
I reckon we'll make a grab for Robinson though.

Solid performance from Town,  I was sat next to promotion plaice and i must say he looked very fetching sporting his new fishy cap, and we both agreed that nobody really stood out. Whilst the trailists deserve more game time, i wouldn't at this stage be in a rush to sign any of them, and we definately need a quality goalscorer if we are going to be play-off material....for a championship side i thought Barnsley were pretty poor, and whilst i don't know how strong a side they put out, i can see why they are 2nd favourites to be relegated. These friendlies are difficult to assess with lack of fitness and the amount of subs used, however a wins a win against championship opposition, so onwards and upwards.

well here goes...apologies for the length but lots to comment on...

4-1-4-1 Formation again...looks like this might be the chosen set up. Noticeable that in possesion the full backs push up leaving the centre backs to do the defending with that sitting midfielder in front.
Positives - Having a midfielder sat deep during play shielding the back line helps defend.
Negatives - striker can get isolated and needs either a proper solid target man to lead and hold or a rapid striker to chase over the top....we currently have neither IMO. (although Robinson looks a decent compromise between the two).

Thought Barnsley dominated first 30 mins without troubling the back line that much as we were relatively 10 behind the ball and hard to breakdown but with Vernon very isolated we couldnt progress much, especially as he kept getting fed high balls to deal with.

We started to come out of our shells Dembele fired one wide from a half cleared corner,  Jones wasted a 1 v 1 which he should have buried and we were finally turning the Barnsley back line round. However a free kick in a promising position was spoon fed to their keeper who came caught, threw out and Barnsley on the counter raced up the pitch and scored, although a little fortunately....the ball pulled back was deflected onto the post off Dixon (?) ..Mckeown to me didnt react quick enough, paused, and their striker pounced.
Barnsley bossed posession but 1-0 felt a little harsh.

No changes at half time, Dembele grabbed an equaliser just after half time, stealing in behind the sleeping Barnsley back line to poke past the keeper, deserved a goal as looked most likely throughout.

Second half was more even i thought, lots of changes disrupting the flow but i thought the inroduction of Robinson gave us more impetus up top. Liked the look of him on Thursday against Scunthorpe Boys but reserved judgement, handled himself similarly today against Championship players. Uses his body and arms well to shield, decent control/dribble and a bit of pace.

We finished the game stronger and from a decent corner Cardwell lost his man, glanced a header goalward and Robinson was on hand to fire home the rebound from close range....almost happened again not long after, Cardwell again moving and losing in the box.

Mckeown - still not coming off his line, too slow to react to the rebound on their goal but made a couple of decent saves in open play.
Mills - Pretty much my man of the match today...solid at the back..got forward to support...looked comfortable.
Dixon - fairly solid but not spectacular. If the 4-1-4-1 is the way i would prefer someone with a bit more pace.
Clarke & Collins - gelled well, looked like they had played 100's of games together not a couple.
Kelly - one or two flashes of skill, didnt look particularly quick...reserve judgement as yet.
Berrett - just dont see the point, cant tackle, cant head, ineffective passing, poor touch, slow in mind and body.....but can hold his position !?!?
El Hadj - no ta. Looked out of it today. Said on Thursday that i didnt think he would be dynamic enough and i think that was the case today. Caught in possession, not strong enough and not a terrier type. Played one lovely ball to give Jones his chance but I would pass on him now.
Jones - looked a bit sluggish, wasted our best worked chance of the game.
Dembele - not afraid of a tackle, skillful, quick feet and decent awareness of whats around him. Definately a positive signing.
Vernon - didnt impress but unfortunately wasnt helped by the system, was largely isolated and fed balls at chin or above head height from the full backs. If and when we fed to his feet he is useful but needs the four behind him to get up quickly.

Robinson - despite not looking that big he holds the ball well, uses his body and limbs to shield and is skilful and likes to run at his defender.
Cardwell - played out on the left when he came on, like the look of him, decent movement, think we had two corners while he was on and he got his head onto both of them.
Davies - came on at left back. Solid defensively but wrong footed when in posession.
Tombola - seems to be developing his football brain, looks to be positive but not as headless.
Osbourne - much as last season. Looks good..
Yussuf, Summerfield and replacement right back didnt have time to effect too much.

Positive result, some decent performances, some less so.  Where does it leave us ??  Can we take both Robinson and Cardwell ? Can we hold out for a better left back ?  Will.. Clements, Mcallister, Venney, Clifton see any decent game time before the business starts at Chesterfield ?

If I was a Barnsley fan I'd be worried about the coming season based on that performance. On top but not wholly dominant against a central midfield of a triallist and Berrett, who is surely our third or fourth choice in that position? Can't bode well for them. Their forward line for the first hour was lacking in strength and the later players didn't add much to the team.

As for the triallists/new signings, Dixon looked solid to me so it doesn't surprise me that we're interested. Not as good as Andrew, probably, but hopefully still up to the job.

KAEH looked OK to me but we do have so many central midfielders on the books that I can't see us signing him. He is a good bit taller than our other midfielders so that is one extra thing on his side. Incidentally, the rumour I heard was that Clements is on his way, possibly to Crewe, as Slade doesn't rate him. I think he's done quite well but then I'm not the manager.

Cardwell showed a few good touches in his short time on the pitch (excellent flick header which led to the goal) and is certainly worth another look. A much bigger unit than any of our other attackers which gives us another option.

Robinson got stuck in and looks strong considering he's far from the biggest. Won lots of free-kicks which indicates he was causing defenders some real problems. This, despite the fact that I always shudder when I hear a player can play either out wide or up front - too many memories of Junior Mendes!

Do we have the budget to sign both of these players or do we need them both? Not sure, I have to say.

Dembele looks good prospect so I hope he can deal with the physicality of a more intense, competitive game, given his slight physique. Good to see him so delighted to score, despite the fact that the game was only a friendly.

Clarke looked OK but for his misjudgement with their goal. Do wonder if we'll struggle to deal with big, physical strikers, however, as he's smaller than Collins who isn't the biggest himself. Hopefully their experience will mean we can deal with pacy players well enough.

All in all, a decent performance and good result in a relatively low-key game. My main concerns were that Kelly was rather anonymous and Jones put in a bit of a half-arsed performance, albeit against a higher-division team.

And the total gate was about 1,900 or about, they obviously are not very good at maths in Barnsley.

Great following today ,above 50% of the attendance ,
I know that doesn't mean much in sense of actual numbers but it hopefully had a good sense of the enthusiasm of the fans on the new lads.

You think with 6 fingers they would be bale to count better ;)

I'm still trying to work out this anti- Berrett thing. I didn't go today but talking to someone who did, they said that Berrett and Kamal looked pretty good against a Championship midfield. Surely that bodes well for League 2 doesn't it if Berrett is our 'third or fourth choice'?

Just watched the highlights and it looked a good show. Barnsley didn't play well but they were not allowed to.

One or two things occurred to me - one was that the side wasn't weakened by the subs which is the sign of a decent quality squad. The trialists seemed to fit in easily enough to show what they can do which is the sign of the plans being simple and no overcomplicated tactics.

Another thing - we seem to be getting out of that bad habit of chopping people down on the edge of the box. A few times Barnsley got to good positions but we closed them down without diving in. Hope that is a deliberate change and we can keep to it.

I'd agree with this, he's been involved as much as anyone in pre season and was involved under slade at the end of the season. It looks like he is going to be involved.

Not anti-Berret as such. I just don't think he's nearly good enough. He's got an OK touch but is lacking pace, weak in the challenge and he rarely offers anything in a game. I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I've seen him have better than a below average game.

I'd love to be proven wrong but, on last season's evidence, not going to happen.

I was speaking with a Barnsley fan down the seafront this morning, he said that they have lost all their best players and this season, will have to start with the younger players. He said that he would not be surprised if they went down this season and that it was impossible to hold to their star player (forget who he said) has he wanted £27k a week.

Quite enjoyed that-and I thought all the trialists did well.
Whilst Al-Haj's hairdo draws the eye anyway, I thought he protected the back four pretty well, and not least because of his good eye for the first time pass to relieve the pressure, plus that fantastic dinked pass to set up Jones for the one-on-one, which he duly fluffed! That was the pass of the match for me! Yes, he did get caught in possession once or twice in tight situations, even though not in dangerous areas. One or two fouls close to the 18 yard line would probably have picked up a booking in a league game but some of the Barnsley players were mighty quick to get away at times and needed to be stopped-one way or another!. (It's called 'taking one for the team' I suppose).
Thought Dixon also did well-another Mr Reliable-and generally blocked the supply line from the right. Also got down the line in overlap mode a few times. He can also enact a decent throw-in! Pleased to hear RS seems willing to offer him a contract.
Whilst both Robinson and Cardwell only made brief appearances, I thought both looked very useful. Cardwell had the edge over Vernon for me, posing more of a physical threat, though I suppose Vernon was more isolated in that first half. I also thought Robinson was tenacious, held his balance and possession well against some pretty determined challenges, and worked well alongside Yussuf.

But no review would be complete without a mention of 'Streaky' Dembele-what a talent he is! He seemed to be everywhere that mattered. There are no lost causes for him-a real joy to watch! I just hope he can survive the 'cloggers' he'll come up against in L2.

His name seemed to be getting mentioned more than anyone else's by the commentary in the first half. He could get 3 assists and a hattrick and people would still moan about him. But he was written off before he'd even kicked a ball for us, along with Summerfield.

I think he was in danger of becoming another central midfielder played wide, like Paddy Mclaughlin, who also clearly isn't a winger.

I've seen people mention that we can't sign both Cardwell and Robinson and it can only be one or the other, why can't it be both? If Slade thinks it's worth offering them both deals then why can't he? Yes we'll have a few strikers but what's to say somebody like Yussuf won't depart? I know he looks a different player this pre season so maybe he's putting himself in the shop window.

Even if Yussuf doesn't depart and we sign Robinson and Cardwell, that would leave
Jones
Vernon
Asante
Yussuf
Cardwell
Robinson
Rose (possibly)

That is 6 or 7 strikers, remember Asante is unfortunately injury prone, Jones isn't even a striker and Robinson can play on the wing like he did in Holland and Yussuf could still depart, but even if he doesn't, we're going to get injuries and suspensions on top of Jones and Robinson possibly not playing up front and remember we can only sign players in January after the summer transfer window, unless we sign a free agent, so I think I would rather be safe than sorry as anything can happen.

I remember the begining of last year were people claiming Danny Andrew looked poor, bodes well for Dixon then.

Not by me. I've always been willing to give players a chance to prove themselves. Berrett has yet to do so to me. By far his best performance for us was the final game of last season when he did quite well. The fact that it took a whole season for me to see something from him is very telling. In my opinion, of course.

As it stands, we've got so many central midfielders on the books now that I think we'll be struggling this season if we don't have two of them more capable than Berrett.

Surely the fact that he played over 200 games in League 1 in central midfield suggests that he's more than capable of doing well in League 2 if played in his most effective position. To be honest, he didn't ever look fit last season - I suspect Slade will sort that out.

Slade will have us organised and efficient unlike some games last season,

If we can get the right couple of players in we will be in the play offs at least.

I'm not saying he's a world beater, I just don't see why it's necessary to constantly single him out for abuse.

He's got assists and goals from midfield in his locker, and takes an ok free kick/corner too. And he's a Grimsby Town player.
Posted by: NorthseaMariner, July 16, 2017, 11:40am; Reply: 106
Berrett does manage to appear in the box at the right time, but unfortunately he then smashes his shots over the top. If he can improve this, that would be a very good start for people to appreciate him.
Posted by: Mariner93er, July 16, 2017, 11:57am; Reply: 107
I think the problem is, he's a steady play. He's never going to do anything special. The question is, can we have such a player if we are aiming for promotion?
Posted by: TheRonRaffertyFanClub, July 16, 2017, 12:27pm; Reply: 108
Berrett is like Vernon, he's a players' player. He will never be a fans' favourite but he does a job and quite possibly he could be part of the team plan. Having said that, yesterday was definitely a game, where Slade wanted to see what certain players could do against tougher opposition before making his mind up  on final decisions about signing trialists or letting people go out on loan. Berrett may be one of those and yesterday his make or break.

Does he actually get that much abuse, I don't really rate him, but that's not abusing him.

That's the fishy though , if you don't rate a player then some on here like to use the  "abuse" chestnut.

I said 'this anti-Berrett thing' - I didn't accuse anyone of abusing him. I'd just like to see our best midfield playing in their best positions, if that means James Berrett gets a start then I hope everyone gets behind him and don't moan every time he misplaces a pass.

I think we tend to forget when we criticise players preseason is that they are still trying to build up match fitness as well as trying to impress,  things like late/poor tackles would probably be eradicated somewhat in three weeks time, same with Sam Jones one on one with the cobwebs off he would have scored nine times out of ten.
If I was Slade I would persevere with Al-Haj a little longer because I suspect at our level he will be an exciting player to have in the squad, If we have to sacrifice other not so skillful midfielders so be it.

Oh, I've never thrown any abuse the way of Berrett (or any other player, for that matter). I just don't think he's very good. Amazed he played quite a few games at League One level, truth be told, as he's always looked like a player who you would find at a struggling League Two side (as he was at York). Perhaps he's just lost his mojo in recent years?

Was reassured by those highlights. Great pass by Josh MkII to put Jones through. Vernon looks to be coming into his own as a latter-day Lump. Robinson did well to extend his Inspector Gadget leg out to get that rebound. And Dembele....well!
