Gone to Shrewsbury on a season long loan

Signed him, sat him on the bench and now wants him in the league above. Odd.

Very envious of the squad hursty is assembling. Deano, toto, Nolan, Lenny are a good spine. There is only one thing we can do. Get behind our brilliant club, get behind RS and wilko and hope we can join Shrewsbury in league one. UTM

I'd only have Henderson from that group. What a daft decision by him though. Hurst wouldn't even put him in over McKeown so what chance has he got in the league above? I expected him to go to a Champ club to be honest.

At least they've got a new chant for next season now.

"It's just like watching Grimsby"

Henderson aside I can't help but think that squad isn't good enough for league one.
Posted by: Mariner93er, July 10, 2017, 7:02pm; Reply: 12
I think they'll do ok. Not concede too many, be boring to watch but will get the job done. Strange thing is,  we seem to slate these players but all of them except Rodman did really well for us. Let's just forget about them and Shrewsbury and move on.

And this really surprises nobody, Hurst prefers to look at players he's already worked with and Dean did well in the games he played for us which were not under Hurst. Still it makes sense since he'd have knowledge of the player and probably still kept an eye on how well he did for us.

A lot of our former players are going to move on to other things, maybe better things and it's just how it goes. Wish him luck in what he's doing, think he's a talented lad with bags of confidence that has a bright future ahead of him. Didn't think he'd ever come here again anyway after that whole confusing mess where he was suddenly recalled.

Good move for Henderson and Shrews imo.

He proved ( to me at least) that he was above league two level. His next test is to develop further at the level above.

If/when he has had a good season there he may be ready to play at championship level but at this moment in time I couldnt have seen a championship club taking him and playing him regularly.

Good luck to him and the rest of the former Mariners all of who gave a lot for our club

I would take Collins, Osborne and Jones over those three outfield players myself. None of them shone too brightly in non league, so League 1 ?..........

Four other keepers on their books, Craig Macgillivray, Jayson Leutwiler, Callum Burton, Shaun Rowley, can not see Deano getting many games ?

Would you take them over Boyce, Summerfield and Yussuf though? You need a good squad and those three would enhance our squad greatly.

No they wouldn't. I'm glad Hurst has gone and he can sign every one of our ex players for all i care. The man lacks imagination.

What Ginny said.

How can it make any sense to have 5 keepers in your squad?!

Shrewsbury are heading for a struggle if the general calibre of players are our ex conference Mr averages. None of them are proven in L1, and, to be honest, I'm not sure if they are even proven in L2. Toto struggled at Hartlepool. LJL and Rodman did f••• all at Newport, and Nolan wasn't wanted by a club relegated to L2.

Hurst's thin book of football contacts is about as amusing as Mariner09's proven track record on sound player judgement.
😊

I saw Deano play for us a few times and he undoubtedly has talent and a future at a higher level.

But to be honest there's no jealousy from me. He wasn't free of fault during his handful of games for us, and made mistakes at Stevenage in particular (which you'd expect from a young keeper) - not to mention that howler for England.

I don't see him playing many games at Shrewsbury, unless Hurst has plans to use him from the very start, but I guess he's not going to get games at Manu so it makes sense he goes out on loan somewhere.

Just a little surprised he's gone to a team managed by someone who never played him.

Part of the Hurst defensive strategy?  Should be able to dominate the area and deal with crosses. ;)

Shrews fans spent most of last season moaning about Leutwiler, Dean had game time with us and the experience of a World Cup win - to be honest, he's at least L1 level now and capable of better, possibly nearly as good as Joe Hart was when he was at Shrewsbury.

I'm finding Hurst quite amusing with his obsession with our old players, is he trying to recreate his conference glory days, because Deano apart the rest are not L2 standard let alone L1,Rodman is poor,Toto is a car crash waiting to happen who will then blame the fans when criticized after getting torn a new a@sehole by the deadly Halifax attack,Nolan is ok(that's it) and LJL (I know he scored 20 in 1 season)but most the time cant hit a cows a@se with a banjo.Whats even funnier is that some on here want some of them back.i think some peoples memories are clouded by glorious wins at the likes of Alfreton, Eastleigh and Southport when the likes of LJL finally got one of his 99 shots on target.Maybe we should have a collection of old Town shirts with the Vanarama or Blue Square logo on and send them to the poor Shrews fans.Im sticking a tenner on them being relegated.
p.s Does he want to sign Summerfield PLEASE

The irony is that it was their performances against the Shrews in the F.A. Cup that almost certainly led to Hurst getting the job there. Perhaps he is repaying them by signing them on League 1 contracts. I doubt they will set that league on fire.

I don't mind any of the players, they all did well for us and although Rodman was the least successful in that he wasn't in the promoted squad, you could see technically he could play st a higher level. It's just the weirdness of Mr Hurst having the same transfer target list that he had three years ago when he was managing us in the conference.

This just shows the true calibre of Hurst and why in the long-term we'll be better without him.

His main signings have been his ex-players. He has signed players that struggled in the league below, and some who struggled 2 leagues below. He now has 5 keepers but again he'll have only had Deano's time here to rate him from (certainly not the Euro's!). His scouting ability seems to be non-existent!

Shrewsbury will be down this season and I've bet on it.

There was a meltdown on here about the number of central midfielders Bignot signed.

Imagine having five goalkeepers???
Posted by: Maringer, July 11, 2017, 8:56am; Reply: 35
Ought to be a good move for Henderson. I'd imagine he'll be aiming to be first choice and it is good to see young players from Premiershite clubs out on loan and getting games instead of just mouldering in the reserves.

I think the former GTFC players now at the Shrews are mostly capable of playing at that level, though probably only as part of a lower half team. I'd expect them to avoid the drop but would be surprised if they did much more, unless they have some other decent signings.

The weird obssession with Hurst continues among some who rarely seem happier than when decrying his abilities/plans/contacts/whatever. I've barely given him a second thought since he left and I really don't care much how the Shrews do this season, unless we end up facing them in the Cup again.

He's even doing a rubbish job of that seeing as only one of the five was with us then ;)

Great signing for Shrewsbury.

Happy to admit I am gutted he is not here for the season.

It is likely that Deano did not have a say in where he went,

Man Utd would have told him you are going to Shrewsbury,

They might not have known that the Shrews manager was the same Hurst that was at Grimsby (weight_lift)

Should have researched that better.

Oh well, as Maringer says, must stop this weird obsession with Hurst. Just glad he is gone and taken his one dimensional footy elsewhere.

Perhaps 'Mr One Dimension' will also now sign Vose, who has parted company with Scunthorpe.....
But enough....

Lots of managers take favourite players with them, Buckley to WBA for instance Groves, Rees, Agnew was it ? and then brought Groves back when he came back here.
Neil Warnock...Paddy Kenny, Michael Tongue, Michael Brown

Slade has signed some of his former known quantities as well.

Hurst obviously knows that the squad he took over was relegation material and needs some familiar faces around, that he knows exactly what he will get from them so he doesnt have to "coach" them into his ways. That way he can concentrate on the other players he has and maybe bring them on board quicker.
Say what you like about Toto he was part of the team that finished the season at Shrewsbury outside of the relegation zone when they looked doomed before he had arrived.
