Hurst has signed Nolan from Chesterfield on a 3year deal to boost the ex Grimsby contingent

Good steady signing alongside the shop and Toto.

Really liked the look of him in the conference. Probs could do a steady job in league 1

Seems the ones that jumped ship when PH was at town are now joining him again elsewere. seems odd they now want to play for him or is it we pay peanuts?

I expect being in League One probably helps.

Then when Buckley mark 2 returned we got half of WBA team following him.

Why is it Odd?

As much as its sour over the way it all ended, i don't think we will ever have a team with such high morale as we did with Hurst.

Can't keep bringing players in who's played under you before in non-league I think these signings hurst is making bite him on the bum no way will they push on to the playoffs

Actually, probably the best of his ex Grimsby signings so far - Nolan is a good footballer who's been playing at L1 level, although whether he's of a standard required for a play off chasing L1 club is arguable. We'll see.

Good signing for Hurst and the shrews.

Odd is how PH plans to challenge in L1 with a squad built around players that just about scrambled out of non league.

Any of the following could be true:

- Shrews will go down
- PH did a bad job with these players in non league
- these players were far higher quality than the rest of PH's non league squad
- L1 is same standard as non league

Or none of the above

Well he was hardly a world beater for us or Lincoln before us and didn't take L1 by storm for Chesterfield so I'm wondering how he's turned into the new Messi.

Answer? Not on your Nellie. Clay never 'ran' a game in his life. Functional - yes...influential? Not really. Nolan is a better, more influential footballer than Clay.

You probably misunderstood my point mate.

What i'm saying is that although they are different footballers, you put them in separately for ten matches each in midfield with the same player ie Craig Disley, you'll get the same yield of points. Both have strengths both have weaknesses which would cancel each other out in a points tally.

I, like OC, think that Jon Nolan is very overrated by some on here. He's got some massive flaws in his game. Dis and Clay bossed the midfield at Wembley to give Nolan the licence to do what he did not the other way around..

Nolan is miles better than Berrett, Summerfield, Comley and probably Disley and Clements. Involved in all 4/5 of our play off goal. Don't see how Disley and Clay could 'boss' the midfield without someone to actually do something with the ball. Ask a lot of people and they'll say Nolan was MOTM at Wembley.

Now, he couldn't really tackle and didn't track back. But people let Vose get away with that because he isn't that sort of player. Would have him back in the team in a heartbeat.

Think he has to play in a three to get the most out of him, we got found wanting in the 2nd half of that season sometimes because we treated Nolan as Clay. Clay and Disley together we able to maximise Nolan's effectiveness, hence our domination at Wembley and victory at Braintree. If played in a three here with McAllister and Osborne I think we'd be a really good side.

Maybe Fenty told him not to come back with any offer for our players because the answer will be f^^^^lk off

Exactly what I was thinking Pete. Shows how we've fallen when we're no longer a feeder club to WBA but 'the likes of....Shrewsbury and Hartlepool'.  :P

I spoke to a Chesterfield fan mid season and he said Nolan was the one bright light in a poor team.  A good signing for the Shrew's, I don't think we would have been promoted under Hurst without Nolan, so he is a player we owe much to.
Good luck to him, but let's hope PH takes Summerfield & Berrett too ;)

One of the most overrated players I've ever seen at BP, especially by some on the fishy.

His inclusion almost totally derailed our promotion season from the Naitonal League. He had a very good first touch which suckered in some on here to believe he was something he was not. Positionally he was often a liability, would look to close opponents down at the wrong time and would often switch off, allowing opponents to drift past him. Tbf, that wasn't his strength either but it's part of your job in a midfield two.

We saw the best of him when Monkhouse got injured and Hurst had to adjust his team and with Clay & Disley to make up for his lack of team play. They were his two best games for town and for that at least we should be grateful. Still, for me very overrated and I wouldn't be surprised to see Shrewsbury struggle next season, agian.

Seem the Chesterfield fans were as split about him..

"He was alright but still part of our p poor midfield from last season, can't say I'm too sorry to see him go. Get some fresh faces in."

Seems Mr Nolan is one of those players that divide opinion.

He almost derailed the season so much that he was involved in all three goals in the play off final.  ::)

Yeah he wasn't as good defensively as some other midfielders. That's football. It's about balance.

Clay and Disley weren't as good attacking (in possession) as Nolan. But football isn't just about defending so you balance a team with players of defending and attacking strengths.

For the stick Hurst took from many on here for being too defensive and cautious, there aren't half a lot of posters that now seem to think we'd have been better off with the defensively sound but one dimensional and predictable pairing of Disley and Clay.

Shrewsbury surely have to go down next season
