I go about 6 / 7 times a season, the Volksparkstadion is a cracking ground with good quality pop up bars in the general area. The concourses are bang on.
Anywhere you can get a ticket won't disappoint but we usually go in the lower tiers of the side stand (right of the Nordtribune).
The grounds a bit out the way and from City centre you need the S Bahn (S3) to Stellingen, follow the crowds through the tunnel (shades of Wolves away) where you get a free shuttle bus to the ground. They shift thousands in minutes, it's amazing how good they are.
HSV fans are very welcoming and friendly towards the British.
If you haven't done Hamburg you've missed a treat.
I'd definitely recommend a trip on the Elbe, a walk under the river via the tunnel, and a boat trip on the Alster lakes.
Fixtures out late June I believe.

I would recommend the Alte Fischmarkt as early as you can get there on a Sunday morning - its a really top experience!!

Bar Ritze is a good bar to go in. They have a boxing ring in the basement

They go to that on the film filth, that alone buys me 😎, not a strip bar is it?

Reeperbahn can be a bit of a cliché but saying that there are many good bars on the adjoining streets.
The waterfront at Landungsbrüken is good for food and drink.
You can't go wrong with a 6 euro daypass after 9am.
Covers all the U ans S Bahns plus busses.
Just go tube hopping.

Mate's a member of HSV supporters club so he's always able to buy up to four.
Away games are more difficult unless it's somewhere like Hertha Berlin with a massive stadium.
You always see people selling at Stellingen station on match days.
You could email or ring the club direct too.

Don't go to the Volksparkstadium (or whatever name this 'seen-one-seen-them-all-arena' is having nowadays - changing every other season)

If you come to Hamburg and want to experience REAL football experience, you should avoid Hamburg SV, but have to go to FC St. Pauli instead.

Eventhough it's 'only' second tier football, it's the much better all around package. And hey, you are used to fourth tier football, so believe you will have nothing to complain about the quality of football.

The advantages to go to a St. Pauli match:

- modern 30.000 people stadium (nearly always sold out)
- about 20.000 standing places
- the ground is right in the middle of the city (walking distance from the city centre (abt. 30 minutes) and the Reeperbahn area just around the corner
- ticket prices effordable (from EUR 12,50 (standing) upto EUR 43,00)
- plenty of pubs around the stadium for pre- and after-game 'entertainment'. (You will find nothing like this in Stellingen (HSV area))

Eventhough it is always sold out, I know the St. Pauli Fanladen (http://www.stpauli-fanladen.de/english/) is always holding some tickets for fans from abroad, which is often used by english fans.

If you get in contact with them now, pretty sure they will put you on the list for the dates you are planning to come, eventhough fixture list is not out yet.

So AVOID to go to Hamburg SV

- poor Bundesliga football (for years now)
- poor atmosphere
- and no matter what time of the year, I was always freezing in this stadium, because the wind crawls in from everywhere (... okay, you are used to this ...)

Have to see how fixtures pan out, im guessing that st. Pauli and Hamburg don't play on the same day? (if it's like here)

Also, don't st. Pauli have a reputation for being anachists?
