Macca talking about his contract renewals when Slade arrived, and even though he won 7 awards at the POTY awards, his wages offered went from £650 a week to £300 a week, making him one of the lowest paid pros, only just above the youth at the club.  Macca says that the last 2 years he played for the fans for very little money.

It's not a dig at Slade, more at Fenty from Macca and IMHO can be related to why a few players left last season, Arnold, Amond, Toto etc, and a warning to expect the worst with Pearson, Collins and Andrew.

What a way to treat a Grimsby legend

Contrast that contract with the one that Lennie offered him!

Excellent summary - spot on i,m,o. Collins (at 36?) should be the signing / player of the year but will this be recognised in terms of retaining him for next season?

That's the one thing that really shocked me and always stuck in my memory after reading that book.  Make me always wonder, when we lose players, about whats really happening that we don't know of behind the scenes.

Although most of Macca's book is fairly factual and not terribly controversial, this episode sticks out. To treat a genuine club legend like that is pretty horrendous as he is one man who brought headlines to Blundell Park for all the right reasons.

That's fenty for you it was a disgrace how McDermott was treated after being loyal to us for all those years !!!!

Macca, town legend. End of.

He's a Town legend without any doubt, but wasn't one of the reasons Fenty offered a smaller wage because Macca tried to get a move to Hull (only for them to sign Alton Thelwell at the last minute instead)?

It may be the case it was after nearly signed for Hull, but offering him that money afterwards smacks of vindictiveness IF you believe the two events are linked.

When Macca was doing various nights promoting the book he talked about this. He had been offered a deal by Town but had decided to move on to Hull with Peter Taylor, he was in a Hull hotel room overnight so not to have trouble getting to the signing/press conference.
As mentioned the Hull Board decided to go for Alton Thelwell as a younger option and Macca came 'home'

Fenty had significantly reduced the offer. Was that vindictiveness or sensible hard nosed business management? Depends on your view I guess but to some tells a tale which contributed to our ultimate demise into non league

Unless we know the budget at the time, and what players had signed in what positions, who was lined up to be signed and where there were gaps in the squad after all of this, I don't see how we can have an informed decision on what looks on the face of it to be a snub to Macca. It may have been that or it could have been about budgets, squad balance, planning for the future or any number of things.

Fantastic post. Finally someone actually using there brain and not jumping on the bandwagon because an EX town legend said so. Always two sides to a story.

Macca was very keen to let us know exactly how little he earned weekly at the end of his career with Town but wasn't so keen to let us know how many thousands a week he earned at the pinnacle of his career

I'm not disputing Macca nearly signed for Hull. It's just I'm giving Fenty the benefit of the doubt on the reason for only offering Macca £300 a week. Surely he wouldn't make a business decision out of vindictiveness?

His sly digs at Hurst in the mb press conference were very vindictive and look how that worked out . He is a conservative .

I'm surprised that Fenty didn't ask Macca to play for free if he loved the club that much  ;)

He is still employed in a well paid position by Grimsby Instituite so he still has a decent wage coming in.

Same. He is / was clearly very bitter about his lack of managerial opportunities after such a distinguished playing career.

He is the Curriculum manager for sport, I think that will be a highly paid position don't you think?

How do I know? I am also employed by the Grimsby Instituite Group

You are severely misinformed  (or lying) then Aaron. I am aware you work at GIG (as an apprentice).

I also work at Grimsby Institute as a Programme Leader and work with Macca every day.

Macca is not the Curriculum Manager at all...... not even close. He's the boys academy team coach!
