OK, so now Scaffa baffs has gone, where can you go for a proper swim in NE Lincs (or nearby) these days?

I'm not up for Alexandra Dock (or the sea). Yet.

I used to love Scaffa baths when I was a kid (towel whipping)  ;D we used to get the 3f from St Marks church (good old days!)

I suppose there is Cleethorpes leisure centre or the Oasis Gym has one (I think)

We used to bike up there from Clee cos there was no direct bus route. They used to have those plastic baskets to put your clothes in and had to hand them in at the desk where they gave you a metal tag with a safety pin. Pop upstairs to the caff for a hot chocolate and fail to speak to the girl you saw in the pool/realised she was older/younger/uglier than she looked in the pool.  ;)

Can't really get good exercise at Clps leisure centre. It's only about 20m and there's no lanes so you get people swimming across.

Where's Oasis Gym? Is it at one of the schools?

Thinking about going for a swim tomorrow in Clee leisure. Haven't been there since I was a kid, I've been put off by people saying how cold it is. I'm a girl private when it comes to swimming in cold water. Is it okay?

Oasis is on the corner of Orwell street KM near the fish dock road railway crossing - I think it's a membership style gym but it maybe worth a look, I don't think there are any swimming pools left in Grimsby now with regarding the length of Scaffa baths unfortunately mate.

My mrs was a regular at Scaffs Baffs but now goes to Grimsby Leisure Centre next to the Auditorum. But hates it.

Cheers mate. The pool looks nice but seems the size you get in hotels.

Terrible innit. Back in the 70s there was Cleethorpes Batho (must have been 60 or 70 metres), Scaffa (36 metres/40yards), Eleanor Street (25m?), plus others (Orwell St was probably a bit before), not including school pools and presumably one of those will go when they pull GY LC down). Now there's a couple of 15/20m fun pools.

Must be some sort of conspiracy to encourage open-water swimming (that's about the most positive spin possible).  :(

It's a crime there isn't a decent swimming pool in GY or Clee now. There was a time when you could (and i did) use the pool at Havelock school but i think only swim clubs can use it now it's an academy, which is another bugbear of mine, namely 'academies'.

I used to be a keen swimmer and have used all those mentioned at one time or another. The pools that remain are pathetic; you dive in one end (if you can find a clear space, devoid of people) and by the time you surface, you are almost at the other. Mate of mine goes to Clee leisure centre early in the morning before it gets too busy but said he won't go after about 8.30 or at weekends.

It certainly is. Was that a positive 'for now'? I remember reading a few years ago vague statements about 'the community using school facilities' in a document that proposed demolishing Scaffa Baffs. Are there any definite plans to replace the facilities?

There's also a big chunk about health and well-being being a NELC commitment. It's odd that swimming pools don't feature.

That's the gym I use Chris (although to look at me people might think not  ;) ), It is membership but you can pay for a day pass.  It's about 10m I think, ok for a quick dip before work or after a workout etc, but wouldn't use it otherwise. No more than 9 people allowed in at any one time, also there are classes and swimming lessons there as well.  Clee leisure is ok, but normally fairly busy and of course loads of kids messing about as it does waves. !!

Scaffa baffs was where I (and later on my son) learned to swim.  To shut it down without a suitable replacement in place is indeed a crime.  Another great move by a forward thinking council (NOT)

P.S. If anyone is thinking of using OASIS between 5pm and 9pm do not get distracted by the 'alternative' leisure facilities on offer just outside  ;) !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe You need to get in the gym more Si instead of using the "alternative leisure facilities" so your mates can then see you use the gym. ;)

Scaffa baths is were I learnt to dive bomb in the 70's we used to queue up and dive bomb off top board, we used to try and clear the dividing rope  ;D the life guards used to hate us Grange and Nunny lot.  ;D

The boys grammar school on Clee Rd had a swimming pool but it had been empty of water for years. I went past the other day and the whole block is being demolished. :-/ :o

Gaudeamus igitur
Iuvenes dum sumus etc etc
....
That perhaps explains why I
still can't swim sixty years later.
