On Friday night we're holding an event that's a bit different in the trust bar under the Findus Stand: Can You Hear The Grimsby Sing? An evening of words and music celebrating our football club, culture and community. You'll find more details on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/events/375625159453505/ Its a kind of follow up to the book We are Town.

So a competititon. No free tickets, but I'll buy a pint on the night to the person who names the most players who are mentioned in the pieces that will be performed - there are at least 70 players named. First person to name the player (and I do mean players, or at least player- manager) gets the point for that player. Bonus points for players who are the main subject of any particular piece.

You can only name five players in a post, and when you've posted once, you have to wait until two more people have posted before you can post again.

Does that make sense? Guess I'll find out when you start posting

Ok, I'll have a stab:

Phil Jevons
Wayne Burnett
Kevin Donovan
Paul Wilkinson
Keith Alexander
Posted by: CodAlmighty, December 5, 2016, 9:52pm; Reply: 2
Decent start - one bonus pointer and another scorer (Burnett should arguably be a bonus pointer himself). The other three are such good guesses I was a bit surprised they didn't score

(My post doesn't count as one of the ones that's got to happen until you post again, natch)

Remember its only the first person to name a player who gets a point for that player, so there's no point in repeating them in any case. You get at least one point for that selection

Decent guesses, based on a knowledge of the age of the promoter. But in fact I've only one piece in the show, and I only name Paul Futcher in it (still heart-stopping to think about him, isn't it?). Someone else mentions one of your names though, so you are well in the hunt.

Not at all- decent shout. You don't get anything for Phil Jevons and Wayne Burnett as Rich Mariner has already nabbed them. But you get two points for your other three.

Scope update:
Promotionplaice out in front with five correct names. RichMariner second with two names including one of the bonus ones.

Still more than 50 players unnamed, so plenty to play for. Remember you won't gain anything for naming a player someone else has already named.

Astounded to realise, that, to my knowledge, neither Joe Waters nor Paul Groves are featured in any of the pieces. Please do not try to bring rotten fruit to chuck at us on the night. Gordon Walker would have been a good guess if only we could persuade Phil Ball to fly in from Spain for the evening.

Latest scores:
Promotionplaice 10pts
arryarryarry 4pts
LincolnMariner56 4pts
RichMariner 3pts

Still 49 names to play for, so keep them coming. Promotionplaice hasn't got that pint yet.

A lot of the names you are suggesting that don't feature on the night bring home how much good writing about good players hasn't made the cut (also some good writing about not so good players).

It'll be a cracking night, and the youth benefit, so hopefully help us have some more good players to remember fondly in years to come.

By the by, if you are thinking of going on Friday, but haven't got a ticket yet, don't worry. You can pay on the door. If you have paid for a ticket but not received one, don't worry either. We'll have your name listed.

Score update - no big changes at the top: Promotion plaice still on 10, LincolnMariner56 up to 5, BarkerDan10 up to 4. Meza and moss_side_mariner have successfully joined the hunt with their first entries.

44 names still in play, including one bonus point scorer (but if you get him, it'll be a fluke- not a likely subject)

I'll be travelling on Friday, so I'll declare the winner based on entries made by 8.00AM on Friday morning.

Less than 23 hours to play, and the leaderboard is closing up. Promotionplaice still on 10, but BarkerDan10 and LincolnMariner56 are both up to 6. RichMariner and arryarryarry joint fourth, Badger57 and Meza joint sixth.

There are 39 players' names still to play for.

Lets ease up the restrictions on how often you can post. Either every hour or after one other person has posted an entry, whichever happens first. Still no more than five players per post though.

Dale Gordon was the ex-Norwich and Rangers player. Never played for Town.

As you say though, I think it's Dale Banton who's he's being confused with.

Sadly,  won't be there so buy yourself a stiff one and raise your glass to the Fabulous Futch for me!

Sorry to  be late on this. Still got internet problems at home. The official winner was Promotionplaice with 10 pts, followed by Badger57 (7); BarkerDan10 and LincolnMariner56 (6 each).

Someone asked for a list of all the players. I was working from this list: Amond, Andy Cook, Arnold, Betmead, Black, Bogle, Brace, Buck, Burnett, Charlie Craven, Childs, Clay, Clifton, Clive Mendonca, Cockerill, J, Cockerill, R, Craven, Crowe, male private Young, Disley, Dyson, Ford, Foster, Futcher, Ginger Hall, Gowling, Hill, Jackie Bestall, Jacobson, Jimmy Carmichael, , , Jimmy Dyson, Jobling, Joe Robson, Jones, Kelly, Kevin Drinkell, Knights, Lennell John-Lewis, Lewis (Cyril- not Jack, anyway), Lonsdale, Martin, McKeown, Mclean, Mike Lyons, Monkhouse, Moore, Moore, D, Moore, K, Neilson, Parkinson, Pat Glover, Pearson, Pennington, Phil Jevons, Pinault, Portwood, Rafferty, Rees, Richard Brodie, Smith, Tait, Taylor, Tees, Thomas, Thompson, Tim Coleman, Toto, Townsend, Tweedy, Wheelhouse, Widdrington, Wright.

As you see, its all a bit rough and ready, and as none of you claimed the pint anyway, the only loser was me (I put money behind the bar and told the barman to put it in the staff Xmas tips pot if no one claimed it, not having seen your posts saying you wouldn't be there) In fact, there was a change to the programme and Gordon Wilson read his poem about our Cup defeat to Coventry in 1973, which names several players you guessed but didn't score for. Richard Brodie was the bonus player no one claimed. Gordon, again, read a piece with the unlikely title "Loving Richard Brodie".

To those of you who were there, hope you enjoyed it. I had the impression everyone who was there (and numbers were a bit higher than we'd expected) was glad they were there. Anything you feel we could have done better, let me know, either on here or by DM if you prefer.
Posted by: psgmariner, December 13, 2016, 3:18pm; Reply: 78
I enjoyed it and was annoyed to have to leave early due to the deadly sick daughter / moaning wife combo.

My only feedback would be to have more of a stage and try and do something with the lights. It was very bright everywhere. I wonder if we the ugly audience should have been in darkness and the stage area lit up. Also, not sure if this was me being dumb, but I thought it started at 7pm so sat there for an hour waiting, sipping my soft drink. Gave me chance to have a chat with some new and old friends though I guess.

Personal highlights for me were (in no particular order) The Ballad of Phil Jevons, the Shim Sladey rap and being charged 30p for my drink (first time I have said keep the change in years).

It really was a good night and a refreshingly different sort of night for these ere parts.

Well done to those who organised it and contributed.

UTM.
