Portsmouth[edit]
Following a pre-season trial Davies signed a one-year deal with Portsmouth on 6 August 2015.[25] He scored his first goal for Portsmouth in a 6–0 win over York City on 24 November 2015.[26]

Grimsby Town[edit]
Signed a one year dea with Grimsby for the 2016/17 season after his release from Portsmouth

Do we really need another 35 year old midfield player?

This is a key area of the team and we need players with energy and stamina who can control the tempo of the game.

Wiki can be altered easily so I hope this is a wind up.

From what pompey fans say he still has plenty of energy and stamina - certainly being voted their player of the year suggests he'ss till got plenty in the tank

Looks like hes signing to me! Hurst said he wont rule him out. Dont know if it means anything but he does follow Grimsby on twitter and liked one of their tweets. His wife has done the same too. Hes also following one of them transfer rumour twitter accounts that have made some tweets about him.

Maybe im wrong and he could just be a town fan ;)

Question for the mods.

Does this mean there will be two separate threads entitled "his legs have gone " or will they be merged?

We deserve answers!

She posted this on May 15th: intense day of football for a grimsby girl married to a portsmouth player. 🙏 for @officialpompey & @officialgtfc  today #playoffs

Think that we should be thanking her if Ben Davies makes a move to play for us. Obviously an excellent signing.

She worked on death row cases and seems very politically aware . Can't imagine Rhys Browne will be spending too much time conversing with her at fenty a pre season bbq, judging by his interviews ;D 8)

Good write up on him here, they're clearly disappointed to be losing him so even at 35 it surely looks like a good signing should we pull it off.

"A considerable class above recent right backs...and Danny East". Sounds good then, I didn't think East was bad. Hope we sign him.

Wife and location could force the issue for him eventually - house prices down there would be high, so more chance of buying back up here, if he's coming to settle after ending his playing career.

If a 2 year contract doesn't work immediately, could a contract work with an option both ways dependent on appearances made during this season?

Looks to be a good pro with ability above his age group.

Only Hurst will know if this is a goer or not !

we've got to be in with a chance - at 35 he's hardly likely to move up a league and it seems they are intent on moving back to this neck of the woods. that leaves us, donny, mansfield and county

Would be excellent for us. Hursty's type of player, but if Pompey cannot offer him a suitable contract then it would be difficult for us to beat that I would have thought. Would be a gamble to offer 2 years for a 35 year old. Still you never know

Pompey only want to offer a year . Davies wants a 2 year deal though , would be a quality signing no comparison to Monkhouse . Plenty of juice left in the tank . Fox

Fingers crossed that Ben is going to join us - would be a great addition with bags of experience.  If we could get Marsh Brown from FGR to play in front of him and Vose on loan for the season,  things will look exciting.
I'm confident that PH will fill in the missing gaps.  Excited to see who he'll get to partner Omar.  UTM

Don't really know what to make of this, do we really need another 35 year old? Everyone is saying Dis won't play every week now so why presumably offer a ton of cash to another one as his legs could go at any time. On the other hand it would appear that he'd bring quality and experience so I wouldn't be disappointed if we didn't get him.

Love this at the bottom

"Ben was part of a dying breed, a consummate professional who always gave 100% and was recognized for doing so by his peers and the fans. There can only be a few players, at what used to be called the veteran stage of their career, with us for just twelve months, who made a bigger impact. A model of consistency even though he began to run 'dry' towards the end of the season....hardly surprising after 40+ games"

I've moved my Missus into a retirement home today, she wasn't very happy and wanted to know why at the age of 42. I explained I needed to make room for a couple of GTFC players moving to the area. So Ben Davis, his wife Leasey and Danny Andrew and his Columbian friend can move in any time they wish. ;)

I wouldn't think money would be the issue for Davies as much as the length of contract. This would be where his age comes into it. Players fitness can alter as the year goes on and of course with age injuries take more time to heal. The lad may be fit as a flea now but Hurst is ever cautious isn't he? He may want to offer Davies one year with an option clause, depending on how things go in that year.

RRFC, he signed Monkhouse who's legs were going and continually offers new deals despite his legs liable to go any minute. If Hursty reckons he's good enough then that's enough for me.

He's only doing what any manager worth his salt should do. Let the pen do the talking, otherwise keep shtum. I don't think he would have given any interviews at all if it hadn't been for the argy-bargy over Amond, and that's the way it should be. Don't encourage rumour, don't respond to rumour, just get the names on the dotted line. ;)

I guess you are a young man? Don't worry, you don't fall to bits when you reach 30, especially if you are a professional athlete who spends their life training and looking after themselves. And if a players legs do go (hate that expression) it doesn't happen in any given minute.

Clubs, even at our level are quite savvy when it comes to fitness levels, with monitoring and bleep tests and such, so i'm sure we won't be signing anyone who is about to expire in the centre circle mid match.
