Hearn over Connell, better team player who contributed more to the overall game whilst still being almost as prolific.

Post-Breakdown Neilson I assume!

Am i right in saying that all but one of that 16 were picked by Hurst , the one being Connell

Re: the above - no Disley? And Pond playing centre mid, wasn't he a central defender?

The team that played at Wembley got us up,

So that must be the best team. 8)

Pond played central midfield for us a few times and he was immense. Probably too harsh on Disley, I love the bloke but he isn't the same player now. He isn't as mobile and I suppose the current Disley is fresh in my mind where as my memory is probably selective over Pond. On reflection, I'm taking out of my bottom so I've changed my mind! Lol

In my expert opinion our best non-league XI is:

                  McKeown
Magnay // Pond // Pearson // Townsend
Arnold // Disley // Nolan // An in-form Neilson
    Connell mk1 // A fit Hearn

I don't very often contribute to threads like these but it's close season and I'm spectacularly bored.

McKeown

Tait Pond Gowling Townsend

Arnold Nolan Disley Neilson (but only because he was the best of a relatively poor crop of number 11s)

John-Lewis, Amond

I firmly believe that Podge could've reached 50 goals for the season with LJL providing him with the ammunition.

Subs:- Hearn, Pearson, Connell, Magnay and ??

Looking at the responses it appears the midfield virtually picks itself. Maybe one of the reasons why we were down there for six seasons?

Didn't Bogle get the same amount of assists this season as LJL did in his last one?

As a team, I'd probably go for that - don't really like loanees in a 'Best XI' so might replace Pond with Pearson but we haven't had a left back who compares with Townsend.

Macca
Tait Pond Gowling Townsend
Coulson Disley Nolan Arnold
Amond Bogle

Surprised to see so many including Scott Neilson. We've been such a better team since he left and look at the level he now plays at. No doubting his technique and ability on the ball but he rarely actually showed it with any end product.

Difficult or what?
I think combining the best forwards would be very tricky - eg: Amond and Connell in same starting XI wouldn't work as they are both too similar and a little lightweight
Systems would play a huge part as well - on the basis PH would be manager and he likes 4-4-2, and I am picking players in their prime and on their very best form

Macca
Tait, Pond Pearson Townsend
Coulson Disley Nolan Arnold
Hearn LJL

Subs: Gowling Toto Connell Amond Bogle (largely cos I can't think of another top notch midfielder or full back)...tough on Miller!

Yes he would make the team better,

The thing about selecting Strikers that have score 30+ goals in a season,

Is they would get in each others way if they played in the same team,
