Sutton_Mariner and I are pleased to announced we have started work on a documentary film for the football club. (Also posted this on Mariners Wall)

Bluelight Media has started production on a documentary film with the working title ‘Grimsby’s Greatest’.

‘Grimsby’s Greatest’ is a quest to reveal the greatest Grimsby Town team of all time. Through a mix of archive footage and talking heads, the show is a light-hearted yet somewhat heated debate over who should win a place on The Mariners dream team sheet.

To do this we need your help. We need to know your favourite player in every position and all will be revealed in this one off documentary.Voting can remain anonymous but if you wish to submit your name at the end, your name will appear in the credits.

We also aim to get a singer or band involved to create a soundtrack to it which we hope will become as iconic as some of of the town related songs of the past.

If you could be so kind to post your thoughts and greatest 11's on here or the Mariners Wall we would be ver greatful...

Cheers

Wrawbz

Coyne, McDermott, Croft, Futcher, Lever, Gilbert, Childs, Pouton, Cockerill, Mendonca, Birtles. Manager Buckley.

That for me are players in my time supporting Town. Need to make sure that credit is given to players from previous generations like Glover and Bestall etc.

I'd be happy to contribute but can I confirm is it my 'favourite' XI (which I interpret as being my favourite players from my time watching Town) or my 'greatest' XI (which I interpret as being an all-time XI, including Glover, etc.)?

The OP mentions both and I'd just like to clarify which it should be.

I always class an all-time XI as players that I have seen. If we are going to go for the greatest Town team of all time you may well just say the team that got to the 1936 FA Cup Semi-Final OR the squad (in those days not that many players were used) that finished 5th in Division One in 1935.

Posted by: forza ivano, February 1, 2014, 10:14am; Reply: 17
With you on that one les ,although I suspect that Ivanos quality would get him in there. Surely a team that finished fifth in div one has got to be included almost en masse?

If it's greatest players I've seen then I go for
beasant McDermott or laws Futch andy Todd Gary croft in defence
Midfield Gilbert groves waters ivano
Up front mendonca and wilkinson

That leaves a lot of other old faves so the ressies would be
coyne laws handyside kev Moore Agnew
Midfield oster Richard Hughes cunnington childs
Up front Martin Pringle and Kevin drinkell

My favourite team and most of you young un's  sadly will not be old enough to have seen  some of them play are,

                                                                                              Charlie Wright

John McDermott    Chris Nichol     Kevin  Moore     Gary  Croft

Tony Ford      Joe Waters              Micky  Speight          Bobby Cumming

                                                                                           Ron  Rafferty     Trevor  Whymark

I think I could name 3 or 4 teams,

We have had so many great players over the years.

Cant believe some players chosen were on loan strange decision I know beasant didnt concede and was immense he only played 10 games same as Andy Todd.  Maybe we could have the best of loan players.

Beasant
Townsend
Todd

We'll go for best you've seen matey, as Les mentioned, 'the greatest 11' would probably compromise mostly of players none of us have ever seen play.

I am picking the team of all the players I have seen and realised how biased it is towards the 97/98 season but hey thats my pick.

                        Coyne
Mcdermott    Lever    Croft    Gallimore
Donavon     Groves   Burnett  Bonetti
               Mendonca      Reddy

If we include managers I guess it is failry obvious from my picks: Alan Buckley

This is sooooooooooo hard.

I'm ruling out loan players and i personally feel they should not be included in anyone's side, despite Beasant and Todd being 2 of the best players i've seen in a Town shirt. After much thought my team would be :-

Batch
Mcdermott
Futcher
K.Moore
Croft
Ford
Waters
Groves
Cumming
Whymark
Drinkell

Could pick another side from Coyne, Wainman, Stone, Nicholl, Handyside, Wigginton, Lever, Agnew, Crombie, Brace, Cunnington, Cockerill Gilbert, Donavon, Pouton, Mendonca, Tees, Wilkinson, Lund etc etc..........................................

Keep thinking of more players, but will leave it there

1934-35 squad, a long time before any of us were born was Grimsby's Greatest.

Tweedy, Kelly, Jacobson, Hall, Betmead, Buck, Lewis, Bestall, Glover, Craven, Jennings, Vincent, Wright J, Hodgson, Dyson, Moralee, Burley Ben, Homles, Annabels

Special mention to the team that beat Japan 7-2 10 Aug 1971.

I'm not going to list a make up squad, the 34-35 squad would be my selection and trying to fit players from different generations would be to much of mismash due to playing styles for me.  Sid Wheelhouse, John Cockerill, John Mcdermott are players who are my legends.

As has been mentioned, I could have also made another 11 but after considering the options, these are my top 11 that I ever saw.
Honourable mentions go out to Cockerill (John...) Lever, Tillson, Donovan, O'Riordan, Alexander, Rees, Drinkell, Whymark etc etc etc etc....
Great project lads, best of luck.

Manager: Buckley. Natch.

An unusual 4-1-3-1 formation.

I wanted Livvo or Reddy in there but had to sacrifice strikers as we seem to have been blessed with quite a  few fantastic wingers / attacking midfielders. You have to pick Mendonca due to his goals and obvious quality but to be honest I never found him that exciting.

Evening all,

On June 6th we have the first shoot for the documentary. Interviewing a load of legends at the 98 reunion night which should give us a load of great insights - as you can imagine a few of those in the 98 team have made the cut, so there will certainly be lots to talk about on the night.

We have another 3 or 4 shoots after this one and are aiming for a wrap by mid August and and a final edit by mid September for release around October time.

There is more regular updates available on http://www.bluelightmediauk.com

We are trying to include as many of the players suggested as possible. The first voiceover draft contains 32 players. but ultimately the final XI are the most occurring players. Joe Waters has already kindly agreed to be involved in it.

That is fitting given that he appears on virtually everyone's list!

He is certainly my favourite Town player of all time, and I think many others think that too.

if you get the chance it would be great to let him know how admired he is by all lucky enough to see him play.

As it is 100 years since the first world war I feel a mention of fallen Mariners who died serving their country.

Sidney ‘Sid’ Wheelhouse (Town's captain)
Ralph Motson Thompson (Chairman' son)

Hopefully near Christmas, we are still very much working on it, we've both had other issues to contend with. Sorry for the wait.
