Just wondering people`s thoughts on the business of loanees over the years and how do you make the move work best for Town, parent club and player.

The last few years have seen a lot of loanees brought in but then you are left wondering why as whichever Manager has seldom played them. Then when they play they are disappointing and we probably have better players already at the Club? I would like to see us go more for young hungry players from higher up for example Henderson with the promise we will play them.We are currently crying out for a young hungry striker, pacy CB and a commanding keeper we probably don`t have the funds to buy them so the loan market would appear to be the best option.

Some stand out ones I remember doing well
Dean Henderson Made a Beasant like impact commanding the back line and very good distribution
Connor Townsend made a massive impact and eventually saw him get a move to a Club in League one
Martin Patterson Brought in with I think Logan and Pulis by AB all young players but dramatically improved a poor side and went on to good things.
John Oster Brought him in and he had the x factor to create chances and weighed in with some vital goals himself
Andy Todd Kept us up
Dave Beasant IMHO the best short term loan signing we ever had
Ivano Very memorable period for most Town fans

Jamie Devitt nearly single handedly kept us up during his first loan spell.

Our results dropped off dramatically when Nathan Pond left us after his loan spell during that season.

They’re the other two that spring to mind.

Not sure we need a new keeper. For me, Macca has been one of our best players this season despite a couple of mistakes recently. Would be very harsh. Agree about the other two though.

Wasn't a loanee though was he?

As for stand-outs... how about Steve Kabba?

Wayne Henderson and Barry Conlon. Without those 2 we'd have been relegated into non league. Can you imagine?

Stop it, I'm not sure I can take it anymore!!! I can't see us attracting the likes of the lads in bold for ages and it really winds me up...........but your right some "top top players" there. One thing they all had in common? they played without fear!

Luke Cornwall virtually single-handedly kept us up in 99/00. Think he came from Fulham. Years later I remember reading a "Where are they now?" article which said he'd left football and was selling ice cream at a tourist attraction in London.

Came back on loan (twice) in 02/03. The one game he and Kabba played together they were great; Oster scored but obviously we conceded a late equaliser! He also scored a belter to get us a point at home to Norwich. As soon as he left we were doomed.

The free kick at Derby on Boxing Day 2002 is another goal that sticks in the mind. I think everyone in the ground knew what he was going to do, apart from their keeper. He scored 2 that day I think with a young David Soames wrapping the 3-1 win up in stoppage time.

Im sure Ivano was on loan was it Genoa.  We wouldnt have paid off his image rights with fans help if we didnt see him in action first.  Even a free transfer would mean paying for his image rights....i think.

I know he fondly remembered his time at Town because my mate and I bumped into him in a kebab shop in Manchester city centre a couple of years ago, believe he said he was playing for a team north of the border (maybe Aberdeen?). Spoke of Sir Alan as if he were a god, which of course he was!

Didn't we get Andy Todd because he'd attempted to chin his manager (or another member of the coaching staff) and was suspended by his club?

Gave Dean Kiely a black eye. He broke Phil Brown's jaw at Bolton in 1999. Bloody wonderful player though.

On the grounds that there was more at stake and he was here longer Todd just gets my vote over Beasant.

Todd was a colossus. He looked as if he had all the time in the world and made defending look so easy. He was like Futch on steroids.

It makes watching so much harder now, remembering what we have had in the past.

Trevor Whymark. Signed in the early 80's from either Ipswich or Vancouver Whitecaps. Seem to remember him scoring something like 11 goals on 10 games whilst first on loan before signing a permenent contract

I don't think Whymark was ever on loan, I thought we signed him permanently from the start.

Quoted from Les Brechin

I don't think Whymark was ever on loan, I thought we signed him permanently from the start.

I thought the same or he would have been the first name on the loanee list. My favourite ever Town player.

You are right Les I do remember this one,

George Kerr signed him from Canada for £80,000 and said he had not seen him play there.

Pure class.

My daughter worked with his sister in the local school kitchen a few years later,

She asked me, " Have you heard of Trevor Whymark ?  "

The free kick at Derby on Boxing Day 2002 is another goal that sticks in the mind. I think everyone in the ground knew what he was going to do, apart from their keeper. He scored 2 that day I think with a young David Soames wrapping the 3-1 win up in stoppage time.

A great away day that we hadn`t won all Season away IIRC and we got there early and a copper said they were expecting 3-400 maximum from GY and think well over 2k turned up to create a wall of noise.

On the grounds that there was more at stake and he was here longer Todd just gets my vote over Beasant.

Hard one to call I went Beasant in so much as that 7 game run was probably my Town supporting highlight in almost 40 years.

Stop it, I'm not sure I can take it anymore!!! I can't see us attracting the likes of the lads in bold for ages and it really winds me up...........but your right some "top top players" there. One thing they all had in common? they played without fear!

The top 3 should all be possible mate and if not we as fans need to be told why not. I would love to see us take a calculated risk and approach a Chelsea/Man City and take 3 young players for a Season get them in our squad with a view to them being regular starters.

You could probably make a very good XI just based on loan signings actually. Henderson, Todd, Devitt, Townsend, Palmer, Pond

It was our 3rd away win that season. We'd won away at 2 current Premiership teams in Brighton and Stoke earlier.

If we're talking players on loan only then it's got to be Andy Todd or Dave Beasant but surely Super Clive has to go down as the best player we ever had on loan, for the impact he made after he signed.

What about Simon Francis. Can't say he really impressed me when he was here and never dreamt he'd go on to be the captain and defensive mainstay in a Premier League team.

Andy Todd is single handedly the best loanee we've ever had, absolutely no doubt in my eyes.

Totally agree. He almost singlehandedly turned that season around. Ewan Roberts will back me up on that.

He got a big ban for giving the "big un" to the Brighton fans on the last home game of the season at BP when we went down, he was bang average for us but I thought he did o.k. with that

Some cracking players mentioned so far. Also Ollie Palmer.?

A good enough player at the level we were at but only good enough for taking the tops off beer bottles for most the players that's been mentioned on this thread.

One of the best attacking loanees I’ve seen was Steve Kabba. Defensively Andy Todd takes some beating. Think we only managed to get him because he’d chinned the Derby (?) manager

We need to be bold in this market and try for a teenager like Dyson last season. I know he never worked out but any Prem or Championship side with an excess of players is worth scouring through. Years ago we came very close to getting Danny Welbeck on loan the players are out there we just need to find them and ask if we can borrow em.
