It concerns me that we spend 85 minutes of a game looking like we are totally unable to penetrate the opposition. I wouldn't mind so much if it was a style of play that worked but clearly it isn't. I recall his last tenure and how ugly our football was! It's not changed, that's why you should never go back!
You've just got to look at the divide between the fans and the dwindling home gates to see that this relationship is just not going to work! Lincoln at Home next week should be a sell out but I don't think we will be anywhere near!
Not just because of one result, not just because of the lack of desire in the team, but because the GTFC/Slade relationship just doesn't work. Awful style of play and no character whatsoever. We will be at the wrong end of league two with around 3500 on the Gate.
Be careful what you wish for eh??!! But what would we do for one of our previous bosses now.
In Slade, I DON'T trust!!

I'd settle for a previous Chairman.

| The wife was going away for a girly weekend. I jokingly remarked 'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football' 'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked She said 'Well you already know how to play football' |

You support a football team you have good & bad times. During my fifty plus years we probably have had more bad than good but when those good days, Spurs, Everton , Liverpool, West Ham, & good seasons come along it makes it all worthwhile.
We have had some poor years since the millenium but hopefully our turn will come again. I accept its not great at the minute but football can turn on small margins, should we win our two home games next week we will be very well placed. Lose to Lincoln, and I will get weeks of grief, but that goes with the territory and will not change my love of all things black & white.
We support town, we are inconsistent, we are not currently great to watch but every victory gives us an extra spring in our step and thats why I still attend most home matches. Lose, slumped shoulders, frown & grumpy most of the evening, but doubt that will ever change whatever league we are playing in.

Everyone knows my opinion of Slade and his football and how drunk I was with Fenty for bringing him back but hes here and we have to give him more time. IMO we should hang fire until the new year.
|
| In his three stints as Grimsby Town manager spanning over 10 years the club was never relegated and he also guided them to three promotions. Only 14 managers have reached 1,000 matches in charge of a Football League team by 1998 and Buckley is one of them. GOD |

Yeah - agree that swimming in a sea of mediocrity (League 2) is better than wallowing in a swamp of shite (non-league) but it's still not the Mediterranean!

Despite punching above our weight at times in the 80s and 90s if you look at our post war history we have flirted with Div 3 and 4 most of the time so it could be that expectation is a bit out of sync with where we are capable of sitting.

Sladeball ? Ffs were a L2 team with L2 players . As herts said we've spent most our post war history in the 3rd and 4th tier . We'll bounce around the divs having good and bad years , having good and bad managers , having good and bad chairmen long after were long gone . Our kids will be arguing about the same shi.te in years to come no doubt .

Can't say I'm a fan of this style of play, I never expected anything different from Slade which is a large part why I didn't want him back.
He can only work with what he is able to sign. The budget isn't enough for him to get the class necessary. Some of Slade's sides have played beautiful football. The Yeovil team that took on Nottingham Forest in a play off semi final played fantastic football, but one assumes they had the budget to get top notch players ( I suppose that is one of the reasons he went there.) Slade is a pragmatist and will play the style that suits the players we have got - which are average at best. I am still hopeful he will be able to get this team to gel and be in the top half, but unless we can get some new investment into the club we will be treading water.

I'm sorry even the guys I play football with on a monday night can string a set of passes on the deck together, you can't tell me pro footballers can't do it even at this level. I don't expect them to look like Barcelona, but I expect them to be able to pass the ball on the ground. Slades hoof ball doesn't work without a Reddy style striker to do the chasing up front and Slade failed to sign a Reddy style Striker all he brought it was cast offs and a young striker who may come good if we had the budget to develop him unfortunately he will probably be gone within a year or 2

If Slade was a one dimensional hoofball man WHY did he get Dembele and D.J. here ??? Two five foot odd play makers.
I would think he knows a lot more than people on here about football and systems I don't like harping on about Hurst but he always wanted John Lewis back here.
Every team at this level needs a good target man hence why Matt is being given a good run this side is still in it's infancy but we need more hunger to win first and second balls.
Not sure our defence is good enough though and that he is restricted with options is the real worry.

Size of the budget does not guarantee success, just ask both of the FGR fans or Dale Vince

I can pass a ball on the ground to my grandson but so what? We have never been tested in a competitive football league game have we? In any event, we do pass it on the ground a lot of the time but some games (like today from the reports) we seem to panic and get rid too quickly which is normal for average players. In my lifetime it is only during the Buckley era we HAD to play the ball on the floor - every other manager played a more pragmatic game - some long ball and some proper football. There have been many managers that played aimless hoof ball but I don't think Slade is one of them.

No it doesn't but if you look at the league pyramid by and large it generally follows that the biggest budgets hold sway, with the odd exception.

I'm beginning to think that Dembele is a bit one dimensional to be honest. For all that he has in terms of potential, there is clearly a reason that he was at the Nike Academy but without an end product, what have we got? I'd like to see DJ start in his place on Tuesday if I'm honest.

Yes the the big question is can he run in to space and can he pass it back?

We looked dogsh!t today. Watched the first 45 on Ifollow...how we escaped half time with 0-0 is a mystery...2 or 3 off the line clearances with McKeown flapping all over.....no passages of play whatsover and a compeletely absent midfield....Woolford, Berrett, Rose and Siriki AWOL...must admit Siriki had the odd glimpse but zero end product when he did. Newport were 2 or 3 times more up for it than we were..we hardly won a first ball let alone a second one....no physical presence, no quality in posession ...felt sorry for the back four who were under relentless pressure.
Simpering performance which p1sses me off more than anything...never in the game.

I think Dembele's strength (having only seen him one game may I add) is his initial trickery / speed in beating the opponent and for this reason, I would play him further up the field (and I think he would score a lot of goals) I. e. alongside (within 10 yards of) Jamille Matt, with Sam Jones just behind or indeed with a rotation of these 3 quick players. Town would then need to set up a back 5 (including 2 wing backs) with a midfield holding / prompting 2. I believe Town have the personnel to achieve this but in January 2018 could be improved. Over to you Russell?

There is nothing we can do at the moment about our PLIGHT -we are stuck with this squad until their contracts run out-we have a big squad so wont be able to go mad in the next transfer window. All we can do is hope Slade improves with his "tactics" and keep our fingers crossed but at the moment I feel it's our legs we will have to keep crossed. This team I'm afraid wouldn't be able to get near our promotion side in ability or commitment- let's hope we can learn from our errors because there have been mistakes aplenty

I know it's only early days but there are teams above us eg Accrington who will have similar if not smaller budgets than us. Slade has signed 11 players and if he wanted better players then maybe he should have reduced that number to 6 or 7 better quality players.

I tend to agree with your comment on bringing in less players but think this may have been due to original targets not joining, players like Matt not agreeing to sign until late in the window and a failure to get players out. A bif factor in Accrington's favour is their location & proximity to so many other football league clubs which allows them access to a lot of younger players released by larger clubs and more experienced players do not have to relocate. Our geoghraphical location has never helped player recruitment.

I hope they are Louth rather than watching plastic Prem teams because they are successful and heavily promoted

Just listened to his post match interview. . Apparently we just need to defend better, with more composure and a goalkeeper who deals better with balls into the box. Not do panic balls forward and when we are on top be more ruthless in the final third. No problem then defend well, pass the ball and put it in the net. Should be basics for pro footballers so nothing to worry about.

Let's not pretend that under Hurst we were playing beautiful football, what was his main tactic in the promotion season, hoof ball to Monkhouse.

He can only work with what he is able to sign. The budget isn't enough for him to get the class necessary. Some of Slade's sides have played beautiful football. The Yeovil team that took on Nottingham Forest in a play off semi final played fantastic football, but one assumes they had the budget to get top notch players.
And some of his teams play shiteball, when he signed for us I literally went into work and had a bunch of Cardiff fans falling off their seats pissing themselves with laughter. As for what he is able to sign Newport is a pretty shity city, with no football heritage and I can't imagine a big budget but they have managed to put together a team that after yesterday I have no doubt will finish above us.

He finished 11th and 8th with Cardiff though, despite their budget being cut massively. I know their fans think they're a massive club, but his appointment can't have been that loloriffic.

They lost more than 5000 on the gate during his tenure, check out the views on the bluebirds forums the vast majority couldn't stand him.

Vernon, Davies,Clarke,Collins,Woolford, McCallister all probably playing their last season in League football too great a proportion for one team to carry.

It's physically impossible to be a good footballer past the age of 30. Ask Gareth Barry among others.
Fans seem obsessed with players ages, in an age when players are about the fittest they have ever been.

Didn't say anything in reference to Slade saying that we have 6 players for whom this is probably the last team they will play league football, for we are carrying too many players who are past their peak and training and injuries must becoming an increasing struggle for them.

Well of course they are in the twilight of their careers. That's why players with Premier League and Championship experience are here to start with. Doesn't mean they are decrepit and incapable of doing a decent job at our level. We have had lots of players end their playing days here.

Birtles, Futcher, Lumpaldinho, Whittle etc etc etc.
Nothing wrong with signing experienced players over 30 if they're good enough. Our current over 30s are all OK, but not much better than that. Much like most of our younger players.

Agreed, who was it who said never give a player their last contract? We are absolutely shite, it is a minor miracle we have somehow amassed as many points as we have. Expect our luck to run out any time soon. Jouneyman players seeing out their days. When we go a goal down, we're done. No determination, no drive, very little ability to pass or receive a ball. No pace at the back, no regular goalscorer. No lessons learned, keep that map for the National league clubs. I for one, won't do that again.

Why include Dixon, a 30 year old defender? Should have several years left in him at the very least. How old was Macca when he retired?
Woolford is only 31 as well. Hardly Methuselah, is he?
Collins played well last season and was worth another year. Clarke isn't that old either, especially when centre backs tend to go on a bit longer than other outfield players. I wouldn't have kept Davies, however.
I suppose we do have an relatively 'old' defence in the grand scheme of things when Davies is playing, but it's not as ridiculous as some seem to think.

Slades gotta go the Footballs dreadfull to watch, thats why we go to watch football, not be bored to sleep by dross...
You often see people write that but there is no truth in it whatsoever. The better the team is doing and the higher up the league they are, the more people come. If we won the next ten games at BP, no matter how it was achieved, they'd be turning fans away. If we lost 10 games with entertaining 9 goal thrillers and total football, crowds would plummet! This isn't anything peculiar to Grimsby either, it's true at every team up and down the land!
