The last game I was at was the Coventry game, and after that I haven't bothered getting the days off work. Could those who know more about the games tell me a bit about who in your opinion is the best player, whos performing best/worst etc?

Imo, Macca has been excellent for the last few games, despite conceding 4 against mansfield- not his fault- he made a number of saves along with the crewe game and again on tuesday

Was at Accrington. New signings Matt and Woolford both look like very good signings.

Controversial I know, but is it fair to say Berrett has been amongst the most consistent for us so far? I've only made it to Coventry, so going off radio/posters in here...

He's certainly been a lot better this season than last. Unfortunately, unless he's at his very best, I don't think he offers enough to the team.

The noun I associate with him is 'lightweight'. He's not strong in possession, not strong in the tackle, not strong in the air. Tries his hardest, so no complaints about his efforts, but I still think we need better.

In the absence of McAllister, he's the best option in the holding midfield role.

Clements is far superior to Berrett but I'm not sure what's going on there.

Looking forward to a brighter future now Fenty has gone.

Better than the much maligned Summerfield?

I'd say Berrett is less capable in most areas than Summerfield (on his day), but, crucially, he's also less likely to pass the ball to an opposition player in a goalscoring position. Summerfield is player of limited abilities who thinks he's a bit better than he actually is and often gets caught out because of it.

For a holding midfielder, I'd probably have Rose ahead of Berrett as he's a lot stronger and a bit more athletic. Unfortunately, he's also a bit like Summerfield in that he overrates his own abilities on the ball.

What's Clifton like these days? Would he be able to cope with the physical demands of League Two midfield?

For me, McKeown and controversially Berrett have been our best players this season. Berrett looks so much better in his position, he keeps things ticking over very well and is no where near as profligate in possession as Rose. McKeown made 2 or 3 excellent saves at Chesterfield, Accrington and against Crewe, been faultless for all The goals if you ask me.

Nothing wrong with confidence if you have the ability to back it up. It becomes a problem when you're suffering from the Dunning-Kruger effect.

A problem commonplace amongst politicians and lower division footballers.

I'd have to say our best players so far this season have been Dembele and Berrett.

Berrett's been good with and without the ball. I've been massively surprised by him because he clearly had ability but seemed lacking in application. So far this season he's been hardworking, efficient and intelligent. As for the comparison to Clements, I'd say he looks a better player that Clements showed himself to be last season.

I think you can put Berretts improved performances down to being in a more natural position. God knows why Hurst paid a fee for him then stuck him on the wing.

Considering he's played in a few different positions and had a ban Sam Jones is off to a flyer again with the goals. Our next million pound player?

Macca seems to have put his issues from last season to bed and returned to good form which can only be good news.

Really? Don't see it myself.

For me, Clements is much stronger in the air, much stronger in the tackle, much better in front of goal and I wouldn't say there is much between them with the ball at their feet. Berrett has played a lot better this season than last, that's for sure, but I'd have a fit Clements in ahead of him every day of the week.

Different players for different positions. Slade has made it pretty clear that he prefers Berrett for the time being.

Berrett wins a lot of balls in the air for someone who isn't especially tall. Clements is the sort of player who needs lots of protection. The game tends to pass him by when we're losing but he does have a touch of class when on the ball and could pinch a goal.

For me, not one of our centre midfielders are good enough if we want to get out of this league. Full stop. Berrett and Summerfield are the very definition of average, and the writing was on the wall when they were retained and selected during the early games. I think Rose has some good attributes, and, on balance, is about our best CM, but we'll never get anywhere until we improve the quality in these positions. This is where we are most lacking IMO.

Osborne has promise and McAllister is perpetually injured so.....

There's been such an anti berrett campaign from the moment he was signed by hurst because he was seen as another York cast off that he's fighting a losing battle to gain the respect of the majority of town fans .
From what I've seen of him this season he's a different player since being given a run in the team in his best position and as it looks like sladey isn't likely to drop him I wouldn't be surprised to see him become one our most consistent performers this season and prove a lot of fans wrong

If it's not obvious, I'm a Berrett fan. I think he's fitter this year, he's playing in his natural position and you can see why he's played over 200 games in League 1. Equally, I can see why he isn't everyone's cup of tea, because he tends to move the ball quickly rather than spectacularly. As others have said, he's better in the air than most and has tackled more since he's played more central too.

Eh? If there's one thing you couldn't say about Berrett is that he's good in the air. I'll agree he's done more of the way of tackling this season but one thing he certainly ain't is good in the air.

1.  Paul Futchers signing was met with derision when he signed..How old ?!?? etc etc....however a few games in and it was clear what he was capable of and that he was a class act with plenty still to offer. Can we say the same for Berrett ?

2. second season in....two managers have thought he wasnt good enough to command a centre midfield spot....the third manager is at least playing him in what may be his natural position to give him a fighting chance of proving one way or the other.  Caldicott/ Hunt are just a couple of examples of players who didnt set the crowd alight at first and after difficult starts to Town careers won people over.

Personally he is not what i would want in the ideal centre mid but it maybe Slade has a wider vision for the system we are playing and see's JB as the answer. (Not sure on the question though )

When we play Sam Jones we seem to look a better team .

Playing Sam behind Matt is a much better option than the other strikers who I don't think are good enough to start .

When we play Sam Jones we seem to look a better team .

Playing Sam behind Matt is a much better option than the other strikers who I don't think are good enough to start .

This. Although maybe Asante is, but we'll probably never see him play more than about 73 minutes.

Also, I was wondering how many games Berrett had played in league 1 a few years ago. I can't find any mention of the figure anywhere

Over 200 for Huddersfield and Carlisle combined.

Sam Jones is probably our best player on balance and a threat from the correct position (ie,  not left mid).
I agree that he's at his best just off a main striker. Like Jonny I'm not sure if any of the others are of high enough quality to get us competitive yet. Give them a bit more time. Other than Dembele, and one or two others in little flashes, I'm not sure if we've seen too much of anything higher than decent quality.

We need to pose a greater threat and play more football to get best use out of these players. If we don't pass it a bit more, it'll be more about channel balls, crosses, enforced errors and set pieces. Fair enough to a point, but quite tedious to watch and a recipe for inconsistent lower mid table wallowing IMO. I don't think Slade has got the balance right yet, but let's see today......
