It's a question I often ask myself - would I still support the Mariners as fervently if we ever made it to the PL?

I'm going to be totally honest here but I felt I was closer to the club, and did more on a voluntary basis, when we were non-league. I used to write more, go to events more, get involved more because I felt we all needed to do more to help us out the mire.

Then last season, back in the FL, I actually went to fewer games. It wasn't a conscious decision to dial things down, but it made me wonder if I slacked because, in some ways, the job was done.

I never gave up on us - and I never will - but if we got to the PL it makes me think that a) I wouldn't be able to afford to go, and b) the atmosphere won't be anywhere near 'what it was in the good old days' because when you watch the Mariners lose at home to Braintree you at least know you're surrounded by the most ardent supporters and not the glory hunters who don't care for the soul of the game.

Easy to say from here, but in practice I doubt it's that easy just to walk away from your club.

Can't blame the player  if some one is prepared to pay him that.
But it was already at an obscene level and this would push it to a morally questionable level.
players  earn in a week what the pm & doctors etc ....you know jobs that are actually important.    Earn on a year.
They earn in a month more than the majority of the world's population earn their entire lives.
There's the knock on effect as well. It's not just the very best players.....theres squad players in the premier league earnings 6 figures a week and youth players on 30k or more.
The guy in the street can't relate to them anymore  I can't and quite frankly it's turning me off the game at the highest level.
Would much prefer watching town than paying  £££ to watch premier league or champions league
Indeed I sometimes take in non league games these days .
In fact I was at Sheffield fc last week for their friendly v Donny
Proper old non league ground  m but a club with a very proud history

It's not just about football, morally it's obscene that sort of money could support a small country, make life changing events to thousands. Yet you just know at some point hypocritically people like this will be asking people like us to donate money to some cause or other charitable event, It's gone way out of control even if he played an average of two games a week at 40 million a year FFS .

He's still young I hope he remembers to build his pension pot up lol.

I don't think we'll ever have to worry about becoming a PL team with plastic fans .

Excellent point. Helps salve their conscience.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.
