100%

All this "play offs as a minimum requirement" talk by Slade and Fenty isn't backed up by action in the transfer market.

Yep , just the amount of trialists we have had and the fact that we are now going into our first game with scott Vernon as our main striker sums it up.

That fenty statement of "we will show our intent in the transfer market" and "we felt our recruitment needs taking to the next level" seems silly now.

I honestly feel we were stronger this time last season under Paul Hurst and i don't say that easily.

Reality hitting home now folks?

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you give him an excuse for him to escape from the wife and kids for the weekend and drink lots of beer.

Wouldn't surprise me if a striker comes in on loan from the north east somewhere

At least Slade isn't going to be putting his "zero promotions" record in jeopardy.

IMO we need a quality striker to be serious promotion hopefuls (see earlier thread on recent owners of the Town No.9 shirt).

Slade probably has the contacts...but do we have the cash? Quality strikers (at whatever level) don't come cheap!

I sometimes wonder what sort of players fans of a club with 5000 gates playing in League 2 think we should be signing. Quality players will not be falling over themselves to sign for us.

When I say 'quality', I mean some guy (I might never have heard of) who can bang in 20 goals for us this season.

I accept Ronaldo & Messi won't be coming here.

I think the signings have been solid but unspectacular. I also think that's how we will be this season, which from what I saw last season, should be enough for play offs.

Have to agree Ginny,

To get better than our status merits we need;

- someone decent who maybe has connections or family in the area and wants to live locally
- a young upcoming loanee whose club believes we can help him develop
- a better than average player whose recently had time out injured and needs to prove himself again and we take the chance

If only it were that easy. Clubs of our size need to be looking at someone on their way up looking for the next step like Bogle or Jones, or a youngster from a higher division who their parent club want to sharpen up like Dyson. Then there are the players like Vernon who have been around the higher divisions and are getting on a bit. Ready made, 20 goal a season strikers in their prime are few and far between at our level.

I think the key is to have a few players who can score and spread the goals around, coupled with a mean defence and an organised team overall. I don't think we will blow teams away with attacking threat, not going on the Slade mk1 era anyway.

On the other hand, there may be the new Reddy about to join us.
