He was in the gym at Grimsby Leisure Centre yesterday, but I wasn't gonna ask him where he stood;  he doesn't know me, and I'd imagine he wouldn't have wanted to discuss it with anyone, he must be gutted.

But I agree, it's hardly a surprise, he's just not figured in Slade's plans.  Must be hard for a kid of that age, though, never easy being told you're not wanted.

Looked to have some ability to me on the few occasions I've seen him play, but does he have enough to overcome his diminutive stature? Quite possibly. However, he needs to be playing somewhere regularly to develop what he's got and that's clearly not going to happen with us so hopefully he get fixed up with a club quickly.

Still a good young player, he just hasn't made that step up to the required level. Good luck to the lad, he would be a great signing for Clee Town or even North Ferriby.

He's been in around the first team for a couple of seasons without really making his mark. Though i feel for the lad...never nice to be told you're not wanted.

Not a shock he hasnt been offered a deal but he has shown he has enough about him to get playing time somewhere. It's what he needs....game time....but will have to take a step or two down . Conference North perhaps (level 6)  Alfreton, Gainsboro or Ferriby.  Clee are level 8 ...they are a team on the rise and local but i think he can play higher.

I wish him luck and that he plays his way back up.

He always looked comfortable on the ball whenever he played (admittedly normally against poorer players in the FA Trophy or FA Cup Qualifying) but he was very diminutive and as Slade seems to want to be build an athletic and powerful side he just doesn't fit that mould sadly. I'd love to see our side full of Grimsby and Lincolnshire lads but that isn't possible because any decent talent is cherry picked for peanuts by the bigger clubs. There is a concerted effort in the upper hierarchy of football to destroy lower league football.

If he improves a lot, and some players develop later, then he can climb up the pyramid. Up to him to some degree.

The only way to know if he was good enough is a few games in a row in the first team, non of our youths seem to get this chance nowadays

I spoke to Ma few weeks ago and be mentioned he'd offered Josh a chance to go on trial to Alfreton should he not get a deal at Town so perhaps that's his most likely destination.

That would probably be his level for the time being but IMO has the talent to make that extra step up to the National League!

I warned him years ago about attending 'height watchers;' I said, "Your'e losing far too much at once son."

Being serious though as Mariner_09 said, Josh has looked comfortable on the ball when I have seen him play and he is a little athletic tiger, who puts in a real end to end shift and has good distribution..

I am sure if he sticks at it, he will make it somewhere as a footballer, perhaps as others say, Conference North or South level, but he does need a regular game to bring him on; and perhaps then he might play at a higher level.

Good luck Josh, I have enjoyed watching you play

Sorry but that is a very narrow minded view.

Just because young players haven't featured much in the first team, it does not mean they haven't been given a chance. Look, football professional coaches and managers get to see these kids in training, week in and week out. It is arguable that the competitiveness of what happens in training, in order to force your way into the managers reckoning, is actually a higher pressure environment than being given the first team shirt and being sent out onto Blundell Park on a matchday. Because you are amongst a whole host of other youth players, scholars and senior pro's, all of whom are vying for places. Including your usual first eleven and the fringe players. So it is here that you have got to really put in the work and show what you have to offer. Not to mention that you also play reserve team football and are in the shop window there all of the time for the coaches and manager to see what you have in your locker.

That gives ample opportunity for coaches and the manager to recognise if a young kid is demonstrating what it takes to step up and make it as a full time senior pro. They don't get it wrong very often. There aren't that many that bad calls are made on, and there aren't many out there that have been let go, only to then go on to have glittering careers elsewhere.

Venney was given loads of support from the club, given a pro contract, based on showing some early potential. That was a great decision by the club, in order that this kid could be given his chance and that he didn't slip through the net. From there on, it was up to him to show the coaches what he has got. Clearly what he has simply wasn't enough. If it was then he would be still with us and pushing for first team selection.

The sad fact is that any decent youngsters are snapped up by the bigger clubs. How many young lads have town actually brought through in the last 10 years? I know funding has been a problem, maybe now we are back in the league the youth team may be able to keep hold or even attract some good youngsters. I really hope so. I think with the right coaches and approach it could be a great way to generate some money for the club. I think it's fair to say all town fans are desperate to see a young local lad make it.

Has to come from the player though. Of course we would like to see a local lad come good. The club would too, because they stand to benefit massively from bringing through a great kid capable of going on to better things. Guys, we don't release these kids for no reason. We nurture the talent and give scholarships and initial contracts to those that look like they might have what it takes. Thereafter it is up to them to step up and demonstrate that they are going to make it in the world of professional football.

Last real homegrown player that we brought through the youth system, that made it as a pro for us, then profited from? John Oster
