GTFC Official Site -

If the Mariners progress through to Round 2 of the competition, we will face Scunthorpe United on Thursday night at Blundell Park.

With the Iron currently in Austria, it would be a young United side which would face the Round 1 winners.

When Leeds trainer Les Cocker was once told Norman Hunter had broken a leg, he asked: “Whose is it?”

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

Heading for penalties?

If the scores are still level at 90 minutes, we’ll be going straight to penalties this evening without any extra time

Time to bring on Mckeown maybe !

I imagine it will also be a young Town side as we Barnsley the following evening.

well just back and feel like we never really got going until Dembele came on,the first half was sluggish especially down the right where Osbourne had a poor game,Rose seems to have a lot of energy buzzing about however did give the ball away a lot in dangerous positions, The trialist Fox had a steady game, never made any mistakes but didn't shine either(think we were spoilt last season with DA).Keeper was very vocal, good pair of hands in poor conditions but not sure about the freekick .2nd half started much the same until 4 subs were made and then as much as I dislike him summerfield started to drive Town forward and with Vernon being a handful for the fullbacks Town woke up,Dembele switched from the right to the middle and then to the left and caused constant problems with his direct running and got his just desserts after good work from Tom B on the right.Im a little concerned about the back fours pace but I'm sure RS nows what hes doing,so overall a good workout in poor conditions at a friendly little club.UTM

Entertaining Game won a difficult wet pitch with poor conditions and quite cold
Highlights
McAllister
Clarke
Rose
Kelly
Midfield got poorer though especially after mcallister taken off
Jones good up front (playmaker and our best player)
Osbourne invisible tonight
Pace up front

Worries
Back four slow I can see us shipping goals
Midfield lacking bite
I have a feeling of averageness or at most above averageness so far
But hell what do I know it's only the third friendly and I've seen us rattle off friendlies and then be crap and visa Verda
We kept plugging away against a tiring but v hardworking Stamford side especially after they made it 2-2

I aint worried.  We all know what pre season is about cohesion, fitness.  Results are a bonus but its what happens in the league games for me.  Still early days and im not judging yet unlike some  🤔🤣

He was small and was out injured most of last season 😁😁
Anyway he had a good game and we lost some cohesion in midfield when took off

Remember they had done full training today so if they were sluggish in the first half it's hardly a surprise.  As RS says, it's about game time and fitness.  Getting a winning habit is nice too.

Clean sheets come from playing a consistent line up and everyone knowing their roles.  Not with lots if changes and trialists etc.

As someone says, usually our pre season form is no guide to actual season form.

Neither Fox or Cardwell are that small.

For me, not that good a performance, made to look average by an Evostick side.

Defensively for the 3rd game we gave poor goals away.

Up front Cardwell on his own hardly had a look in against two able central defenders.

So it looks like Slade will play Osborne out wide and not centrally, that at least seems consistent. Thoughts?

Wingers are an endangered species in Grimsby. It must say in our managers' contracts that wide positions must be occupied by central midfielders or full backs.

I might be in the minority with this, but I actually think Osbourne would be more suited out wide. He's good at dribbling and can pick a pass, but would get exposed defensively in the middle, especially if he is a part of a 2.

I don't think Osborne is that bad at getting his foot in and is willing to challenge but I agree he's perhaps not ideally suited for a midfield two. His deceptive running and clever play makes me think he'd perhaps do best playing just in front of two holding midfielders but then he's not the only person in our squad you could say that about! Wouldn't surprise me to see him selected out wide more often than not even though it's not really his position.

I like Osbourne as a player but would be interested on hearing the views of travelling Mariner fans how he performs away from home?

In the home games he gets a pretty high level of involvement and is key to much of our attacking play. I do not attend too many away games and just wonder if he "disappears" in away games or performs consistently in both home & away matches?

Interesting observation. RS stated after the poor away performances under his 'guidance' at the end of last season that some players still had a 'non-league' attitude in that they were fine at home but disappeared away. Not sure who this was aimed at as a few players came from non league

Just saw the highlights, love the way our 2 super experienced  central defenders managed to mark fresh air for the 2nd goal

Why can't we just play Osbourne out wide and Osborne in the middle?  This would resolve the issue.

I'm not sure he's the answer, but his knowledge of particle physics might come in handy if John Fenty ever decides to develop a death ray.

I cant understand how professional players can be made to look so ordinary against what are in effect, good Sunday league players. Hard to tell the difference barring Towns goalscorers.
Somebody has mentioned that they've had a hard days training. Granted but Stamford have also been at work all day. I don't think they've even started preseason training yet

Christ you all wanted him sacked a few months ago. 6th place finish and he's now the messiah and can do no wrong
Update:  I think I've got this right - He was the messiah. He then wasn't. He then was again. Then it turned out he actually wasnt. He turned into one big huge messiah again. Now he's not actually the messiah we thought he was . Now I'm hoping he rises again quickly

They are a level 7 club so only 3 leagues below us. Players at that level are a far higher standard than Sunday league players and they get paid.

It's a friendly early in pre season and we are still mixing sides up with trialists. It's crazy to read too much into these games.

How the intercourse did they end up talking about Town? I get the cheesy-grinned Manc's interest but an Indian-born Ozzie conspiracy theorist?!

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.
