So there I was, wondering (like you do) whether Matt Tees had scored twice as many goals for Town as Clive Mendonca.
Couldn't find a list of leading postwar GTFC goalscorers on the internet.*
Anyone know where there is one?

+++ GrimRob - could this be added to the 'Database'? +++

Sadly I think the days of a player staying at this club long term and scoring the amount of goals that Pat Glover or even Clive Mendonca did are long gone.

"Falls to Arnold... Arnold! That's it! Thats it! He's sealed it! Grimsby Town are back in the football league!!! Just a minute to go and Nathan Arnold makes it 3-1! Look at the scenes behind the goal! Look at the relief! The agony is finally over!!!"

That's right Jim, look at Bogle  any player scoring 20+ in a season and we will sell him.

Ron Rafferty's 145 post war goals appears to be best.

Naturally.

Funny, when you look back at the records of some legends, the stats are not always impressive. Matt Tees was my 60s/70s hero but Matt didn't rattle 'em in like Ron. Neither did Kev Drinkell or even Clive M. For that matter.

The most impressive over a season or two were people like Tommy Briggs, Billy Cairns and Bob Crosby who were playing when we didn't have super sides but still scored bagsfull.

As a goals per game striker the best I can personally remember was Ralph Hunt who got 30+ in 40 games in 1960. Sadly he got a bad knee injury and was never the same player, went to Chesterfield and died young in a car crash. He was a big bruiser though and a deadly left foot. Him and Ron were a super combo that year.

Terrific pizzzza, thanks a lot. Funny how the stats remember things a bit differently to me!

There's a few names on that list that make me shudder though......

Great side that, the team i still harp on about because it was the side i grew up watching. Rafferty, Hunt, Johnny Scott ,Keith Jobling, Ron Cockerill, Don Donovan, Jimmy Fell, Cliff Portwood etc, Tim Ward was manager then. Great memories.

That's true but he wasn't as prolific as that sounds. Don't forget he was only 16 when he came into the first team. In 9 seasons he only broke the 20 mark once.

My era. What a great team-obviously did but I can't seem to remember them ever losing. There were none of the millionair bigheads as there are in todays game-everybody was down to earth. They all had their own individual positions and most teams played to a set formation- it was even headlines when the twin "striker" was introduced--oh the good old days when you could pronounce your centre forwards name and the clubs owned by local magnates-at least we are lucky in that respect.

He scored 102 in all competitions in 313 appearances of which 39 were as sub. according to my Les Trigg bible.

I distinctly remember the photo in the GET of Drinkell crouching down in front of the pontoon goal holding a ball with 100 painted on it!

Not saying you are wrong chaps, just that it was quoted as 89 in that link and also on Wiki, which is obviously not to be trusted. Don't think either site takes his cup goals into account.

Kev was at BP for 8 or 9 seasons and while we do look back on him as a bit of a legend, it's interesting that he was not always a fans' favourite and not always first choice striker. I can remember games where he was given some stick for his work rate or lack of it by some supporters.

After the initial euphoria of his debut and a few appearances he seemed to stagnate and become quite easy to play against. It was when Trevor Wymark came in 1980 that Drinkell learned what to do and turned into a proper striker and was looked at by bigger clubs. Eventually he went to Norwich for a paltry fee and did well there before moving on to Scotland.

I remember the game that Drinkell scored his 100th goal in.

We beat Man City 4-1 at BP, and he lifted his shirt to reveal a specially made t-shirt for the occasion.

His final 2 goals came on the last day of that season at Crystal Palace when we won 2-0, the day of the Bradford Fire.

Was there at Selhurst that day. Got a lift of a Palace supporting mate - his little brother was mad and was all for abandoning me. Was a good day. Then we switched the radio on.

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.
