Good.  Slade has a history of trying new things to improve the first team performance and results. He likes using objective data to good effect.

Probably because he was a teacher

Remember the abuse he used to get on here for being an ex-teacher?

Through the door there came familiar laughter,
I saw your face and heard you call my name.
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser,
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same.

The idea of strong link with the college/university for this type of stuff in my eyes is a much more financially viable option than bringing someone in that only works for the club.  A very solid move from GTFC, lets hope it is fruitful.

When Russell took over he made it very clear linking up with us at college was high on his agenda - just as he had done at Cardiff Met!

We've held several meetings with RS and his team, including the new S & C coach and are working very hard to provide him with tangible data he can use to assess conditioning levels. I can see this relationship only going from strength to strength with Town providing players and staff to run coaching sessions for our academy players and valuable, realistic work experience opportunities etc - exactly as it should be IMO.

Daryl is enrolled onto our Sports Science degree so is perfectly placed to facilitate that link - and may I add is very knowledgeable.

All points to a promising future for both club and institite.

What method is used to determine what sort of level of fitness the players are - is it bleep test or a bit more advanced than that? Just wondering how far off elite level I am - feel I'm probably around Unibond in comparison.

This is Grimsby, it'll be a some cones at either end of a field, more or less 20 metres apart, with Wilkie blowing his whistle at about the interval necessary, the gap between the blows might even decrease if he's remembered his stopwatch.

Well tend not to use the bleep test as it's very old-school and basic.

We've used a number of tests with high-level equipment to test all components of fitness. Particularly focusing on flexibility, speed, agility and outright endurance.

I found this very enlightening and encouraging! Sports science/ medicine has taken great strides in recent years (my younger daughter is a physiotherapist with a particular interest in athletic performance) and it seems that the message has finally got through to the BP structure (doubtless through Russell Sade) that 'physiology' really is key to athletic performance.

Could this mean the end to our notoriously slow starts at games.  If so, it could make a huge difference.

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

It should be noted that Russell has driven this. He set up strong links with the college during his previous reign but his successors had no interest in carrying it on and almost immediately put a stop to it. Something that was very short sighted IMO.

This is the reason why we're starting all over again to create and build this partnership.

Totally agree with your comments responding to the earlier posts but I didn't think Univercities had OFSTED, which I guess is the sort of institution the colleges sports science offering will be measured against.

Don't get me wrong, I am delighted GTFC has started to make strides into incorporating Sports Science into their operation which can only have a positive effect when virtually every other club in League 2 will be doing the same.

Keep up the good work

You are right mate - HE provision is inspected by QAA which we have also recently undergone. Our sports science is well integrated into our FE cohort and academies as a progression pathway and was praised during OFSTED.

I also agree that we've been left behind somewhat but previous, short sighted managers who didn't understand the importance and value in sports science. Thankfully that seems to be changing.

The Cowleys were former teachers too. I doubt there are any Lincoln fans currently ridiculing them for previously being in the education sector

Enjoyed that. Could have really done with a Daryl Clare coming through the ranks when we were non-league - had an incredible goalscoring record! Guess we were just a bit too high up in the pyramid for him when he was with us.

We did, he's called Dayle Southwell and barely got a start for the club

I see your point, but Dayle has still only proved himself at Conference North level so far. I hope he gets a good opportunity this season with Wycombe!

Sadly for Dayle, his best position was one where we were well served for players with Connell, Hearn, John-Lewis, Bogle, Amond... Hannah, Cook, Palmer.

If he had been a left sided midfielder, then he might've made a name for himself at Town

I'd say Dayle's record of 1 goal in 17 for Wycombe suggests his level isn't L2. Although perhaps he didn't get a settled run in the side.

Wiki seems to think he made 42 appearances for us scoring 3 goals. I think that's more than "barely a start". He was a world beater in the Conference North but it remains to be seen if he can cut it in league football. I think with pushing for promotion back into the football league it was hard to give him starts over other strikers we had but that doesn't mean he wasn't given chances to impress.

To be fair only 5 of those 42 were starts.

I agree (more importantly, the bloke who saw them in training every day did too) though, that we had better players at the time (although some mentioned above were signed a year after Southwell left). I think going down a level before going pro again was a good move/necessary.

He did make 42 appearances. 5 starts and 37 from the bench - I would suggest that is 'barely a start'. Source? Soccerbase.

I had to create an account to just question something in this statement, you clearly work with the college. My question being how can a sports science department be among the best in the country when it doesn't even run a Bachelors degree at a minimum.
Cannot help but feel this is misleading for any local kids who want to pursue a career in that path as the courses offered by the HE department are not sufficient to work in the industry
