To be fair it wouldn't be the worst appointment we have made in the past and he didn't exactly do a bad job here did he ? Ok yeah he did the dirty on us but let's put in the past and least he knows the league well and we won't be getting relegated

I'm not exactly thrilled with the thought of Slade, but i'm not suicidal over it either. He is a capable manager and we are in a bit of a pickle at present. If this appointment had been made when we were in serious relegation trouble last time, then it would have made sense to me, but we are in a strong position, much as we were when MB came in and i am unsure as to what the remit is for him. Is he just here to guide us through the rest of the season, or is he the long term future? Is it his reputation for building decent sides on shoestring budgets that is the attraction to the board? Do we see him as the man to take us forward up the leagues and into the new stadium? I suppose these things will come out at the press conference.

Im with you I don`t really want Slade but in all honesty he ticks most if not all of our boxes and an imaginative no 2 alongside with a long term view of him eventually taking over and RS becoming director of football would probabaly suit.

I am happy to welcome Russell Slade as our new manager.  Ok, he has not won anything, but that applies to many more managers too.  I very much doubt we could afford to employ those top managers who have a habit of winning promotions with the clubs they manage.

Whether you like him or not, he almost got us automatic promotion in 2005/06 when only a late equalizer for Northampton in the last game of the season gave that 3rd promotion spot to Leyton Orient.  He also did a brilliant job at Yeovil, getting them to the play-off final and being voted League 1 Manager of the Year.

I don't see him as a journeyman manager, but one with lots of experience in the lower Leagues and will back him fully as manager of Grimsby Town.

To those of you who state they will rip up their season tickets if Slade is appointed, good riddance, you are obviously not a supporter of Grimsby Town!

just spoke to orient season ticket holding mate who couldn't speak highly enough of him. the italian chairman got rid of him after he bought the club from hearn and it's been downhill ever since. pragmatic, tactically astute and well organised were mentioned. bit of hoofball, but only when the circumstances dictated it, but equally played some lovely stuff when they got the chance. bought good players in and improved the average ones that were already there.
needles to say they'd have back in a flash!

more stuff here

It's obviously going to be Slade, he was clearly approached prior to all this, and a couple of token days to give the appearance of finding a "replacement".

I was desperate for him to come back in 2009, less so now. Hopefully, he still has the hunger to manage and is not just after another pay cheque. At least we'll have a coherent strategy after the scattergun approach of the last few months.

Lets remember the good bits about Slade,

We beat a full strength Spurs and only a cut lip Shearer beat us in the next round,

Gary Jones, Reddy, Rob Jones, Mildenhall Whittle and few other good signings,

Lets look on the bright side guys.

Macca would go down very well with me as No. 2, he's GTFC through and through and he'd be desperate to be assistant for a couple of years at Town and take over eventually. His heart would certainly be in the right place and I'd trust Slade to nurture him and make him more experienced.

I don't see much of a future for about 196 of our midfielders though. Maybe Dis' Town career might last a bit longer, Will he he give Venney et al a go? Do Luke Summerfield, Rhys Browne, Sean McAllister and Josh Gowling possibly have a future?

Why would you for one minute suggest that Macca isin't ambitious? Just because he hasn't taken a significant role yet since being a player?

Maybe he has just been biding his time waiting for the right opportunity

He might be ambitious but he has not shown it in the past. He never was as a player and he hasn't been since he stopped playing. That does not make him a bad person, but maybe not what we want right now and probably not a manager of the future.

Paul Wilkinson as Slade's assistant is a solid appointment.

It's years ago now, granted, but I remember Mick Boulding saying that his development with us was down to Wilko. And obviously it helps to have someone in the dugout who 'gets' the club and the town.

Whilst I don't want Slade back as manager , if he gets the post then I will support him like I would anybody managing GTFC. What does concern me is that Slade has never achieved a promotion with a league team and that is something that is critical for us if we can tap into the interest that a new ground will achieve.
I also think it is a bit of a gamble by JF because he obviously comes on here and knows how wide the feelings are about not having Slade back. If things don't click straight away then that coupled with the anti-Slade feeling could impact season ticket sales in much the same way that MB's " experimental " approach to the end of the season could have.

^^Just how wide is the feeling about having Slade back.  Have you actually counted how many have posted that, and how many haven't|?  Also, we fishy posters are a very small minority of Grimsby Town fans, so I don't know how you can say there are a lot of people not happy about Slade coming back.

If it is Slade, let's hope his signings are more like Jones (×2), Reddy and Cohen than Mendes, Goodfellow and Downey!

Watching the Michael Reddy video of his goals (no wonder it is over 12 mins long), I was amazed how quick he was, how clinical he was and how many goals were scored with runs from our own half.

(I know only the goals are shown but he looked a lot better than I remember.  Good job Fenty did not sell him to Bristol for £300K and a shame he got injured).

I hope we don't have half the bull sh1t we had when Bignot was appointed, do the Q&A bit then just get on with re-building the spirit.

Could you imagine if it's totally unrelated. Something like "Youngs have extended their deal" or "ST prices frozen for next year".

"Thank you for coming everyone.  So I suppose you all know why you're here today.  I think I can say with a certain amount of exactitude that this must be the worst kept secret in football but good to see you all here.

So anyway, down to business.  I can confirm that the club are pleased , after some good what I might call, footballing fortune, to announce that we have agreed a deal to serve proper fish and chips inside the ground."

Why would you for one minute suggest that Macca isin't ambitious? Just because he hasn't taken a significant role yet since being a player?

Maybe he has just been biding his time waiting for the right opportunity

He's nearly 50 ...surely he shouldn't  bide much more time ?

Dont buy into this hoofball molarky that some town fans seem to hold against slade. I seem to remember playing good football through the middle with bolland and woodhouse with expressive wing play from players like andy parkinson. We mixed it up when going forward by either pace through the channels by reddy or clever hold up play by gary jones. Far better and techniquelly savvi than the lob-sided aimless dross weve endured in the past few months. Also think slade can draw out the best from the likes of sam jones, osbourne, asante, mills and even bolarinwa. Would welcome slade back but in truth was hoping for nigel adkins

Have it on good authority that Fenty is set to announce, that after a major review of safety regs and policy, the ban on thermos flasks is to be relaxed for a trial period. Great news I'm sure you'll agree.

Believed it until right at the end when Fenty said ground instead of building.

Very poor conference IMO especially as it was a foregone conclusion as to who they were "unveiling" as the new manager and asst manager. As usual, very poorly chaired by Fenty.
At least lets have an articulate person to chair these events, Philip Day for instance, or perhaps one of the match day car parking attendants. Amateurish.

That information definitely was a number 2.

Macca has been linked with every conceivable role at BP at one time. Except perhaps the vacant Chairman role.

I do agree but the initial stage managed press conference always look a bit tense and artificial.

Just heard Slade on the radio and away from the constraints of the press conference he sounded upbeat, glad to be here, and aims to get us into the league above.

Good God no, or not one I can link to here! I just heard it on the Burnsy show. David Burns said he felt right at the outset that Marcus Bignot was not right for the club and so it proved. He said he always had a lot of respect for Slade though implying I suppose he felt this appointment was a better fit.

Sorry I cannot do the linky things.

Well done to Nigel Lowther for raising the elephant in the room regards how Slade left last time, which clearly wasnt appreciated by JF.

At least we now know..... both parties had a part to play and the timing of the negotiations was wrong.....apparently.

Slade mentioned the structure again.....certainly seems a hot topic amongst managers these days doesnt it ?

Also mentioned tough decisions to make on some of the squad but thats his job to make them......i guess a few of those out of contract wont be getting a renewal.

I don't really care about what people thought of the press conference, or even really too much about what happened here with Slade over 10 years ago. I care about the football and about results.

Slade is a knowledgeable, proven, experienced manager, time served at levels above this one, with very promising contacts, and Wilkinson has impressive credentials too. I hope we can move on with the emotion, and the slatings and the bitterness and get on with the job.

At least we might expect to see some semblance of a football method in our games, if not immediately then next season. A pragmatic system. Some sense and logic in the selections and a sense of 'buy in', trust and respect from the players, and, a manager in control, in whom you can have faith and who actually knows what he's doing.

I think the club have made good decisions in this last week. Controversial maybe, but every reason to feel positive I'd say.

While the subject of why MB was removed was pretty much chopped off at the knee's i felt the following snippets were interesting;

RS -  his brief is top 7 next season -  MB was quite clearly of the opinion that the structure of the club is weak and needs strengthening to support it going forward and spoke of "the project". In his parting interview he also stated he thought he had time.  Obviously in the 6 months he has been at the club something has changed dramatically as JF seemed supportive of that view initially. We started the season with Hurst & JF saying remaining a League 2 club was a priority, MB's appointment was the same with us being able to consolidate...now its top 7 next season !!  Quite a sea change.

JF - Like a breath of fresh air   -   didnt take long for the air to go stale did it ? I presume MB doesnt suffer from halitosis so i imagine MB's constant chat of Listen, technical ability, structure,S&C coach has worn JF down while RS is immediately more ambitious, referring back to his previous stint as first year laying foundations for the second year promotion push.

JF - RS the man to take us forward -  erratic performances, erratic selections and perhaps MB's longer term plans just didnt add up in the end and give the board enough faith in MB.

To be fair to JF he suggested that MB said some players would be leaving and that didn't happen and we are left with 31 players which is too many especially when some that MB brought in haven't really improved us.
