For those driving from Grimsby I would go via the M62.

The quickest sat-nav route is 5 minutes quicker but has 5 sets of roadworks to get through rather than 1 set going via M62.

I've also been told no alcohol is served in the away section of the ground?

I make the trip Just south of Crewe to Grimsby to Crewe often, and your best route is M180, M18, M1, A38 to Derby, A50 to Stoke, A500 Crewe its dual carriageway/motorway up to about 5 miles short of Gresty Rd and no roadworks causing speed restrictions or lane closures I am aware of. As you approach the ground there is a big ind estate with a decent amount of parking 10-15 mins walk from the ground and is straight onto the main road out with no real queues in sight after the game

Yes thats it, make sure you come into Crewe along Weston Rd you follow signs for Crewe Gates Ind. If you turn off the A500 into Crewe a bit further along (B5071 Jack Mills Way)  it will take you right into the permanent traffic jam outside the ground/railway station suggest you avoid it.

Is there a designated pub for away fans?

Decided last night to go. Just having a late breakfast at the Little Chef on the A500/M6 junction. See you all there for 3pts. #UTM

I took your route and it took me over 3 hours with the roadworks and average speed cameras. Not to mention driving through what seemed like a mountain range!
