The sad death of Graham Taylor brought to mind his time at BP and his partnership with Jim Thompson. The first two names on the team sheet every week .... almost literally.

Full backs often seem to come in pairs. It used to be something to do with the way defences were organised on a sort of axis system around the centre half. As one moved up the wing,  the other sidled across the park to cover the middle while the centre half moved out to the side. The best pairs seemed to do this by telepathy.

Cohen and Wilson for England in the 60s. Reaney and Cooper for Leeds, Rice & Nelson for Arsenal and my favourite pair - Hindley & Winfield for Forest. Peter Hindley's nickname was Tank and he was huge and fast with the turning circle of a Challenger Mk3, a sort of Mel Sterling on steroids. John Winfield was a superb defender with a great left foot. I never saw a winger get the better of John. He would easily have been an international player with a bit more speed. Another long serving pair were Jack Hubbard and Jackie Brownsword at Scunthorpe, they seemed to be there for ever when I was a lad and Graham Taylor's dad was writing their match reports for the Football Telegraph.

I'm sure there were many others people can think of.

John McDermott had a few partnerships, the ones I think may probably best would be with Paul Agnew, Gary Croft and Kevin Jobling. But there is no real McDermott and ...... as a well known duo, at least not  in my mind anyway though some may feel differently of course.

It will be interesting to see if Mills and Andrew stay long enough to make a good pairing. It's harder now with more team changes but the signs look promising, they are beginning to look the part especially as wing backs.

“If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind.”

Andrew has already said that he is determined to get another deal here at the end of the season. Think he's a fairly local lad too. Him and Mills look like they could be our full backs for a while, unless MB has other ideas. We'd have to do well to sign players much better than those two, who i think have both been excellent.

As for Macca, i always imagine him and Agnew as a pair, but him and Jobling, who wasn't a full back by trade, were around for the glorious Buckley period.

May dad once said "Macca is a model pro with a great reputation in the game, Tony Galimore just has a reputation".

To be fair Gali could play a bit on his left foot at least.

Gallimore was a pretty good full-back, despite his, erm, extra-curricular habits! Only got a chasing from a winger once in a while, but then most full-backs do at one time or another.

He obviously held us in great regard as his botched penalty for Barnsley the season after he left us showed!

I was at that match. IIRC we drew 0-0. So his miss was worth a point. To top it all. The players tunnel was at the corner of the ground where the Town fans where. So from getting dogs abuse all game he got a rousing chorus of.

We love you Gally, we do.

He just walked off without raising is head !!

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

John Stone was one of my favourite right backs, just loved his no nonsense style

Not sure who is left back "partner" would be mainly?, Shaun Mawer?, Andy Moore?

I remember seeing Man U play Forest in 1969 - and George Best tormented poor John Winfield for most of the first half, repeatedly tying him in knots - he scored after not only beating Winfield but at least 3 other defenders.  Luckily for Forest he lost interest after half time and they came back to claim a 1-1 draw.
