First two named started on the bench in today's Solihull v Gateshead game, Osborne subbed after 49 the other two came on after 70.

I didn't think Biggie sounded too hopeful about the Solihull pair

Maybe we need to leave them for a bit and not act too keen.  Don't want to end up in a blind auction with ourselves.  The players will feel like they've had their chance of league football careers denied them and might agitate for a move.  We've still got three weeks until the window closes and Solihull might feel differently come the end of the window.

Still 20 odd days left in the window................ it isn't warmed up yet! If I am honest I would settle for what we have now if it meant Omar staying to the end of the season...............oh yeah that includes Henderson & Comley loan extensions too!

They are bound to be distracted by the interest, even if they don't get a move. Maybe explains why their respective managers left them out.

Nice to not feel desperate. Hope MB gets who he wants but it looks like worst case scenario he'll have the summer to build for another go at League 2.

Jones has been on the bench the last couple of games. Osborne started but went off injured.

I understand the offer we made for Jones was 'derisory'. Even if the player wants to come, we can't expect clubs to give up their contracted assets for peanuts.

It's testing their resolve, with players with 6 months left on their contract they may just panic and let him go cheap, I can easily see all three happening before the window closing, when clubs take the money and run, even if it less than they are valued. With Omar, he has 18 months left on his deal so we are less pressured to sell.

As I often say, these things tend to hang on whether the player wants to come or not. I heard that the Solihull pair do but don't know for sure. Haven't managed to find out if Jones wants to join from Gateshead. All in good time, as always. MB seems to be hinting that we won't hang about if we can't do deals within budget and will move on. If players want to go and clubs block them, that tends to create some problems, so let's see....

The fact Bignot was so coy about it when asked suggests things are ongoing. But of course, you can't really take much away from interviews with managers with these things.

Spot on, I am sure MB & Gary Wilde have other options and I would imagine that the players and Solihull Moors know that too.

Reading on the Solihull forum last night, a few were suggesting the BBC article referred to the first offers for the pair and that they are considering the second over the weekend. A few also said they are close to an agreement.

Yeah right, lets just throw any amount of money to get them, its called testing the water.  Like Barnet  did with us for Bogle, and West Ham did with Defoe.

I know Hurst always seem to pull a rabbit out the hat last minute but It is nice to feel a bit more secure this early in the transfer market.
Would really love to see Henderson stay with a possible Asante and Osborne joining the squad.

Of course we have to trust MB's judgement on player recruitment, but have any of you seen these players play? Lots of people getting excited about them.

I'd never seen Bogle play, or Yussef or Hearn or any of a number of players we have signed over the years. When players are being talked about and chased by others, you are usually onto a good thing. There are hundreds of Summerfields and Berretts and Vernons out there and there is a reason nobody is raving about them or particularly excited about them signing. Solid pro's who will do a job are in abundance. Players who get fans on their feet and make things happen are not in such plentiful numbers, which is why they take some prising away from their clubs and the fans of those clubs getting upset about it tells me they are worth pursuing.

Im sure they are good players at the level they are playing at. As someone who has never played the game I wouldn't trust myself to state any of them are capable of stepping up to L2 level. I guess we are all hoping those who have 'scouted' them do know. Its not an exact science and even the best coaches have got it wrong. Until they are playing for us its 'rose tinted glasses time'

Social media allows people to get excited about players where in the past it was word of mouth in the main. Appointing Gary Wilde was a really smart move in my view as it gets the club to look at players based upon the opinions of both Gary & Marcus rather than just the view of an individual which can often end up going either way.

That is what makes it so exciting seeing a rough diamond learning his trade. The likes of Bogle catch the eye at any level but it is great to see him evolve into a much talented and much sought after striker.

Shrewd investment is what it's all about a mixture of experience and talented youth get this right and your laughing.

A very good point, for all the signings Marcus has made, attempts to make or goes on to complete, possibly the most astute could be Wilde. Seems to be quite some time since we had such a management system in place. January could now be a time to regroup and rethink the seasons strategy, strenghten areas  and become stronger, not something that's happened much in recent years.

I'm not sure that is true. His last minute signings in the transfer windows always seemed poor panic buys because there were gaps remaining in our squad and he felt that he had to fill them, like last minute Xmas stocking fillers. Either that or he was an inconsistent judge of a player.

Anyway, don't have to worry about that now. Enjoying us being more proactive this January.

Agree, but needs to be recognised that MB has the weight of being an EFL club manger and  possibly has a few more quid to play with (nothing major but enough) to be able to shop earlier on his side. 5000+ gates make a small difference I am sure.

I would still argue that Hurst had more spending power comparatively as a top budget Conference manager than MB has as a mid table (?) budget manager in League Two. Not as much cash wise but more power when compared level to level of league ie bigger fish for the respective division. More of a comparison between the two manager's approaches to transfer windows can still be made rather than player for player, as like you say, we are now a league club.

Having said that PH was in MB's current position budget wise in the summer and look who we brought in last minute, Tuton and Vernon...

Somebody on the Solihull forum suggesting that it's a done deal for both Asante and Osborne and there is to be an announcement today (Tuesday). Guess we'll find out in due course.

I got told last week Osborne was done. Seemed to have been trying to add Asante and Omar's sell on clause which has held up the deal.

We seem to be taking a lot of players on trial from the birmingham area which is a good thing, if there good enough it benifits us and if not then no worries. A lot more going on since we have wilde in the staff now.

Sorry I forgot the new Fishy rule........................to participate on this board you cannot give the manager who got us up any credit. PH actually signed players from FL clubs (for free) e.g. Podge Amond amongst others. How many fees did we pay for players in the last 3 seasons?

I like Marcus he's a positive appointment and is what feels like starting a good run, I was never too keen on PH both how he came across in the media and n the pitch but we need to get over this everything Marcus does is great and everything PH did was wrong crap as it's getting a bit boring TBH. Yusseff apart the players that have done well for Marcus recently where actually brought in by someone else.

To be fair he has had no choice as he came in during the closed season and has only had chance to bring in the one player mentioned. Bignot did have the balls to play the young keeper that PH never did.

As I said I did not like a lot of what PH did on the pitch and not bringing on youth was one of them, but the threads where about brining in players and not selection TBH.

Woh! We're talking non league player acquisition here

Yeah but it feels good to use our big boy status and cherry pick some of its finest. Those gleened so far, Zak Mills etc. not done too bad.

I remember previous where we wouldn't touch non-league player's with a 20 foot bargepole and look where that got us with a bunch of mercenaries on their way down.

I think Omar's success has made us realise, adding in putting faith in a non-league manager with zero previous League experience and letting him do things his own way after the (slow and steady) progress under a man of similar ilk in Hurst.

Be careful mate you might break "the new rule".............

On a serious note there are gems out there in non league but between Buckley and Hurst we probably never had a manager who could be arsed to take the time to find them.

I am sure whoever comes for a trial or is signed, they will not be some random players. We may not know anything about them but the new Management Team certainly will. Gavin Gunning is a case in point. Mind you he sounded very laid back in his interview.

Osborne deal close, not sure on Asante and Gateshead's valuation of Jones wasn't deemed as value for money so we moved on.

Some pretty strong stuff in there! Expect Solihull will cut off their nose to spite their face and lose him for nothing in the summer.

That's what I can see happening now too.

When they read these comments from Bignot they'll just dig their heels in even more or refuse to sell to us.

That wouldn't bother me too much because we're not in a relegation battle and aren't in desperate need for players. But I'd just hope that they player(s) concerned would still want to come to us in the summer for free, rather than have extra competition or higher level clubs in the chase.

I'd be interested to hear the other sides story but MB does sound sure of his and Towns position on this. Sure, we walk away and lose Osbrne but there are other players. Solihull though are left with an unsettled player who has clearly had his progress in football blocked. And Solihull lose any chance of getting Towns potential bunch of young stars on loan there.
Town under-evaluating, or someone at Moors with a bit of a grudge with Marcus?

No hint of any other bids either, maybe they're waiting on this 'bidding war' they all predicted, only to find other clubs reluctant to go above Towns valuation.
Hope to find out the whole story soon, once the deal is thrashed out and he's wearing a Town shirt.

Or SM are waiting for Bogle to be sold so they can ask for a greater wedge of cash upfront from a cash rich club.

Sounds like Solihull may have gone up a level on the playing side recently but are still amateur in the way they do business.

Obviously they do not want to sell their players for peanuts but looking at Marcus's involvement with the club I am convinced we will have offered something sensible. I just wonder how much emotion surrounding what Omar "could" go for and what they stand to make on any sale is involved in this?

Osborne looks like a decent player at that level but there are lots of players about at this time of year and judging by yesterdays reserve game Marcus & Gary Wilde will have a back up plan.

IF Osbourne is as good as Solihull think he is then there will be other clubs interested and maybe they will be prepared to give them more by way of cash?

They probably think they let Omar go too cheaply given his current predicted value which is understandable. When you are buying anything you usually have a value you think is reasonable whilst the seller also has a view. If you are too far apart you move on.

Not sure I am totally convinced about whining in the media despite not mentioning any club or player

Yeah i think it's important that we maintain a balance here. Yes we want us to sign this player/these players from Solihull, but we shouldn't just expect that they'd let them go for less than what they value them at.

Don't forget we're going to be in the same position soon with Bogle. And there may be fans of teams like Norwich, Forest, Brentford etc coming out with comments that we should stop standing in the players way and let him go to whichever 'big club' is in for him. We as fans probably won't know what's been offered, just like we don't in this instance where we are comparatively the big club.

I think they also need to consider that when they let Omar go they where in the 2nd tier of the National League and a deal and price would have been negotiated which relates to a club at that level so if they are narked about maybe missing out on a "Bogle pay day" then they need to get over it , Feels like it's got to "take it or leave it time" to me.

They paid £40,000 for him. Was reading about it last week and it's a great story. He was only spotted accidentally by an Arsenal scout that was looking at someone else and usually only works on the continent. Think he was home for the holidays.

The lad got laid off from his job at Bentley cars a week before Christmas and 2 weeks later was training with the Arsenal first team. There were probably one or two Bentley's in the training ground car park.

I think Marcus could perhaps learn from PH on this one !!!!!
It's not just if he p1sses Solihull off. It's about being seen to be discreet.
Other clubs will look at the way he does business and judge accordingly.
It's obviously nothing major. But he might like to watch the wording on future statements.
To my mind, a simple statement such as below would suffice.

'it's frustrating for both us and the player concerned, but at this stage the selling club don't seem to be playing ball. From our point of view there is nothing more we can do.'

That says just as much. But in a far less confrontational way.

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'

Hurst often had a go during windows, especially at agents but never specified who and which clubs, the only thing Hurst was indiscreet about was the ear-cupping after Nath's goal at Wembley, for all I supported him I found that a bit distasteful. I'm not sure these are the wisest words to utter but if it comes off it'll have been a masterstroke.

Just hope their forum isn't too representative of their club. They're a bit weird on there, not to mention a little 'green' on how football, particularly money matters work. They sound like they've been watching football for about 18 months.

I'm not even sure how a club puts a value on a player. Rather like a house for sale at a notional price, in the end the house/player is sold for whatever a buyer is prepared to pay. The difference is that a house always has some value provided that it remains intact. However, with the Bosman rule or even a career-ending injury, this is not the case with a player. Should Osborne be on a contract until the end of the present season and decline, or not be offered, a new one, he will be a free agent in May/June and the club will receive zilch. In the present case, if the Solihull valuation is higher than any club is prepared to pay in January, they may well receive zilch in the summer anyway. Assuming Marcus is quite prepared to play 'hardball' over this, perhaps he should give/may already have given Solihull a deadline date for their decision and walk away if Town's valuation does not match theirs. It is possible that Osborne may then refuse a move to another club even if another bidder is prepared to pay the valuation price and walk away in disgust in the summer. Solihull are clearly playing a risky game and may well have an extremely unhappy and de-motivated player on their hands over the next few months.

I thought this thread was about recruiting players not dragging up "old baggage" about what previous managers did after winning a game, can't see how the ear cupping this is relevant to this discussion...........In fact its getting a bit boring now.

What is easy to forget , now hat we have left the hell hole of non league, is how many non league players 'follow the manager' . It is so very common at non league level for a manager to leave and take half a dozen players with him even up to southern prem or to a certain extent the level below the conference. If Bignot and his team have a good name non league players will follow, especially if they are treated fairly and given a chance

Aspin, moaning long ball merchant.

Gateshead, a bunch of jealous fans in Newcastle's shadow, who I hate more than any other Conference club bar FGR for their pathetic diving, the way Craig Baxter launched himself up in the air and screamed after Scott Neilson dared to go near him and previously smug and arrogant manager Mills, a despicable individual with no integrity and coaches his players to dive and win dirty, despite his label as a man who plays good football.

We can laugh when he signs for us for free in the summer then along with Jamey Osborne.

"I'm not prepared to deal with Grimsby. When I told the player what they had offered he laughed, which says it all."

Hope that's true Aspin, or you'll have some explaining to do for dragging a player into your little tirade.
The Bogle factor at work again, everyone assumes he's going for XX Million so they want a slice of it, regardless of what he goes for, if indeed he does go. Shouldn't someone on the board at Gateshead be making this statement anyway?

Yes, there's every chance that Town went in low, we've had Fenty knock back clubs and call the offer 'derisory' but I've never known him, nor the Town manager at the time shut the door on that club and tell them never to try attempting the club ever again. How professional.  It's the oldest tactic in the book to start low, up the bid, hence why negotiations drag out, at every level of football.

Again the manager of poorly supported tin pot non league club displays their jealously that we invested in Omar's talent (in time and money) and could now possibly reap the rewards.

Aspin & Gateshead are just sniffing that we might have some cash and chancing their luck, what the possible sale of Omar Bogle has to do with buying a player from a p1ss poor non league outfit I will never know................ He's a moron clearly!

If the Gateshead board want to a deal for cash there is sweet FA their manager will be able to do about it, they have form on this apparently.

They don't like us we don't like them, we are in the FL they are not

Is he?

According to reports Rotherham put a bid in for £850k which Town declined. Dont remember reading or hearing JF or MB naming the club, calling it derisory or refusing to deal with Rotherham in the future?

Maybe we did make a bid, remembering that the player is now in the last few months of his contract and is playing in non league. We arent going to be offering £100k are we? £10-15k tops I'd have thought.

I didnt like MB's outburst re other clubs holding back their players and I dont like Aspin's outburst either. Is he allowed to name GTFC?

I got slagged in another thread for stating I know a player at Gateshead but i will add that the same player had said he thought  Aspin was for the chop before they won 4-1 on NYE v Barrow. Maybe under a lot of pressure, certainly sounds like it!

Football people talk rubbish, listen to some of MB's interviews, he can't give a straight answer to save his life. Like I said, if they want to not negotiate and let him sign for us for nothing in the summer then by all means allow us to, we are in no danger of going down, we could easily push on next season as all these targets we have are out of contract in the summer.

Funnily enough, at the time of MB's appointment, I was told by a Town insider that Aspin had indeed been in for the job and had taken rejection very badly so I'm not at all surprised about his reported reaction.

On a general point, I think there's a danger we don't get any of the targets we're in for now we've shown our hand so early in the window.

I think one or two need a sense of balance and perspective, irrespective of whether or not they like Gateshead or Aspin personally. He might have shown a bit more class in his comments but he has a point.

Sam Jones is their best player, on a two year contract with great potential. We offered a silly amount of money to try to sign him - they dismissed it out of hand and called it like it was - a bit like we did with Barnet's daft bid for Bogle a couple of months back.
It's all relative and par for the course, and been going on between clubs for years. Some of our fans are quite indignant about the comments as though we have a right to take who we want from non league for sod all. How would people have reacted last season if a L2 club had approached us to sign Bogle for (say) 25/30k?! There'd have been derision and pant wetting.

I feel a bit sorry for the player actually. It's ok Aspin saying he 'laughed' when told of the bid, but he might have liked to play for a league club in front of a proper crowd, and really progress his career. Obviously, we could make a better use of everyone's time by making a sensible bid that can actually be considered or we can move on. I don't think this reflects well on either club particularly.

Just checked this and it says his contract expires in June 17, so one year deal.

I had a good read through the Solihull  message boards as we were interested in 2 more of  their players.  It was very clear that their fans rated Jamey Osborne very highly.  The club gave him a 2 year contract, despite coming from a lower league.

They rated him much higher than Asante and quite a few higher than Omar.  Against league teams Luton and Yeovil Osborne demonstrated his excellent skills.

How much did we offer?

500 quid and a box of Haddock,

Aspin only eats cod so he turned it down

Seriously I would have thought about 5 grand and they are thinking 50,000,

BUT

We could settle for 25,000k if their board tells Aspin they need the money.

We may have laughed it off chaos, but the club wouldn't publicly say that we'd never do any dealings with the club again. Laugh off the shitty bid and get on with your life. It does feel like his annoyance goes beyond the bid.

Has anyone got any definitive details on Osborne's contract at Moors? A quick peek on their forum seems to have us Grimsby fans put in our place, as Osborne apparently is signed until 2018, despite 2017 being quoted.
I've only seen his contract as ending June 2017, but an extension could have been made meantime. Would put a slightly different complexion on things, just not sure which websites would be bang up to date.

Telegraph now reporting (twitter) that Neil Aspin's comments in today's article refer to our first bid for Jones.
Bignot has since spoken to Aspin and we've made two more bids. Currently being dealt with by both chairmen (yes I know, we don't have one) but there is no problem with Aspin.

As it should be. Aspin obviously won't want to lose him but the board must decide what is in the best interests of the club.

Think that just represents a change of tone from the manager - seems to me that we have not kept our cards close enough to our chests - one thing that our former manager was very good at.

Maybe TOC, but we as a club haven't come out and shown our cards in this situation either. Aspin was the one who went public about our interest in Jones. And the interest in the 2 at Solihull has just been leaked somewhere (GTFC or SMFC) as Bignot hasn't spoke about them until recently when it was already somehow common knowledge.

Was referring to all three - the Gateshead journalist has made it look far worse than it probably should and Solihull are naturally concerned about getting the best price for what appears to be their prized asset.

Obviously take it with a pinch of salt in regards to Jamey Osborne.

Offer has been accepted, deal to be finalised once Jed has completed his takeover of the club.

Not exactly comfortable with this.

I'm not believing anything until it appears on the OS, this is now the 4th or 5th time that the deal has been "done", but as MB said they've not been consistent with offers and answers to them.

Obviously take it with a pinch of salt in regards to Jamey Osborne.https://bsolihullmoors.runboard.com/t3396,offset=90#post28088

What a thread that is. Try reading it all in one go while holding on to your sanity.

Sounds promising on Osborne though, think Biggie is playing this one perfectly.

Plenty of good players in that league, I hope we are one of the teams in for Paul Lewis at Macclesfield.

I've noticed that nearly every football forum is like this where they go from one thing to another. The best one I have seen so far is the good old Fishy. Well done to the admin.

Best thing on that thread is when it wanders onto grammar pedantry,  while Jamey Osborne is constantly referred to as Jamie Osbourne. I'm not sure which one we're bidding on now

They aren't.Thats the point.

Some fan asked BetVictor for odds and got the response they understood it was a done deal so would not offer odds.

That's the problem though isn't it? We have chased them for so long that if they don't look like world beaters from day one, there will be more grumblings and posts saying we should have kept Clay and Podge.

After all this speculation i will believe it when its announced. It will take them time to get fully fit for this level but we sure need a good creative midfielder. Im keeping an open mind about Asante. Just hope he can step up as i dont know much about him.

Yes similar to anyone taking a step up if they are recruited you would imagine they will need time to adjust. If and I say "IF" they sign tomorrow I would like to see them get game time soon though.

Like Bogle playing in the Premier and for England you mean?

And why are we signing non-league players when we have released others (with league experience) on the basis that they wouldn't be good enough for Div 2

That's a stupid argument i must say. The level someone is playing at now doesn't equate to the level they may be capable of playing at. Should we not have signed Cockerill from Stafford Rangers going by that logic?

Or we where not in a position to meet the wage demands/contract length of the player and his agent.

Smaller club. Fewer people involved. Much more close knit. In fact there's more chance that the poster on their forum is the chairman.

Wouldn't happen here.

It's been "close" for about a week. Moved to "very close" now. Will there be an "extremely close" before they sign?

Marcus Bignot has told the Cleethorpes Chronicle he's confident of making two signings ahead of Saturday. We must be really, really, really, really, really close to concluding a deal for Osborne and Asante.

I really hope these two are as good as they are made out to be (Osborne especially), some seem to rave about Asante yet others are ambivalent to him.

Odds on the first poster to post after Saturday's game that we shouldn't have wasted all that time chasing these two non-league players:

8/13 - Ipswin
8/11 - fleabag1970
evens - Tagg
3/1 - jonnyboy82
5/1 - Davec
6/1 - Mariner_09
75/1 - MaccaBilk

Excuse me! No chance I'll say that after Saturday, will reserve judgement, I just hope they are good enough to transform our home form! I'd says I'm more like 5000/1!

They'll need at least a year for the record. 5 years is a bit much.

How sure are you that he already hasn't ?? !!

The wife was going away for a girly weekend.
I jokingly remarked  'I don't know whether to spend it watching porn or watching football'
'you may as well spend it watching porn' she replied
That's understanding darling what makes you say that? I asked

She said 'Well you already know how to play football'
