it will be expensive to get them. Not only paying up their contracts but also the match takings we'd miss out on when Lincoln don't get promoted.

Can't see it, apart from the obvious things like their short time at Lincoln and compo, they're a risk with no real background to suggest they'd crack League 2. Yet.

Worth the involvement just for the hysteria this will bring to Lincoln Vital though

They are more defensive minded than Hurst,

So no thanks.

The Cowley Brothers sounds like an 60s singing duo or a removal firm or something. If you thought the nicknames Scott and Hurst got were bad there's a ready made, obvious one waiting for them!

Lincoln this season: P16 F29 A14.

Hardly defensive is it? Maybe they played that way with Braintree because they knew their squads limitations?

Sound like 60's Eastend enforcers. The types that did nasty things for the Kray twins.

Do we imagine that we are a big enough club to just waltz into Lincoln and take their management duo, who are mere months into a 2 year deal? I think some are over estimating our pulling power.

I think if he packed in teaching to go full time in the Conference he will pack in the Conference to go full time in the League. If you are a manager in the League you have further to fall.

Sounds good to me would rather have an up and coming manager who wants to make a name for himself than someone who has got a lot of failure behind them I.e Wilcox, Stubbs and Mills
Also can't see Adkins or Evans being motivated by the Town job.
Best 3 Town managers imo last 25 years have come from Kettering, Scarborough and Boston.

People need to be realistic. The pool is very small. If you want someone who hasn't failed somewhere else then these are about your only option.

Look at the mess Newport got into when they took the big name and Terry Butcher signed a load of players including LJL. In 6 months they were bottom of the league and he was sacked. It's easy to let your heart rule your head like JF did with Newell I suspect.

Are these two worth a shout? Well, if you look at the choices, they have to be, don't they?

“If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind.”

Most of those goals were scored in August that's before they could get their plans across , a bit like us this season with most of our goals coming early in the season

Lincoln last 11 league and cup games  P 11     F 11      A  8

Hardly free scoring now.

Cowley as made it very clear he wants to manage in the FL that opportunity is doubtful with Lincoln , village rovers will win the league and daggers barrow tranmere and others all look very capable.  Yes their in the mix but as we all know football is a ruthless business

We don't I was just putting across that once they got their plans across to the players,

They have been low scoring games and not free scoring like they were in August,

They are similar to Hurst in wanting to win 1-0 rather than 4-2,

It would be nice if we had an attack minded manager who wanted us to score lots of goals,

BUT

As long as we are winning I suppose the score does not matter to most,

Me ?  I like to see a few goals and if the opponents score 2 and we score 3 I am happy.

But Pete, if your opponents score 2 every week, you've got to score 3 to win a game. I'm with Hursty on this one.

I'm not so sure myself. It would also involve a large compensation package i'd imagine, though nothing in football surprises me any more, so i wouldn't rule it out.

The more i think about it, unless we have the opportunity to attract someone like Adkins or Evans, which i seriously doubt, then the way forward is someone from below, as that has worked for us in the past. Someone bright and ambitious who is looking beyond us and knows he needs to succeed here to achieve that.

If the rumours are true, of Fenty not delivering on a fitness and conditioning coach, he promised Hurst.

I can hardly see him paying much, if any, compensation on a new manager.

Just took a coffee break and 10 minute comedy cheer up to catch up on Vital. Left to steam for a few hours, add a little spice and bring to the boil, then leave to simmer; stewed Vital with a side portion of fish is quite the dish

They'd be a good appointment the Cowley brothers. An intelligent pair that'd work day and nIght. If you don't know much about them have a watch of this Q&A with the fans when they joined Lincoln. The quality of the video isn't the best but I came away very impressed by their attention to detail and their hunger.

Shrewsbury have just employed a manager who in the last eight games managed a Grimsby side who scored 3 (2 pens) and conceded seven. All statistics can be manipulated either way but whoever we get will have a clean slate, a club on the up, happier fans and good squad of players UTM

Hehe! Would be nice to get the Cowley's just to p1ss them off. Oh how they laughed when we were relegated to non league. I said then that what goes around comes around and we would be back above them in time. Would be the icing on the cake to take their manager and then get promoted to league 1.

Nah he said he was "100% committed to Lincoln". Definitely didn't say he's 100% staying there, nor did he definitively rule himself out of the running for the Town job:

Cowley:"Nicky and I are 100 per cent committed to Lincoln City and the journey that we're on.

"We've loved our short time at the club and there's a long way to go. We're working day-in day-out to make this a better football club and bring success to the supporters who have been starved of success in recent times.

"We've been really buoyed by the support and the buzz around the city. Our commitment to this club is as strong as ever."

Doesn't say they're staying.

Quoted from Garth
After watching Hurst and Sniffers antics regarding loyalty to football clubs and their fans, nothing would surprise me anymore.

I agree to an extent, but he has obviously agreed to do that statement or instigated it himself, to pledge loyalty to the Imps which is fair enough.

To go back on what he said in that video would be brass neck territory.

"We've loved our short time at the club" - clearly wants to leave. I could sense the sadness in his eyes as he said they're preparing for Boreham Wood. Expect him to be at BP by the end of the week

If you read that more assiduously you quickly deduce that he may well be happy at Lincoln bit if a league club with a much bigger fan base came knocking he'd be off. Wouldn't be disappointed by his appointment, prefer Adkins but I think that's cloud cuckoo land.

I believe their respective families still live in Essex and he rents a place up here so ultimately one suspects he would prefer a return to his roots. Evidently, Nathan is now clipping at my barbers so will try and arrange my next visit when he is on duty to glean as much from him on PH et al.

No argument he is doing well with the Chimps (sick of hearing the b......s bleating every time I go for a pint) and if that continues he may be snapped up fairly quickly by ambitious clubs but I do not get the impression he would want to stay at a club for just 3 or 4 months before moving on. Seems a bit more "decent" than that having just left the teaching profession he is not yet corrupted by "football's greed" mentality.

A career to watch I suspect.

Their new investor has said that on Lincoln Vital that nobody from Town have approached Lincoln about the Cowleys. I think they'd be a fairly good appointment but it's just not going to happen.

Looking forward to a brighter future now Fenty has gone.

Whether it's going to happen or not, it's very enjoyable watching Imps fans panicking about it.

Sat thinking about this whilst on hols and the more I think about Cowley the more I like it
Speaks well and always seems very professional and very very ambitious
Could be a good match for us as life is about timing
Would just need to prove himself attack wise as was / is very defensive
Could we simply not offer him more money than gimps as shrews did to us
Look at this way
-He would struggle to hide his ambition to be a league manager of a forward thinking club- (that's us by the way)
-He would want the plaudits and the feeling a bigger club would bring-
-They already live in the area-
-They have witnessed first hand the excellence of our away support- (who the hell wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that)
-They have the opportunity to win over the home support with a couple of quick wins-
-Best take someone on who is on the way up with big but realistic ambitions rather than someone who thought it was a just a job (it's Gy but I need a job)
-Oh and by the way boys the salary is double-
JF you have my permission to use any of these bargaining points when you make you're approach..
Come on Town!!

You really think we'd be able to double their salaries? I'm sure Lincoln are paying them at least a decent wage in order to tempt them to give up their jobs as teachers (average salary of about £35K p.a) and to take up management full time. Whilst we're undoubtedly a bigger club than Lincoln, we're not that much bigger to start suggesting that we'd be able to double their salaries as well as paying the inevitable compensation that Lincoln would want. If we were going to start throwing that sort of money around we'd be better off trying to tempt a manager with good league experience and a history of success like Evans or Adkins.

Looking forward to a brighter future now Fenty has gone.

The way Lincoln City fans come across is like they'll be in The Premiership in 5 years , and we are just a village team . Like I've stated before I hope they stay non- league after their less than charitable away following over recent years .... F-em . Fox 🐺

Hurst cools talk of Shrewsbury Town links

GRIMSBY Town boss Paul Hurst has distanced himself from talk linking him to the manager's job at Shrewsbury Town.

Following Saturday's 0-0 draw with Exeter, Hurst was asked about reports linking him with the vacant position at the League One side.

"I know nothing about those links," he insisted. "I'm manager of Grimsby Town and trying to do the best I can here.

"The job in hand is here and we've got to try and finish as high up the table as we can. I just want to concentrate on playing better football than we did on Saturday.

"It doesn't affect me in my job in the slightest, I've been in football long enough. If you take your eye off the ball then you'll have problems.

"I can assure you that i'm not thinking of anything other than Grimsby Town."

I know it's difficult to understand sometimes, but maybe, just maybe, there are still some 'principled' people left in football. People who are not duplicitous, who actually show loyalty and who actually mean and believe in what they say. And hats off to them!

Cowley more or less said the same things.  I bet his name is put on the table when it comes to ideas for a new manager.  Now that we have had one manager from the lower leagues with more or less the same ethos, I would not be surprised if Fenty is thinking of Cowley as a candidate, already got some compensation money to put towards grabbing some low league manager.

Still think we need an experienced league manager with some promotions under his belt.

I personally don't feel the Cowleys have done enough at this stage to warrant taking over a football league club and would much prefer someone with football league experience not quite sure how they would fit the bill?In the real world IF GTFC decided they were the chosen ones they would offer them a bigger salary and they would come that`s just how it works nowadays.Things is other than people here putting 2 and 2 together and making 5 I doubt very much they were ever high on the radar but at least it`s wound the Imps up.

I'm not too fussed on The Cowleys. After some pondering I think I've been a little harsh on Lincoln City ....I hope they have a good season , come third (about 20 points above 5th )  then have the misfortune to lose to that 5th placed team in the PO-Final  . And then lose Cowleys clan to "a bigger team than that village down the road " following this implode , cough and splutter to the Conference North  .

Yep you are right, good point.  With Paul Hurst having these credentials at non-league level and it eventually working for Grimsby Town in the National League, perhaps Fenty and the board members will look at this in terms of who applies and perhaps targets and seek another manager who has had successful promotions either by the play-offs or automatic promotion at league level.

Stating the obvious, but if the above is the case, the Cowleys won't even be on the radar whatsoever.

Helgy, maybe you should point out to the Vital cranks that the Bookies are pretty much behind all of this, they put Cowley and others up to generate interest and shift the odds for their own benefit. You know this of course, but the explosion of anger and bitterness on the Cowley's thread is stunning, all because of some betting odds...we've now seen the age old catchment area 'potential', Grimsby's a hole/all of Lincoln is paradise routine, BP is a terrible ground and no manager would go there (!) and of course Fenty has bought all of the success we've ever had.

I pray for you Helgy, who on earth do you find to have a reasoned, sensible chat with in the footballing mental home that is Vital Lincoln?

It's the catchment area one that always  makes me chuckle. If anything, it's even more embarrassing that they can't fill our away end or average over 3500 at home if they're blessed with such a great "catchment area" compared to ours.

Looking forward to a brighter future now Fenty has gone.

Just had a quick look at Lincoln Vital after a talk of a meltdown with the gimps fans. Don't particularly want the Cowley's here but posts like this have made the links well worthwhile, taken off their site

Why would they consider going anywhere at the moment? Yes, they could probably manage at a slightly higher level, but so what? The reality of that can be very different to the ideal:

** At Lincoln they have a very affable chairman who allows them complete control of the playing side - they would not get that at many clubs. How many chairmen can resist meddling in team affairs? Not many at all. And how many clubs have interfering, useless directors of football screwing everything up? A lot have, and that is one of the wonders of the modern football world.

** They have a board of directors that has backed them to the hilt in the transfer market; this flows from the point above.

** They will be given lots of time to get things right on the pitch - many clubs have no patience at all.

** They have a great modern stadium already, which is fantastic for a NL club, and a new one in the offing. I wonder how many players decide to sign for Lincoln as soon as they see the ground? Victorian Blundell Park, to cite one obvious contrast, is absolutely dreadful in every way. A horrible, depressing place to watch football, so imagine what it must be like to work there every day.

** Training facilities are excellent at both SB and Sobraon. Apparently better than at certain other clubs locally.

** They have very useful links with the university and other organisations in the city which may be difficult to replicate elsewhere (impossible in Grimsby).

** The personal package - rumoured salaries, the house, the car - is extremely good for this level. How much do they need at present?

** They are testing their methodology in a professional environment for the first time; it would be extremely unwise to move on to a bigger club (and Grimsby are not, they are just at a higher level temporarily) until those methods are proven.

** In next to no time, they have built a very high quality squad that will get better and better as the season progresses; that must be as exciting for them as it is for us, and they will surely want to see that through.

** They have a great relationship with the fans which might be hard to replicate at a club where expectations would surely be higher. Grimsby supporters had a poor relationship with the manager who (eventually) got them promoted - why on earth would any manager want to step into that environment?

** And for the benefit of those who believe Grimsby have more potential, let's have a quick look at the relative demographics. The populations are roughly similar, although the City of Lincoln has 6,500 more people than the town of Grimsby; on the other hand, the urban area of Grimsby (including outlying areas) is still marginally larger than Lincoln's (i.e. including North Hykeham) but there isn't a great deal either way. But here is the important bit: the population of Grimsby is falling and has been for some years; the town has an older population than the national average; there is nothing in the town to attract new investment. There are social problems galore, a core industry that has all-but disappeared, a run-down appearance in general, limited educational facilities and much more. By contrast the population of Lincoln is growing (plus seasonal influx from students); it has a younger population than the national average. It has a university bringing young people and investment to the city in droves. It is a very attractive city on the whole - just look at the view from the executive boxes at Sincil Bank for starters. Lincoln is getting better and better all the time, and is a stark contrast to the city I left a third of a century ago. These gaps will continue to widen. Where would you sooner be?

They will leave Lincoln eventually, of course they will, but this is a very good place to be at this point in their careers. They have a very real chance of achieving something significant, of adding real value, of being remembered for the right reasons. If they are as smart as we think they are, they won't be going anywhere just yet.

It's funny because they say that we're the ones with our heads up our arses. I was hoping they'd go up as it's good for the area but they're in a fantasy land. Some nutjob is claiming that Fenty should have the freedom of Grimsby and we've "overachieved" because of him  .

Looking forward to a brighter future now Fenty has gone.

These Lincoln City fans are a disillusioned , lot I will flip all there talk around - After our withdrawal from the EU there will be a 'boom ' in the fishing industry , and the majority of the UK will flock to Grimsby ; the mothership of our wonderful new era . 🙃🐺

I didn't use to mind then but it seems over the last few years they've got above their station - ironically when they're going lower and lower .... Hopefully they fall even further through - what league are Cleethorpes Town in ? Wouldn't mind going to that one .

Lincoln fans in general are very envious of us of playing in the top two tiers of English football for over half of our history, in comparison they have spent 2/3 rds of their history in the bottom 2 tiers, Lincoln have 99.9999999999999% of the time been inferior to us, that's got to hurt, bless em.

Lincoln Vital only has about 4 or 5 toothless bell ringers posting on there, raising to 6 or 7 when they play us, but generally they spend most of the day gurning at a mirror hissing at the reflection.

Feels so good to be a Town fan.

They may well have a comparable catchment area to us but all those outside of the city walls are the descendants of pox plagued one eyed joskins who were banished from the city long ago. If they even saw a football, they would try to eat it or shag it.

It really makes me laugh when they wax lyrical about their city. My other half lived there while she did her uni course, so i spent a fair bit of time over there. Apart from Bailgate and the Cathedral, which is truly magnificent, it's fairly mediocre otherwise.

I'm sure those issues will be high on the list of considerations for any potential managers.  Well behind the minor issues of salary and position in the football ladder.  Remember when Pep turned down Manchester City because of the crack problem on Moss Side.

Up to a point, though Shrewsbury look to have done an 'unsettling' job on Hurst and clearly made their intentions known to him before last weekend. The usual arguments ensued between the two sets of fans as we were accused of belittling them and they responded in kind. Par for the course really.

Difference is that the bookies put Cowleys name in the headlines, there has been no approach from Town. But enough ammunition for the Vital mob to constantly shoot themselves in the foot with error ridden claims about Town and their own sorrowful history.

I do think Cowleys video statement was genuine myself, so I give credit to him for that, a nice touch.

Braintree have collapsed, and Lincoln somewhat morphed the other way, since the Cowley influence was removed/introduced.*

If Adkins proves to be merely the stuff of my dreams; I'd be happy rolling the dice with this ambitious pair.

*I know nothing of the story, bar Arnold and the table, behind either season - as we're now in the league 😜. Therefore, perhaps not well placed to judge how much credit goes to them...

Lived here for 40 years and never have sensed any great rivalry between us nor great dislike of us "cods". Obviously banter increases when we are in the same league but over those 40 years I would guess that may be 25% of the time at maximum.

There are those, as in all supporters, who hate the Mighty Mariners but I have met very few of them and most are quite genuinely quite complimentary when we are doing well.

Think they hate Scunny & Mansfield more than us.

Yeah, we've been here before Lincoln Mariner, think we basically deducted that the older lot are fine with us, just a certain element of the newer generation that feel the need to have 'bitter' rivals, even when those rivals won't play ball. Or stay in the same division as them

My take on it....we spent so much time above them, barely ever meeting them throughout the 80's and 90's that when we finally did meet up on a regular basis they somehow saw it as them finally having some success, forgetting that it was Town that had tumbled through the divisions to meet them in the basement, not them getting promotions that brought them to us.
They even insisted on following us down to the Conference!

Anyway, theories aside, Lincoln Vital is bloody awful....

Lincoln are our oldest rivals (we've been playing them pretty regularly for over 130 years in the Lincs Cup, if nowhere else!), but I've never considered it a bitter rivalry.

Truth be told, I don't really mind how they are doing, as long as it doesn't affect us and I feel much the same way about Scunny as well. I suppose this is because they were both generally a couple of divisions beneath us for much of the time I've been watching GTFC.

On the other hand, the Tahgers were a couple of divisions below us for most of that time as well, but I'm always pleased to see them lose, regardless of where they are playing. This is because I seem to have inherited my Dad's dislike for the place!

I don't know what all the fuss is about getting a manager. It's one of the easiest jobs in the world. You are respected by the community, you don't take shite from anybody. you only work 1 1/2 hrs. a week. prospects for promotion, you don't have to work in a uniform. you don't have to pay to get into the ground, you don't need qualifications, everybody likes you and you have got security---what a piece of cake

Always thought of Scunny as our most bitter rivals, probably since the Rathbone/Welbourne game which I saw as a kid. Hull were not such a big deal before the bridge opened and, when they were in the League, I tended to dislike Boston more than Lincoln.
