Great picture. Never seen that entrance - presumably that's the Barrett Stand in the background to the right?

Was knocked down before I was born, unfortunately. Amazing how few pictures there seem to be of it. Have heard so many stories - would be nice to know what it looked like.

If you scroll down page 1 there's a picture of what looks like Andy Gray diving across the front of a Town player and the stand in the background is the Barrett stand. It had "Peter Sheffield Travel in Style" painted on the roof

It was just a big old fashioned wooden structure which was moved from the old Abbey Road stadium in 1898 or whenever.

As I recall there was a previous Pontoon stand wasn't there from pre-1960?? Being from Cleethorpes I always went in the Osmond stand!

It's quite possible that the young lads running at the side contain me and my brother. We ran alongside the bus for what seemed like miles.I would have just been coming up to 13 yrs old and my brother 12.

We used to sell the Sports Telegraph in the Barratt stand for a couple of seasons and were let in for free at half time with our bag of papers but i think 72 was the season i stopped doing that and started going to the games from the off.I had a mate who lived in Blundell Ave and we would go to his house and use a ladder to climb over the fence and into the Pontoon stand. It was quite high and had barbed wire on the top,so looking back,it was quite dangerous but it didn't stop us.

The last team photo on this post I am on it and got a right bollocking because I had a slightly different shirt on from the rest of the lads, can anyone spot the difference from the other players.

I covered up for one of the appentices who`s job it was to put the stripp out, got the wrong strip in my place. Brilliant photographs

The Barrat stand entrance, in those days you could leave your bike in those house owners front yard for a couple of pence and they would look after while you went to the match.

Thats it.

It was three young lads who had to get all the stripps together, and I will name them because I know they will not mind, Paul Dennison, John Drinkell who was the elder brother of Kevin Drinkall who came later on
The third lad was young Shaun Mawer as I called him, who tragically died a few months ago.

Great times and a really good set of young apprentices where the first team always mingled with the young lads
.
By the way John Drinkell in my opinion was the best from that family football wise, but Kevin was an exceptional goalscorer who was destined to make it to the big time. and he did.

Makes me kind of sad. Those gates, the flagpole, the Barrettt Stand and the open corners too. They gave Blundell Park a lot more charachter than it has today. The horrific metal gate we have there now is awful. That first photo reminds me of Blundell Park when I first started going, although the photo is taken a lot earlier I think. That photo of Trevor Whymark is ace. The photo of Andy Gray must be from the League Cup Quarter Final in 1979, there were about 24,000 in Blundell Park that night including me. Don't worry Gray didn't score the game ended 0 - 0. I went to the replay at Molineux and the second replay at The Baseball Ground in Derby.

So here I am once more in the playground of the broken hearts
One more experience, one more entry in a diary, self-penned
Yet another emotional suicide overdosed on sentiment and pride
Too late to say I love you, too late to re-stage the play
Abandoning the relics in my playground of yesterday

The Barrat stand entrance, in those days you could leave your bike in those house owners front yard for a couple of pence and they would look after while you went to the match.

"E F T" on the Findus seats - what's that all about? Also they should never have knocked down those old 'Grimsby Town Football Club' brick gates. They look ace compared to the godawful metal thing there now.

Great picture that was one of the best Town teams ever.

Not sure this is town in the stripes because the caption on the web site of the photo  quotes
'May 1934: Norwich City Football Club prove themselves to be the footballing pride of Anglia with their Second Division Championship and Hospital Cup wins. Posing with their trophy and league shield, Norwich City (plain shirts) are about to play Grimsby Town (stripes) in the last game of the season at The Nest.'

According to the 'fishy stats' Town won the 2nd (old) Division Championship and we played Bradford City last game of the season . While Norwich won the 3rd (s) (old)  Division Championship. So we didn't even play them that year.

So it could have been a friendly match with both teams  showing their Shields off - anybody shred any light on this ?

thats the town fans on the pitch .
id prefer to see more pics of the ground and the fans than old team photos ,we made the place buzz back in those days not so much the players

what i do when that happens is go in photo shop and make the picture smaller so i can then send it as email, try this,i bet you have the largest size, you can have the picture as small, medium or large,if you switch it to small you should be ok,you will even get away with medium, let us know if this sorts it

Is it my imagination or do we only succeed when we have a midget in the side. (sorry Dave, not meant to insult)

There's Oldfootballer, Joe Waters, and Mike Cullen wasn't the biggest player in the world. Can't be right though who was the smallest in AB's side?

Of course no offence taken, and I am a midget and proud to be as well.

Every good side has got a ball playing clever midfield player the names you have mentioned there Joe Waters, myself, what about Dave Gilbert and also Bobby Cummins who was very much a hard respected player but was only a little bit tiny in height levels.

OLDFOOTBALLER

when the ball is on the ground everybody is the same size its what you do with the ball that matters m/http/thisis.co.uk/274236/signature/gtfc-soldier-aphanfc

Well it's killing me just trying to put it on! I've done what I was told.. I go on Imageshag.. whatever it's fkcing called and choose the right sized box, open my images etc BUT as soon as I click on "Open" it tells me it's too fcking big!? I even chose the Avatar box but it still tells me it's too fcking big! No one's ever told me it was too big before!?!
And I've tried dragging it in but it don't fcking work?!
I'm not such a Luddite that I can't do stuff generally .. I can get on Urface and Mytube and Twa tter and I can cut and paste and do joint up riting..

I hope it's worth it.. it's something out of the telegraph from maybe mid 70's.. when Town where featured on the front page of the Telegraph!
I haven't seen it anywhere else,  for some reason I used to cut things out of the telegraph in them days?! I was young then had more time to far t about ...Maybe I was actually interested in life then?! ha ha!?
Anyway if there's a way..???

Someone asked about E F T being spelt out in the Findus seats?

I'm fairly sure that referred to Europe's Food Town and was a group of food procesing firms that were jointly providing some sponsorship to Town at the time.

This is a pre-1960 photo isn't it? That's the old Pontoon stand on the left which was replaced in 1960.

i blame Furneaux for having those Corners of terrace torn down...

somewhat strange to see what would've been the players tunnel in the Lower Findus, i know i can make it out from the Pontoon Stand because of where the lighter grey stone blocks are different from the rest of it...

It was a cracking ground back in the day...... I can remember it being packed when our lot played there for a top-of-the-table Fourth Division clas in the late 70's and atmosphere was superb. I've always looked forward to visiting Blundell Park

I always enjoyed playing Barnsley regarded it as a proper Derby game going back to 79/80 even if we usually ended up urine wet through on your old kop.

Floodlights arrived in 1958 as I recall. They were on stumpy concrete posts. Didn't we play Dynamo Prague or someone to christen the new lights.

I can't see the Ritz in the foreground so it might be a pre-ww2 photo. Evidently the Ritz wasn't opened until 1937 (before my time though. I always thought it had been there since the year dot).

And you never will, Oldun is right that's the Mainstand, the white boards segregating the sitting and standing areas give it away.

Sorry, it's a pity there just never seems to be a decent picture of the Barrett, very frustrating.

Tell you a story about the Barratt stand Town were having a dreadful season around about 1967 or could have been two seasons before Laurie Mac came to the club.

We were playing against Crewe Alexandra and were losing and the gate was only around 2000
The Barrat stand was practically empty the ball went into the Barrat after being knocked out for a throw in by a Crewe player.
Nobody would throw the ball back so I had to jump in the stand and go to the top where supporters were keeping the ball in protest with the poor way we were playing.

Just has I got to this guy who was holding the ball his mate grabbed the ball and kicked it back onto the pitch.
Never felt so humilated in my young life as I did then. Never will forget  the jeering Town supporters that day, but then again they were really putting up with a load of rubbish every week and did not deserve to be.

I think we had to apply for relection that year and not long after that we started to get gates of fifteen to twenty thousand and it seemed that most were in the Barratt stand.

when the ball is on the ground everybody is the same size its what you do with the ball that matters m/http/thisis.co.uk/274236/signature/gtfc-soldier-aphanfc

Someone has been at work with Photoshop

That's the Pontoon and the Mainstand reversed. There has always been a covered corner between the Osmond and main stand.

Whilst we're in the nostalgia mood the following music brings back memories. It was used by YTV in the late 1970's for their Sunday afternoon football highlights show 'The Big Game'. I remember one featured game against Sheffield Wednesday that was basically Bobby Cummings versus Terry Curran.

Mr McGee, don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

Hello chaps,I was perusing my collection of old Grimsby Telegraphs and came across some photographs rarely seen since the day of publication. This photograph is of Mick Coop scoring the penalty that knocked Town out of the F.A.Cup in Feb 1973.

I'm reluctant to agree with you,I have been suitably chastised by Icenian senior who squinted at the picture and told me I'm wrong.

My first away game.

It was never a penalty, the challenge was a yard outside the box.  I expect I'll get over it eventualy.

Sing When We're Fishing Issue 9.

Highlights are articles on Joe Waters and Keith Alexander. I've changed the format I'm posting slightly, so hopefully they'll be a little easier to read. Let me know if you want me to switch back to the previous format.

I've only just come across this thread....some brilliant pics and memories

Nice to see Bernard on this one....a fantastic Mariners' supporter. RIP

I remember him having a set to with someone away at Cambridge probably in the early nineties....things weren't going our way and he had a dispute about something or other with another of our fans where they came to blows before someone stepped in to end it

Obviously his feelings got the better of him that day but his passion could never be called in to question...

What a fantastic thread, I can not believe I have only just read and seen it all,

I have some really great images of town in the 50's and 60's,

BUT

I can not put them on here,

They are all in my head,

Sorry.

That p[icture of a hirsute Arthur Mann was taken from The Park Drive Book of Football 1968..

i don't see any floodlights in that one, interestingly when when was that brick arch in between the old Barrett's and Pontoon pull down then?

More to the point why? its amazing how the 60's and 70's really copulated architecture up the behind!

Its hard enough remembering my opinions without remembering my reasons for them!

Found one randomly on Facebook, anyone got or found any others?

My dad - Springfield Mariner tells me that he used to go through these gates alot and that it was for the gates to let the huge crowds (at the time) out - they were very special part of Blundell park and must haver been demolished when the barrat Stand was no more and they developed the Findus - about 1980/81 would it be?? I cant remember ??

I dont remember the bulb on the wall on the left.  Everybody seems to wearing jacket and trousers and the floodights are shorter than we have now.  When was this taken? any ideas?, short hairstyles, so probably early to mid 60's, maybe late 50's,  also notice how it is all blokes, no women!  Colour photograph too, when did colour cameras become available?  Only one car in the street, I grew up down that street and I remember more tan that, not many, but more than that.  mmm

Just been looking at the photo of Imperial Avenue.

The light on the left surely  was for illuminating the doorway of the public toilets that stood
nn the nearside of the brick wall you can just see. I'd forgot they ever existed

Should have been listed buildings

In regards to the floodlights I actually bought the ones from the 1950's in around 1973, I believe Town purchased them from Blackpool second hand, there were 96 in total and in size terms they were huge something like 18in or more in diameter with the biggest bulb you ever did see!  They were all stashed away under the old Barrett stand, I had to go and see the then chairman Paddy Hamilton on the Sunday morning following a home match on the Saturday I believe we agreed on the princely sum of £75, in hindsight I wish I had kept one as a momento of the past lol, excellant photo's super memories especially good to see the pics of Bill Shankley etc and the FA Cup Semi-final.

Well it looks a hell of a lot like him, The front row all seem to be young kids and although I know Macca didn't make his debut until 1987 I though he may have been in the youth set up then.

I have looked through the great pictures, some haven't loaded so I'm not sure if this letter from GTFC trying to raise support has been added.

I've been meaning to up load this for some time and I thought it fitting to do it for my 10,000 post.  When ever I see the letter it takes me back to that cold winter evening when I heard someone at the door.  I looked out the window and John Cockerill was hand delivering the letters trying to raise support for the club.  The club was 4th bottom of Division 4 and the fans were voting with their feet and here was one of the players doing what he could to make a difference.  Cockers is my hero, he went the extra mile for the club and as a player he gave everything.  I was gutted when he wasn't given the managers job when AB left and I feel he was poorly treated by the club.

Supporting the Mighty Mariners for over 30 years, home town club is were the heart and soul is and it's great to be a part of it.

Jesus’ disciple Peter, picked up a fish to get the tribute money from it, Jesus left his thumb print on the fish, bless'ed is the Haddock.
